Emetophobia - my worst nightmare

Ds1 goes to a school set on several different sites. Today one of the sites has been closed for deep cleaning due to norovirus wiping out hundreds of children this week. There are loads of siblings in ds1's building/class and 8 of his classmates were off today.

I am a single parent (really outing myself here!) and terrified of what feels completely inevitable right now. I was awake all night last night, waiting. Shall be doing the same again tonight.

You know, I feel like I have improved a lot with my emetophobia recently. I am no longer worried about the odd v. It's the awful, debilitating violence of noro that terrifies the life out of me.

The waiting is utter torture Sad

It is sometimes worse at night but my fear has got worse since ds was sick on Friday every cough worries me :(, I have really bad bloated type tummy tonight hope I haven't caught anything.
I hate it when people put it in face book too, someone once put a picture on :(, and I seem something the other day which has put me off buses for life, I already said I'd never go on a coach again but now buses too :( especially in winter!!

Marne · 22/11/2012 22:20

i cant go on buses sinse some drunk was sick and i had to walk over it to get off the bus Sad.

Boating could just be anxiety or hunger if your not eating enough?

I hate fb this time of year, i dont understand why people put pictures on of their sick kids Hmm.

stef06 · 22/11/2012 22:57

So one drunk was sick infront of me on a 12 hour coach journey :(, wont go on a bus as someone had put on Facebook that someone had projectile v on their head :(. It really bad tummy ache I can hear it churning :( is a bit bloated tho. Do you know anything that can help an achey tummy if the achyness goes I won't be worried

devilinside · 22/11/2012 23:40

DS complaining of tummy ache tonight, and refused his dinner, feeling very anxious.

:( to bus story, that will make me think twice about ever taking the bus again

stef06 · 22/11/2012 23:53

Ino don't think ill ever get a bus ever again, had 4 sips of whiskey seems to be working so far

Marne · 23/11/2012 07:57

Hope ou are all ok this morning and bug free. Was up most of the night with coughing dd2, dd1 is going to school this morning but says she has a bit of a tummy ache. Another day of staying in with dd2 but have to go to the chemest and am petrified of catching something in there (will run in and grab what i want leaving dd2 in the car).

Marne · 23/11/2012 09:03

Well took dd1 to school, was speaking to dd2's ta who said her dd was still being sick and now she feels poorly too, she's planing on taking her daughter to the christmas fair tomorrow Hmm where i'm ment to be helping, i am going to say i'm not going to be able to help as dd2 is still poorly. Then we were about to go in and a child was sick in the playground, am no freaking out and wishing i had kept dd1 at homes Sad, i hate hate hate this phobia Sad.

liveinazoo · 23/11/2012 10:18

oh marne oim soo sorry this happened.if its an consilation id have probaby freaked and grabbed the dcs and ran homeBlush

i cant remember who asked but baby sick didnt bother me either-theres not much and it never smeltWink

when i was a kid people were less selfish, keeping kids off was the norm if theyw ere off colouri am constantly being challenged by school over their attendance due to fevers etc

assume its the both parent works culture no one wants to have them at home/take time off workSad

Marne · 23/11/2012 10:31

I'm still freaking out Shock, poor dd1 is going to hate me as i'm not going to the christmas fair if i ca n help it, no way i want to be in the school with a bug doing the rounds, plus the fact dd2's ta is going to bring her dd who is still sick Angry, i just want to get dd1 home, straight into the bath, her clothes on a hot wash and then lock the doors for the weekend.

I'm trying to think things over in my head 'i didnt see the child be sick, i'm not sure who it was, maybe it was a toddler, not a child actualy at the school?' ahhhhh, i hate this so much.

Still havn't braved the chemest, poor dd2 needs cough medicine but i dont want to go and get it Sad

Marne · 23/11/2012 10:34

I always had a week off school if i was sick (which was rare so when i was sick it was a shock to the system), i hate seeing kids go back too early looking pale and poorly Sad. Dd2 has been off for 3 days with this cough and i shall be keeping her home until she' better, in a way i hope dd1 gets this horrid cold so i can keep her home too (away from the bug), i know thats selfish of me but i hate feeling this anxious Sad

roundabout1 · 23/11/2012 11:10

marne - No wonder you are furious, to go to a christmas fair with a child that was still sick the day before is just irresponsible. It's so annoying as it is obvious if everyone stuck to the 48hr rule things would be so much better for everyone. Whe we had a meeting with dd's headteacher on wed he was complaining about abscences in general & saying that his primary age kids go to school unless they are dying, I was so tempted to ask if he follows the 48hr rule with them but wimped out, thinking about it school do have a policy over returning after sickness anyway - perhaps that is why!

Marne · 23/11/2012 11:28

And the TA knows how poorly dd2 gets when she gets a tummy bug, you would have thought working in a school she would know how fast these things spread if you dont stick to the 48 hour rule. I have e-mailed the oraniser to see if they can find someone else to take my place on the kids craf area as dd2 is poorly, i hope they can find someone so i dont have to go in.

I'm Shock at how so many people dont stick to the 48 hour rule, i dont understand why people cant take a couple days off to look after their sick children. Makes me so angry.

Marne · 23/11/2012 11:47

Have been and stocked up on vicks, ribena, calpol and anti-sickness tablets Grin. Cant wait to get dd1 home and bathed.

MagiMingeWassailsAgain · 23/11/2012 12:39

That's great Marne, you are all set now.

DS was sick once last night but nothing since and very keen to eat today. DD ok so far and has gone to school. Now just waiting to see if I get it TBH but at least DH is off to look after the children if needed.

Fingers washed and crossed now.

Marne · 23/11/2012 12:48

Glad your DS is feeling better and fingers crossed you will be ok Smile.

I am now feeling guilty about not helping at the christmas fair, feel realy silly and have told them i might go in for an hour to help (if i go early i should avoid TA's sick child as they are always late), would love not to go though but i think i have to do it for dd1. Will be having baths as soon as we get home and will try to bot get too close to the germy children. I will be telling dd not to buy any home made cakes either Smile.

Dancergirl · 23/11/2012 12:51

Such a relief to read this thread.

Can I join in, another emet here. I so understand all your posts, it's good to know I'm not alone.

What are these anti-sickness tablets from Boots? What are they called and can you buy them without a prescription?

A bit of background - I've been an emet since childhood, I'm now 40 and haven't actually vomited since age 9 (although had nausea many, many times). Luckily I'm blessed with not too sicky children but I worry constantly with all these bugs going around.

I've read a bit on here about dietary changes you can make to avoid bugs and you should eat more garlic?

So good we can support each other.

Marne · 23/11/2012 13:00

Welcome Dancergirl, sorry that you suffer too, the anti-sickness pills are 'Motilium' (domperidone), have a google Smile, they dont always work though (probably depends on how severe the bug is) and can make the other end worse (but if your like me then thats 100 times easier to deal with). You can get them over the counter for around £5 for a pack of 10.

Wow for not being sick sinse the age of 9 Shock.

My kids are not realy sicky children (not like some who pick up every tummy bug) but i still get exta anxious when these bugs are about.

roundabout1 · 23/11/2012 14:43

Dancer - I am also shocked/impressed/envious at the not being sick since 9! I think my record was 11 years but that was before kids!

Marne - Please dont feel guilty .

I am now furious with dd's school, I previously mentioned there being no 24 or 48 hr rule. We had a meeting with dd's teacher & head wed after school, teacher looked unwell there (& was sitting next to me - eek!) she was off sick yesterday but back in school today. The class were told there was a bad bug going round & to wash there frequently. No wonder they spread so quick if that is the action of the teachers. As it is dd has only 61% attendance and has been suffering for almost a year with a post viral fatigue type illness.

reastie · 23/11/2012 14:53

I am Shock at the lack of 48 hour rules going on, especially zoos schools attitude. I genuinely thought schools HAD to give a 48hour thing as legal policy?? Confused

Another day through work where an awful tummy bug is going around (I work in a school). I'm finding it so stressful. I' haven't slept properly in 2 weeks, feel faint most morning from anxiety and have wobbly shaky legs alot of the time I'm so worked up all the time. Starting citalopram this evening and seeing the GP again on Monday. Has anyone here taken citalopram? Any reassurances re: side effects and n/v?

roundabout1 · 23/11/2012 15:03

reastie - I really feel for you, there can be no getting away from it at the moment for you.
I have spent the last week in anxiety & hyper awareness of every tiny symptom since by friends baby got a bad bug from nursery, we saw her last fri afternoon. I haven't eaten normally in this time & have had only a few hours sleep a night due to kids & the anxiety. I suffer with dizziness & nausea anyway from inner ear damage & anxiety & lack of sleep make my symptoms worse but my dizzy symptoms seem to work as an early warning system for other illnesses. I have been in a viscious circle of worrying, feeling dizzy, worrying some more, feeling worse etc etc & it looks like the cycle with continue for a while yet Sad

reastie · 23/11/2012 15:07

roundabout Sad

I meant to say re: baby sick - I wasn't very good with it. Infact, when DD was frst born I couldn't burp her for several weeks as I was so scared of her posseting. I remember driving her home from the hospital and sitting with her in the back (her in the car seat) and being petrified she would posset Sad . This got better over time as I got more used to it though but i did make myself miserable initially about it.

roundabout1 · 23/11/2012 15:12

I was very lucky that I had non sicky babies. My friend has a very sicky baby & I can cope with it but I don't see her for very long.

Cider Apple Vinegar - I read once that this is good for stomach bugs as kills off in the stomach as it's acidy. In a glass with some water & honey or juice its ok. Its also good for chests & general Phlegmy things - urgh!

Marne · 23/11/2012 16:08

Dd1 was a sicky baby, would be sick after every feed, then when she was a toddler she mastered the art of making herself sick if she didn't get her own way (luckily she grew out of it).

I quized Dd1 when she came out of school, apparently no one in her class was off school today, half of dd2's class are away but thats probably due to dd2 coughing all over them (i know her best friend is off with the cough/cold), the child who was sick this morning was a year 5 so i'm feeling a little bit better about the fair tomorrow as it wasnt a child from the classroom i'm going to be in, me and dd1 are going to go and help for an hour.

stef06 · 23/11/2012 17:52

I've heard that a lot if people take spirits after certain foods that are prone to bacteria as it kills the bugs. Whiskey worked on my servire stomach ache last night

InNeedOfBrandy · 23/11/2012 17:55

My ds dad used to drink whiskey whenever he was ill, it always seemed to work to.
