Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Not straight away @OohMrDarcy usually but I tend to do the school run then come back and have breakfast in peace afterwards 😬

OohMrDarcy · 06/02/2024 20:38

Enjoy 😀

Tinydancer123 · 06/02/2024 21:09

I always want toast after b2b . I am having eggs on toast 💕Well done all ! Drinking water . Despite it being a nfd tomoz going to try and do low cals x

harriethoyle · 06/02/2024 21:22

Kitchen closing at 720, making 1412 for the b2b. 100 too high but I'll take it.

Well done all!

ilovebagpuss · 07/02/2024 08:58

Morning 2lb down from when I started back into routine. Slow start over 3 weeks with 45 mins walking each night.
Fasted Monday and will do Thursday. I made a big batch of veg curry on Sunday for fast days which helps to have a hot lunch ready to go.
Go to teatime is usually mushrooms on sourdough or a poached egg.
I love a crumpet as well, low cal and doesn't feel like a fasting snack with a bit of marmite!

harriethoyle · 07/02/2024 09:00

Well done @ilovebagpuss. Had toast and marmite this morning, like the nectar of the gods after a b2b 🤣

I am fasting today after my Monday failure

Tinydancer123 · 07/02/2024 12:00

Hi all,

Well back to pre cocktail weight ! A normal low cal TDDE day aiming for 1000 but did scoff Lindt chocs ( fail ) Back to a fast tomoz. How are you all doing ?

berryhand · 07/02/2024 12:10

I had toast and marmite too @harriethoyle! Absolute dream.

Back to pre period weight this morning and another lb off so that was nice.

Good luck today's fasters!

Your TDEE must be higher than 1000 anyway unless you are absolutely tiny so the Lindt probably wasn't a disaster.

My TTDE IS 1246.... I am only 5ft 3 but sadly 2 stone over weight :(

sweetgingercat · 07/02/2024 13:56

All good here. Had a tiny wobble last night with two little chocolate waifters, they were about 2cm square but still 60 cals each! and about 8 air fried french fries, but given my previous 300 cal fast day I'm not going to complain. Hurray, well done everyone, B2b over!

Marmite and toast for me this morning as well! Back on tomorrow for a third fast day. See you then.

harriethoyle · 07/02/2024 15:09

@Tinydancer123 @sweetgingercat I will see you both here. I'm also going for FD3

JemimaFuddle · 07/02/2024 18:05

I am reluctantly doing a b2b to make up for Monday's failure so I will be fasting with you tomorrow @harriethoyle

berryhand · 07/02/2024 20:44

Can't decide whether to do FD3 tomorrow or Friday. In the office tomorrow but school inset day Friday so will be busy both days.

Tinydancer123 · 07/02/2024 21:14

Join us tomorrow? I am going to try and stick to a 500 day .

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 08/02/2024 07:29

Signing in very reluctantly for a sub 500 today… <groans>

OohMrDarcy · 08/02/2024 09:03

Morning all

Another one signing in for FD2 here - Not convinced it will go well as dinner for the kids is a yummy one - but even a mini is better than not fasting so currently plotting how I will work it and crossing my fingers whilst downing some water

harriethoyle · 08/02/2024 09:08

Morning all. Signing in!

JemimaFuddle · 08/02/2024 09:41

Signing in for a B2B. I woke up feeling really full today weirdly but I am sure that will change!

Tinydancer123 · 08/02/2024 10:08

Hi all signing in .... struggling but need to hit under 500 cals ! Hot me with the most food I can hit for 500. Doing 18.6..... may end on 16.8 does it make much difference ?

sweetgingercat · 08/02/2024 10:38

Hi all, feeling a bit under the weather this morning, but still signing as next week is half term with lots of things planned that will involve eating!

@Tinydancer123 my go tos on a fast day are an apple, and salad… lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber with a teaspoon of red pepper pesto (very tasty and low cal), with fish… smoked salmon, tuna, prawns and an egg. You can get sub 250 with any combination of these and have it twice.

also clearspring miso soup can come in at 38 cals

and I like those sugar free butterscotch sweets from M&S or Waitrose, 8 cals a sweet.

i avoid carbs mostly as they just make me hungry!

good luck! You can do it!

Tinydancer123 · 08/02/2024 10:43

Sounds lovely thank you . I make get some of those sweets ! Are the sweets the same as worthers ? How long do you fast ?

sweetgingercat · 08/02/2024 11:48

@Tinydancer123 Yes they are. I have only just returned to fasting after a long break but I find a b2b on Monday and Tuesday with an extra day on Thursday works out okay.
