Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Morning @aberjenagain @Darker I'm with you both - I have my own supply of coffee at the office so all is well 😂

I'm also starting a gym programme tonight: it's a 3 month programme and I'm hoping by the end of it exercise will be as much a part of my life as FDs are! Might have to juggle FD's round though as I am not sure FD and PT will go well on the same day. Trying it today and will report back.

Welcome @BotDranning - feel free to ask any questions, lots of wisdom on here. My tip would be a) plan your first few FDs religiously, it's much easier to go off track if you don't have the right food/drinks in and b) track EVERYTHING on myfitnesspal. Means you will weigh your food, not guestimate and be more likely to be successful.

Kitchen closing on 768 - did my first pt session which was light on exercise and heavy on assessment and think I’ll definitely need to swap at least one FD to a non PT day…

well done on the PT session

Had an awful weekend food and drink wise, too much wine, Indian meal out, lots of birthday cake, not self control whatsoever😏so feeling bleurgh and hoping I can manage a good FD today as we do it all again this coming weekend for my DH's 50th 🙀

I also need to incorporate exercise, given my age and perimenopausal status I want to do strength training, but I don't know where to start really. I don't want to try and do it at home as 1) will probably be doing it all wrong and 2) I know I'll not do it consistently as I'm a lazy arse.... but also don't fancy signing up to a gym full of young slim instructors - hmmmm. Plus with working full and having a teenage DS I am time poor. Something to investigate

@lastditchattempt50 my local municipal gym (if that's the right term - run by the council) has one off sessions with PTs to put together a programme for you to follow on your own. Would that be worth looking into?

I'm cous cous and fishcake for lunch and tea today and second of my training sessions - this week seems to be more induction-y then the hard work starts in earnest next week 😬

on the issue of exercise and fasting I’ve been rubbish at being able to fast and swim on the same day. I’d go and swim 20 lengths and be ravenous afterwards!

Well done @harriethoyle. Kitchen closed on 584 for me with a yummy salad with avocado, feta and apple. I ate exactly the same thing yesterday plus a boiled egg and a cup of miso, so calling 700 on that. Looking forward to some delicious rye sourdough tomorrow morning!

I was super busy yesterday and finished around 600 cals, not bad going.... not sure whether to go for a thurs or fri FD for second of week

FD yesterday and closed on 551 - homemade quiche and salad with a small handful of leftover McDonald's fries which heat up very nicely in the airfryer. Plus a cup of Bovril which I'm quite starting to like as a evening hot drink without caffeine.

Because I’m still trying to lose my Christmas/january holiday weight @lastditchattempt50 🤣🙈 once I’m back to normal baseline I’ll go back to 2-3 depending on weekend overindulgence!

Good decision @harriethoyle . I wish Incoukd swap till tomorrow too because I’m starving, but I’m travelling with a heavy case and in a class all day so I need to eat!
