can't motivate myself to do anything - please give me a nudge

I wake up every morning and have zero motivation for anything. There are loads of things I'd like to do or could do but I seem to have an invisible block stopping me from actually doing any of them. I found it hard enough this morning to just have a bath and get dressed. Weirdly, the stuff I most want to do is even harder to get motivated about.

I am managing a walk most days, a bit of cooking, shared with DH and the bare minimum housework. But even the house seems so perpetually grubby from having everyone home all the time, and I don't have energy to clean, only to see it undone within 24 hours.

I feel like I need someone to tell me: do this now. I just can't find the ignition myself.

Anyone feel the same? Or have advice? or fancying telling me what to get started on? Grin I know it seems silly but it is really dragging me down and making me feel deeply self-critical. Slippery slope.

Well done monkey! Did you get the window cleaned? I’m working today so the only extra job I’m planning is to clear out one of the kitchen cupboards. Have a good day all!

monkeyonthetable · 01/06/2020 09:35

No, @ejecoms the window is still dusty and streaked with bird droppings Blush. I will do it as soon as I finish this post! But I did get rid of a horrible crust of limescale around the bathroom tap, and I de-furred behind the kitchen radiator which had enough laundry fluff to fill a small stuffed toy, so I am gradually doing those grimy jobs that get left.

Today I've already done some work (woke up early.) Now going to clean that window, do a laundry load, have a shower and get dressed. Then back to my desk. Walk later and cooking dinner tonight.

What is everyone else up to today?

I’m back at work today - wfh and dc’s homeschooling with dh. Trying to focus on my work but mind keeps wandering to all those jobs that need doing around the house!
Today is my first day of trying the idea of writing down just 3 things to get done - i just find it really hard to decide on which 3...

@monkeyonthetable what did you use to get rid of the limescale crust as I have same problem on bathroom tap?

Figrolls14 · 01/06/2020 10:28

Hello! Anybody out there have inattentive ADD and children? Any tips?

Figrolls14 · 01/06/2020 10:28

Baking powder/bicarb good for taps...

Littlemiss74 · 01/06/2020 11:03

@Figrolls14 hi there - I strongly suspect I have inattentive ADD but have not had any assessments to have it confirmed. I was wondering about my ds having it a year or so ago and so started reading about it only to find it was describing me to a tee! I’m sure that is why I struggle so much with tasks that are pretty straightforward for most people.
Do you inattentive ADD?

ejecoms · 01/06/2020 16:59

Busy day today at work. Pleased to get back a bit more to normal post Covid. I managed to clear out the cupboard as well. I found a nice jug that was shoved into the cupboard and now I’ve put it on display in the room I sorted last week. It’s keeping me motivated to see my progress. Hope everyone else is doing their jobs!

colouringindoors · 01/06/2020 18:08

Can I join please?

Overwhelming levels of lethargy here. Lots to do but..... also horrendous hayfever today has wiped me out.
But I did:
change my sheets
put load washing in
dust my bedroom (didn't help with hayfever!!!)

need to get on with dinner in a mo - groan.

Best wishes to everyone else struggling too.

Terralee · 01/06/2020 21:50

I've had a shower this evening again.

Also changed the bed!! Really pleased.

monkeyonthetable · 02/06/2020 08:28

Morning everyone! Well done on all the achievements.
@colouringindoors - welcome.

I really need to change our bed today. And get DC to strip theirs too. Lovely day for line-drying. Top mission of the day.

Going for a walk with a friend and need to finish some work today too.

thanks monkey I have to go into work today which is probably just as well....

ejecoms · 02/06/2020 12:15

Morning all. Hope you are getting stuff done and feeling more motivated. I’m at work today but currently sitting in the sun having a sandwich. I have 3 kitchen cupboards to sort out today!

Terralee · 02/06/2020 14:27

I managed to have a wash & clean teeth & put make up and sun lotion on.
Then walked to Tesco. Came back and changed. Now my mum is visiting.

colouringindoors · 02/06/2020 17:03

I managed to go to work for 4 hours Hmm now in front of tv

ejecoms · 02/06/2020 18:10

Well done @Terralee. You’ve got loads done!

I’ve just got back from work and I’m exhausted and a bit shakey. So I’m going to give the cupboards a miss for today...

monkeyonthetable · 02/06/2020 22:19

@ejecoms - a day at work outside home is plenty for one day!

I worked from home for a few hours this morning, went for a walk, had a friend over for socially distanced cup of tea, then cooked dinner and watched TV. No cleaning or laundry today and didn't change the bed but it can survive another day.

Yes, you’re right monkey! I think I had had a successful few days of getting lots done and overestimated myself! I’m not at work today but do have a talk to write. I also need to clean the kitchen- I’ve been ignoring it in place of other jobs. Generally feeling a bit down and lacking motivation today.

peoplepleaser1 · 03/06/2020 08:19

Jumping back into the thread.

@colouringindoors welcome, 4 hours work is an achievement. Do you have a list for today?

@Terralee sounds like you've been doing great. I really should change my bed sheets today- I hate doing it for some reason, especially wrestling with the duvet cover.

@ejecoms sounds like work wiped you out. Maybe today is a day to be kind to yourself and to try to do something nice for you. Hope you get your talk written.

@monkeyonthetable wishing you a good day today, sounds like you had a busy day yesterday!

My list for today:
Clear and hoover downstairs
Change my bed sheets
Make photo card fro MIL

I'm supporting DS with his homeschooling too which both of us are finding tough. Parenting teens during lockdown is a huge challenge for me.

Wishing everyone a nice day.

Terralee · 03/06/2020 09:52

@peoplepleaser1 I hate changing my duvet cover as it's kingsize- I usually get help but due to lockdown I'm doing it myself

Today I've got to shower, water my indoor orchids, wash the dishes, iron my jeans as it's cooler weather

colouringindoors · 03/06/2020 10:24

people thanks.

Today I have to hang out a load of washing.
Then I'm supposed to be studying for 6 hours. Signed up to to an online interior design course 6 weeks ago, something ive been thinking of doing for a while, but lost momentum last week...

Good luck everyone

colouringindoors · 03/06/2020 10:24

parenting teens too. It's hard.

Tobythecat · 03/06/2020 11:12

I'm feeling a bit sluggish and down today. I did brush my teeth, wash the dishes and the cats bowls and the recycling bin. Goign to do some studying this evening and maybe put the hoover over and make the bed.

colouringindoors · 03/06/2020 12:11

well done Toby. I still haven't made it into the shower. And have just eaten a pile if crisps and biscuits Hmm not a good start...

Chaotic45 · 03/06/2020 14:31

Argh. I've done nothing other than 2.5 hours work and then hours and hours trying to help my son with his maths.

Feeling deflated as I had high hopes for today but maths problems derailed me totally and I can't get back on track.

monkeyonthetable · 03/06/2020 17:46

We're all feeling sluggish and down today. Change in the weather. I've not accomplished much today. Did some work this morning. Went for a walk and visited a friend in her garden which was lovely. I've now spoken to three real-life people other than DH & DC since lockdown began. Grin

DH cooking tonight, so I will try and force myself to change the bed and have a bath. But I'm so tired. It's like a drug sometimes, how tired I feel.

Hope everyone else is coping OK. If you're not, be kind to yourselves. There's always tomorrow.
