Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

kitchen closed here on 547 - happy with that for my first FD in well over a month! Mini tomorrow, FD Weds and possibly Thursday depending on how I’m feeling. Determined to make a dint in the holiday flab…

morning everyone and well done to the weekend / Monday fasters :)
I had my dad visiting this weekend so it wasn't great, I tried to be mindful while eating out but I will be over.

FD today, just made a coffee and hoping it will pull me through like it did for @aberjenagain

Anyone else having a FD today?

I've inadvertently joined you @lastditchattempt50 and @Darker - I've had such a busy day I've only just eaten my ham sandwich and having planned today as a mini I might as well just push through and have b2b fast days I think! so I have about 500 cals for dinner, having used about 550 of my 1300 yesterday and 250 for lunch today... won't be home til 7ish so I suspect whatever is quickest in that range will win the dinner choice😂

I'm struggling today, I have lots of work to do but I've been WFH in kitchen/diner all day and I'm freezing so going to go slightly over and have some lentil soup, should be under 700 though, if I don't have some soup I think I'll crack and eat way too much 🤦‍♀️

Any tips on fasting when the weather is so cold 🥶 🥶 🥶

I had lentil soup yesterday for tea @lastditchattempt50 it’s a good winter warmer! I find lots of hot drinks fruit tea black coffee key to successful winter fasting along with wearing lots of layers so you don’t get too cold in yourself

kitchen closed here on 610 which means c 1200 for my b2b - very respectable! Already got my porridge pot packed for breakfast at work tomorrow 🤣

1.5kg of holiday gone since Sunday according to the scales this morning and a virtuous rest of the week planned - usual ham sandwich for lunch today and then a spinach and ricotta cannelloni which I am trialling as a b2b FD dinner. Then FD tomorrow to finish the week - see you all then!

As harriet said, lots of hot drinks and layers. I find I do better as long as my feet are warm, so I wear normal socks plus fluffy socks plus Ugg-style slipper boots. And I am also very attached to my heated throw (much cheaper to run than the central heating when I’m the only one in the house).

That said, currently sat here with all of the above and my hands are still like ice blocks 🤷‍♀️

PSA: Lidl spinach and ricotta cannelloni is not as good as the Aldi version and is higher in calories. Very bland and tasteless. So don’t waste FD cals on it!

Hello please may I join? I have just been reading the fast 800 and learning about the Mediterranean diet. There’s no way I can do 800 a day for two weeks so I’m planning to start 800 two days a week and stick to a low carb med diet on non-800 days. Initially trying to fast 12 hours overnight then extend it when I get used to it. Any tips gratefully received! I’ve done it for 6 days so far and lost 6lbs but I know that’s mostly a lot of water. Tomorrow is my second 800 day.

I don't think fasting 12 hours overnight necessarily sound like that big a challenge TBH - sorry! it just having tea by 7pm and then a normal breakfast. My understanding of intermittent fasting is that it needs to be around 18:6 with 18 being your fast hours and 6 being your eating window. 5:2 fasting which is what we do is 500-600 cals a day (1300 over two back to back days) and you can eat when you want but most of us find naturally we drop a meal and use our calorie allowance over two meals rather than three. Have a think about which of those would work best for you if you fancy trying either of them.

Morning. Planning a fast day today as no other day this week is going to work. I have carrot and ginger soup in the fridge and lots of veg.

FD tomorrow as it's an office day, although we have a cousin's birthday party in the evening so I suspect it'll be more of a mini again. Did a FD on Monday but forgot that we had promised the children McDonald's and I have no willpower - ended up on 1100 and have kept to TDEE Tuesday and Wednesday with some leftover exercise calories. I'm not weighing myself yet but I do feel a bit less chubby than I did before Christmas 😂
