Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

43 hours is long @oOmoonhaOo, don't think I could do that without it having some impact on day to day functioning!

I'm fasting today (not feasting as I put last night - clearly wishful thinking!) Aiming for 500. Period is due in the next few days so feeling a bit bloated and ragey. Great fasting conditions 😖

harriethoyle · 02/02/2024 08:19

I'm ending the week half a pound down on this time last Friday so I'll take that I suppose, although it's felt like a very frustrating plateau! Hopefully I'll have a whoosh soon, 3 FD next week Mon, Tues, Thurs.

Only a pound off.... I wanted more ...... but hey ho. Going to a lower TDDE today. Any tips to shift it seems so slow ?

harriethoyle · 02/02/2024 10:39

I can't remember who it was but earlier this week when I was moaning about slow WL @Tinydancer123 someone recommended physical activity and drinking water. I've failed miserably at both this week but am going to try them this weekend and next week!

Thank you - I agree I have a cold and I think the exercise has impacted :( I normally walk and do 4 x exercise.... I am going to try to catch up. How are you getting on ? Water is so hard for me I am rubbish!

harriethoyle · 02/02/2024 10:54

@Tinydancer123 rubbishly but am WFH today so am going to keep a pint of water next to me, same tomorrow pre going to friends in the evening and am out with dogs both days. It's just fitting it in to working days that I struggle with!

You've just reminded me I've not had any water today, only tea. Aiming to last out as long as possible this afternoon before some soup and my usual M&S meal. God I'm so predictable.

I am the same with my wraps ! What meals do you have ? I am going to try and up the water although on a NFD and keep it fairly low as we have cocktails tomoz ..... ekkkkk

berryhand · 02/02/2024 13:09

I usually have the count on us chicken risotto or Thai curry @Tinydancer123. Maybe we all need to share our FD meal plans for inspiration, haha

harriethoyle · 02/02/2024 14:11

I'm exactly the same @berryhand I usually have the Aldi spinach cannaloni or breaded fish with broccoli. I find it helps not to have to think about food too much on a FD!

I'm on my second pint of water - thanks for the reminder @Tinydancer123 !

These are great ideas thank you. I am afraid I am super boring and have a weight watchers wrap with tun egg , fruit and yoghurt. I think perhaps I should try to switch it up. I will look at these meals. I really would like a big loss next week so going to try very hard to go steeady this weekend. Will up water and try and beat the cold on my bike. Any nice plans for the weekend ladies ?

harriethoyle · 02/02/2024 14:25

It's the start of the Six Nations so that means I will read my book with the dogs in one lounge, @Tinydancer123 and my husband will be shouting at the telly in the other! 😂Staying with friends tomorrow night which will be fun but boozy...

berryhand · 02/02/2024 17:50

I do like a wrap @Tinydancer123. No huge plans this weekend, babysitting for some pals tomorrow which will definitely cut my wine intake for the weekend!

berryhand · 02/02/2024 20:45

Kitchen closing on 541. Have been absolutely fine today until now when I am suddenly ravenous. Had to have some dried apricots which bumped me over 500.

Have great weekends all! Will be back here for a FD Monday. Possibly b2b Monday and Tues - let's see how much damage the weekend inflicts 😬

Tinydancer123 · 02/02/2024 20:58

Well done fasters . My hubby is also watching rugby. I may have had three passionfruit martinis testing my skills for cocktails here tomoz..... chocolate , pizza and cake. Possibly well not possibly def over cals :( i think I need to be very , very good tomorrow pre cocktails 😁😓

harriethoyle · 04/02/2024 16:38

OK. Own up. Who put the weekend on fast forward?!

Checking in for b2b tomorrow and Tuesday. See you all here 😊

berryhand · 04/02/2024 16:43

I know @harriethoyle it has flown by! I'm b2bing with you tomorrow and Tues. The less said about my eating habits this weekend the better...

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 05/02/2024 06:49

Morning! I’m checking in early for Monday fast. Planning a plate of leftover Sunday dinner things for lunch: protein, and three quarters of a plate of vegetables 🤣

I’ve got a late meeting today so I’m going to experiment with having my food at lunchtime and there are enough calories left for an apple at tea time if I’m starving.

texy · 05/02/2024 08:11

Morning all, room for a (not so) little one? I am also a lapsed veteran and have been 5:2ing on and off since 2013 when I lost 2 stone. Then I put the weight back on. Then I did fast800 and lost 2 stone, then I put the weight back on....see what I did there?! It has to stop.

So, back on the fasting train again now and aiming for 5:2 (one meal a day) with a bit of 16:8 style thrown in on the other days too as if I eat breakfast I am an eating machine all day.

Pleasant win of last week was being able to do my heavy strength training class completely fasted (I save my cals for dinner) and it being completely fine. Actually, better than fine - I felt bloody great. So that will help me fit things in which is good. Nice to read about all your progress 😊

harriethoyle · 05/02/2024 09:04

Welcome back @texy! You know this WOL works, so you just have to resume it

My aims this week, as well as 3 x FD, is to drink more water and move more. Got the stairs this morning, rather than the lift, when I got to work and will try and get out for a walk after work depending on what time I get home and how miserable the weather is!

OP posts:
JemimaFuddle · 05/02/2024 10:55

I was meant to be fasting today but I feel like I am coming down with a cold and my period is due tomorrow so I might need to postpone this one. I will see how I go.

sweetgingercat · 05/02/2024 11:15

Morning ladies, checking in for the first of a B2B and I’m hopeless at drinking water so I’m going to try upping my water game too! Good luck today fasters…

SydneyCarton · 05/02/2024 11:33

I have found it very hard to get going with 5:2 after holidays and Christmas - I am OK fasting until I get home from work, and then just collapse and find myself eating All The Things. This week I'm going to try 16:8 each day and see if that helps - finished eating at 6.45 pm last night so now technically in my eating window, but going to push through till 12 as dinner tonight will be later. I think 12-8 is more realistic for me.

JemimaFuddle · 05/02/2024 11:53

As predicted, fasting the day before a period isn't going to happen! I will postpone this one til Wednesday or Thursday.

berryhand · 05/02/2024 11:54

Checking in for day 1 of a b2b. I am with you on the trying to drink more water @harriethoyle and @sweetgingercat I started well in January but have reverted to usual hopeless performance.

Planning veg sushi snack pack for lunch followed by a chicken chow mein thing for tea. Plus bought myself some fancy new peach teabags so hoping that will help with my water intake.

Started period at the weekend so yesterday included a McDonalds and me eating nutella direct from the jar 😬

Definitely need a b2b! Good luck fellow fasters
