Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Kitchen closing here on 759 - with yesterday’s 556 that’s almost the perfect 1300 for a b2b! Happy enough with that.

already got my granola and yoghurt planned for breakfast tomorrow and my pasta salad made for lunch 🤣 was supposed to be fasting on Thursday but we might be going out for FIL birthday so I’ll intermittent fast if I can’t do full FDs

I nearly gave in earlier but distracted myself enough to get me through to a mushroom omelette and salad, I'm closing the kitchen on 552....

I'm finding that I'm usually not hungry the morning after FD so will have my vanilla latte (88cals) first thing and try to go through to lunch if I can.

Got 2 very heavy weekends ahead, DS birthday with cake and an Indian meal out followed by DH's 50th the weekend after, so more cake, family gathering and meal out 🤦‍♀️ gah....

I did ok. I had lots of veggies for dinner which meant that I felt full. Was happy to have a good breakfast this morning.

Morning all, I was here a couple of years ago but the weight crept back!

I've been 5 2 fasting a few weeks now but I’m on my first back to back, second day today.

On fast days I usually have a boiled egg with soy sauce at about 2pm and then a salad in the evenings with a little cheese, avocado or fish. Last night I added an apple to my salad, it was amazing and really took it up a notch.

hopefully I can lose it again and keep it off this time!

Hello

Would you mind me joining? I have 2 stone to lose. I have a wedding end of May - does that sound doable? More importantly I have my wedding middle of June. It's a secret, just us and two witnesses. But I want a nice summer frock.
Plan to start on Monday. Any good tips? My first fast day will be Tuesday as in the office.

Ah, never mind @lastditchattempt50 , one of things I like about 5:2 is if a FD goes sideways you just try again another day - see Thursday’s sausage-bap-instead-of-FD incident. Made it through take two on ~575

Oh dear. Weigh-in this morning fully reflecting a week which featured the wrong ratio between exercise and cake. But not despairing… my two fast days were early in the week and I’ve not been exercising as much as usual so I’m just girding myself up for a very strict day today and maybe trying to fit in a third day this week.
