5:2 thread 102: Faster than a speeding bullet!

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

well done on the losses 😁good luck to those FD-ing today

aberjenagain · 13/01/2025 18:53

All done pretty well bang on 500. And today was the first FD that I didn’t obsess about what to have for dinner all day, hurrah! 😁

lastditchattempt50 · 14/01/2025 08:14

Good work @aberjenagain

FD for me today and stomach is rumbling already.... Got food planned out and will need will of steel later as DS and DH having a chippy tea before the football 😞

Need to keep myself busy and distracted. It's not even the taste as it's usually disappointing but oh my, the smell of chips doused in vinegar 😮

Good luck to anyone else fasting today

TeaRose29 · 14/01/2025 08:39

NFD today as a lot of physical activity. Another quarter pound off this morning though! Now 10.3 1/2 which is 4 pounds off in 10 days!

CrabPuff · 14/01/2025 08:52

Day 1 of a B2B - soup on the menu and chicken laksa from cook this evening.

not much to add apart from that! Good luck fellow fasters!

SydneyCarton · 14/01/2025 09:45

Did a FD yesterday but had forgotten it was DP's nieces birthday, so pizza and cake were involved for dinner. I did rein it in and didn't go mad, but I think it came out around 1000 calories, so more of a mini. Next FD will be Wednesday.

Good luck @lastditchattempt50 - I found the pizza hard enough to resist but salty vinegary chips would have been my undoing!

lastditchattempt50 · 14/01/2025 19:55

Thanks everyone, I did cave slightly and ended up eating about 5 chips 😬 no idea how many calories that would be, I'd had about 488 by that point? Counting day as about 650? But no idea really

CrabPuff · 14/01/2025 20:02

I’m a bit over my 650 due to having 2 teaspoons of peanut butter. Not ideal. And I have no intention of making tomorrow lower as I’m extremely hungry. But will muddle along anyway.

aberjenagain · 15/01/2025 08:48

Well done to yesterday’s fasters 😊@lastditchattempt50, 5 chips sounds very restrained under the circumstances - what is it about chip shop vinegar that makes it smell and taste sooo good?! 🤤

OohMrDarcy · 15/01/2025 10:18

Morning all

back from my couple of days away with work and straight into a much needed FD after hotel food! Have a beef stew in the slow cooker for dinner which I'm looking forward to - will do some mash to go with it for the kids.

lastditchattempt50 · 15/01/2025 10:50

well done @CrabPuff

thanks @aberjenagain I was impressed I didn't scoff more than that TBH.
First weigh in since starting back and a nice 4lb whoosh off 😁if only every week was a 4lb loss....

hope you have a good FD @OohMrDarcy

TeaRose29 · 15/01/2025 11:15

Well done yesterday’s fasters. FD for me today - probably another mini. Just having my breakfast collagen coffee now. Not sure what I’ll have later, I’ll see how I feel and how hungry I am.

Good luck for today, @CrabPuff and @OohMrDarcy .

lastditchattempt50 · 15/01/2025 11:21

@TeaRose29 what is breakfast collagen coffee?

TeaRose29 · 15/01/2025 11:44

@lastditchattempt50 I add a scoop of collagen powder and 2 teaspoons of double cream to a Nespresso coffee. It’s about 100 calories and keeps me going for hours 😊.

SydneyCarton · 15/01/2025 13:29

FD 2 for me today - yesterday was not too bad but did end with crisps and wine, so definitely over TDEE. I did go for a run though and my Apple Watch shows 2500 calories burned between active and resting energy, so hopefully still a small deficit.

OohMrDarcy · 15/01/2025 19:56

Kitchen closed on 529 today

Happy with that. Well done all!

TeaRose29 · 15/01/2025 20:17

Didn’t fast in the end today - done a couple in the last few days and after playing a lot of tennis yesterday I was just too hungry. I’ve probably eaten to my TDEE so happy with that, and hope I can hang on to my 4 pound loss. Will do a mini tomorrow. Well done @OohMrDarcy !

aberjenagain · 17/01/2025 07:32

Morning! Checking in for FD2. Was at a company event yesterday that involved wine and canapés, so was def well over tdee by the end, but on the flip side I did more than 15,000 steps. So, swings and roundabouts as ever.

OohMrDarcy · 17/01/2025 08:29

Morning all

Checking in for Friday FD... have a vegetable soup made over Christmas out of the freezer and defrosting for dinner

@TeaRose29 that sounds like a sensible choice and part of the beauty of 5:2 in my mind, good call!

@aberjenagain you got food planned for today? Hope the work event was good!

aberjenagain · 17/01/2025 11:29

Yes, event was really lovely @OohMrDarcy - catching up with folk I don’t see often (most work from home pretty much 100%)

Delightful lunch planned of miso soup and a mini peperami 😁 and then a frittata with more of the Christmas cheese that we are still working through (!) and lots of veg

Darker · 18/01/2025 10:09

Did well yesterday after a rather poor attempt earlier in the week. And walked almost 20000 steps.

Strangely not hungry this morning.

harriethoyle · 18/01/2025 11:00

Morning gang, I’m baaaack! Two weeks on the ski slopes immediately after Christmas and new year has proved disastrous to my waist line… dreading getting on the scales tomorrow 😬 I’m fasting Monday Wednesday and Thursday this week to try and get some of the damage off asap 🤣🙈

aberjenagain · 20/01/2025 08:09

Morning all, checking in for first FD of the week. Not really feeling it (I think because I am due on on Weds), but will see how we go.

Hope you had lovely hols @harriethoyle

harriethoyle · 20/01/2025 08:21

Morning @aberjenagain I’m joining you. Scales terrifying this morning 🤣🙈 I swear I heard them ask me to get off because I was hurting them! 🤭 Ham sandwich and lentil soup for today’s meals 💪🏻

Darker · 20/01/2025 08:32

2lbs down this week. Super pleased with that, given that apart from the fast days I haven’t felt like I’m ‘on a diet’ and have eaten lots of very delicious food.

Good luck everyone who is on a FD today.
