Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@berryhand I recommend teapigs lemon and ginger tea bags. Pricey but delicious and if you use a teapot you can more cups of tea per bag so better value.

berryhand · 05/02/2024 12:34

Ooh they sound good @JemimaFuddle. Isn't lemon meant to be good for metabolism too?

Tinydancer123 · 05/02/2024 14:13

Hi all how are you ? On an 18 hour with water after a very bad weekend and due on ! Any suggestions for a yummy low cal tea ? I feel maybe if I avoid the wraps this will help. I hope today is going well for you .x

harriethoyle · 05/02/2024 15:59

How about prawns of some description @Tinydancer123 ? You get LOADS for the calories. Or spiralised courgette and bolognese or chilli made with 5% beef and packed with tomatoes. Will come in at c. 300 cals if you're careful with your portion sizes.

Thank you ! I did burrito flat breads bit of a guess but think about 500 . However got a ready meal for later in week 💕. Do you think I should switch up fasting days ? So normally I do fast Monday, TDEE Tuesday then two b2b but thinking may do the two b2b days first ?

berryhand · 05/02/2024 20:43

Do whatever works best for you @Tinydancer123! I sometimes do a Monday and Thurs, but if doing a b2b on Monday and Tues I do a FD Friday instead. I find it a lot easier when I'm out and about or really busy with work

sweetgingercat · 06/02/2024 00:42

Hi all, kitchen closed on about 300 tonight. It's weird but recently I haven't felt very hungry on a fast day, but on an eating day I've not been restrained at all. I think I need to balance things better probably.

@Tinydancer123 if I'm going out during the week then I'll swap nights if I have to, but to be honest I really like getting my b2b out of the way early, so I'll only do it if I really have to!

@JemimaFuddle those ginger lemon tea pigs sound rather nice. I'd love to find an alternative to earl grey with milk which is my current favourite...

berryhand · 06/02/2024 06:52

That's a good FD @sweetgingercat! Kitchen closed here on about 660.

Feeling a bit dispirited this morning. About 1.5lb heavier than this time last week. I know it's probably period related but still bloody frustrating.

Oh well, second day of b2b and hopefully the extra will be gone by the end of the week.

OohMrDarcy · 06/02/2024 08:07

Morning all
I'm going in for my first full FD in nearly 4 years today
I'm making a sausage casserole for dinner so the kids will have that, I'll have a good portion of the veg and one sausage (no mash) and some soup for lunch I think. May end up as a mini of I'm struggling as it's the first but will load up with the water and see how I go!

harriethoyle · 06/02/2024 08:25

Morning all, back for day 2 b2b. Starving in the middle of the night and already dreaming of tomorrow's breakfast! Tuna thin and baked fish tonight.

Morning all, back for day 2 of b2b…. Good luck all fasters!

@harriethoyle what type of thin do you eat?… I’m pretty stuck in my salad lane but a change sounds interesting!

berryhand · 06/02/2024 11:45

I've had a crumpet with marmite and a cup a soup so far today. Gonna have some grapes later and an Aldi chicken chow mein thing again. Should come in about 650 again.

harriethoyle · 06/02/2024 12:32

The square thins @sweetgingercat , they were initially done by Warburtons but now Aldi, Lidl etc do them - they are 100 calories and good to use in lieu of sandwich bread on a fast day....

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 06/02/2024 12:33

@berryhand is that the frozen chicken chow mein from Aldi? report back if so I've contemplated them a couple of times now but I'm wary of trying something new in case I don't like it and I've wasted the FD cals 😂

OP posts:
berryhand · 06/02/2024 12:41

I think it's called Asia tastes or similar @harriethoyle, it's just with the chilled ready meals. 349 cals. Had it yesterday, it's nice enough. Not exactly exciting but not horrible either!

Tinydancer123 · 06/02/2024 14:47

Hi all, just ending my second B2B . I am going to have to go and get one of these meals as it sounds like you get so much more for the cals. A crumpet sounds lovely also :) All I could find was one at 550. I would like a starter a main and a pud lol. I am a pound up from the weekend..... cocktails! Want to try and shift a little more this week. How are you all getting on ?

harriethoyle · 06/02/2024 15:00

I'm fricking ravenous @Tinydancer123 but trying to push through and stoically resisted the tin of shortbread shoved under my nose at lunchtime... Baked fish and peas tonight, which leaves me enough for an emergency thin if I am still hungry before bed. Well done on completing your b2b!

OP posts:
berryhand · 06/02/2024 15:28

I'm bloody starving as well @harriethoyle @Tinydancer123. Trying to hold out having my chow mein but reckon I'll crack in the next half hour

sweetgingercat · 06/02/2024 16:06

I hate it when people offer you food when. You’re fasting! one of my DC shoved their ice cream in my face at lunch which didn’t help!

Thanks @harriethoyle I’ll take a look at those thins… certainly less calories than a wrap!

Tinydancer123 · 06/02/2024 17:58

Oh tea sounds lovely ! I am ending on 630 ! Ekkkk not as good as I had hoped but I am due on ! Are you on b2b ?
I now need to stay totally away from the kitchen !!!

Tinydancer123 · 06/02/2024 17:59

Ps Shortbread..... yummy ! Well resisted !

Tinydancer123 · 06/02/2024 18:15

Pps I do not know how to tag you sorry !! Harriet and Berryhand !

OohMrDarcy · 06/02/2024 18:27

Ending FD1 On almost exactly 500 cals, and all eating also within a 16:8 window which I'm pleased with

Fingers crossed this is the start of me being back on it!

berryhand · 06/02/2024 20:26

Good work @OohMrDarcy and @Tinydancer123! I am bloody starving so going to have a very early night. Dreaming of my toast in the morning, haha. It's blowing a gale here tonight!

OohMrDarcy · 06/02/2024 20:32

Thanks @berryhand

Do you find you want the toast in the morning? I know when I last regularly fasted, I was looking forward to all sorts of things but the next day I wasn't hungry
