Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

morning all

Is there room for a new joiner ? (well a returner but not been here since 2020!)

I was at my lowest and healthiest just prior to covid but the lockdowns messed with my brain, and fulltime home working . home schooling, kids mental health etc broke me. Things at home eventually settled and last summer I started to introduce some 16:8 to gently get things going again... I lost nearly few kgs doing that but then tailed off..... I think now is the time to try proper 5 2 again. probably won't fast this week as still recovering from a d&v bug but looking at either the weekend or early next week for my first FD in almost 4 years!

Welcome , sorry to hear you have struggled. I did fasting too but this def works better. Lots of lovely advice and help on here.

harriethoyle · 31/01/2024 12:28

@OohMrDarcy if you would like some unsolicited advice I find weekend FD WAY harder than week days. So I would defer to early next week rather than try and fail and get dispirited!

OohMrDarcy · 31/01/2024 12:31

Always up for advice Harriet - thats why I used to find these threads so useful!

I tend to work around when the DC are out and about / at their dads as find it easier to FD when they aren't about so sometimes that includes a weekend, you're right though and probably not ideal for first one!

Is anyone on these threads from back in 2020 / previously? I feel like I recognise some names maybe but unsure

harriethoyle · 31/01/2024 13:26

Do you know I have no idea how long I've been here @OohMrDarcy . I might have been here in 2020?! I've definitely been fasting for far longer than that...

I’m fasting today too. My period arrived last week (remember the cake and wine fast day fail?! That was why!!) so I only did that one Monday fast. I’m not going to beat myself up or overcompensate, just back on the Mon/Thurs plan this week.

I’m about 3lbs down from when I started a few weeks ago, and am pleased 😊

I’m currently reading fast like a girl and it’s recommended not to fast in the 10 days running up to your period.

sweetgingercat · 30/01/2024 13:14

@harriethoyle I love them now they have lots of different flavours. And I was surprised at how low cal they are. Having half yesterday was entirely do-able.

On another note I see Rishi Sunak does a water/coffee/tea fast from 7pm Sunday evening until 7am Tuesday morning. Half of me is impressed and the other half of me things he's already super tiny, what's the point? And a naughty part of me things, not surprising he's so tetchy, he's obviously starving!

Right, then, political bitch over, onwards and upwards!

There’s many benefits besides weight loss

oOmoonhaOo · 31/01/2024 19:06

Hi, I’ve been a stalker for a while. But have just began a 3 day fast. I really struggled last time, so hoping that I’d I posted on here I would do better!

berryhand · 01/02/2024 08:12

Morning all. TDEE for me today and FD tomorrow. Got hardly any sleep last night so glad it's that way round!

Good luck to today's fasters!

harriethoyle · 01/02/2024 10:38

Morning all, anyone with me on a FD today? REALLY busy until 4ish then collapsing in a heap somewhere so will have to make sure I don't derail myself tonight...

Afternoon all, I'm on a fast day today. So far so good... See you all this evening!

Welcome @oOmoonhaOo good luck with your three day fast. Is that a total water fast, or a 500/650/800 cal fast?

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 01/02/2024 15:24

I’m fasting today too - so far so good! Will check in tonight, but I’m on zero cals so far, with a nice soup and possibly some yogurt to have later.

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 01/02/2024 15:32

@oOmoonhaOo I read the book after the author (who was introduced as a doctor) was on Dr Rangan Chattergee’s podcast.

She was so emphatic about how long you had to fast for different benefits eg a particular length fast for autophagy and thought it was a bit weird as no one can be certain when it starts and it’s probably different for everyone.

The real alarm bells started ringing when she talked in the book about herbs and supplements to “stimulate” the liver to “detox”

She’s an osteopath. Or a chiropractor. Whatever she is, she is not a medical doctor and so I take what she says with a pinch of salt.

Other doctors and scientists have studied fasting and not yet found (I believe? Please correct me if I’m wrong?) an adverse effect for women and their hormones. I’m thinking eg Michelle Harvie, Krista Varaday.

Are you having some medical support for your 3 day fast?

Not counting calories. But not omitting milk from my tea/coffee.

I might try a shorter fast after this one without milk. But at the moment I just can’t bring myself to do it 😅

Thanks got the info. I’m following her method loosely as what she says about hormone feeding makes alot of sense. Also foods to help with breaking a fast.

I’ll have a look in to the validity of her herb theory.

What medical help should I be getting on a 3 day fast?

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 01/02/2024 16:31

Hi @oOmoonhaOo fasting can lower your blood pressure and blood glucose, and can have a dramatic effect on both. It can be a positive thing, but if your body goes through changes like that dramatically, you can feel really poorly.

Again, I might not have the most up to date evidence, but one day/24 hour 0-500 calorie fasts are well studied and felt to be safe. Anything longer needs to be under medical supervision.

oOmoonhaOo · 01/02/2024 16:53

Thank you. I’ve read a bit about it, but will read some more

Echobelly · 01/02/2024 17:02

Well, I weighed myself the other day, not being very confident I'd made much of a dent since before Christmas (especially considering I skipped Christmas week) but to my surprise I'm almost at my goal weight, just over 9 stone after starting at 9 stone 9 in September.

I've made a slight adjustment to my eating pattern by having a later 'breakfast' of a boiled egg rather than an earlier one of a small bit of yoghurt and fruit, which was just very unsatisfying and used up quite a lot of cals. That way, rather than just having an apple as 'lunch' I could eat that a bit earlier and have ricecake with two thin turkey slices at lunchtime, which feels a bit more substantial. I like to feel I've eaten often, so also added in just a stick of celery mid morning and a bit of cucumber later afternoon and it all feels easier.

harriethoyle · 01/02/2024 17:31

Fabulous @Echobelly well done!!

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 01/02/2024 18:59

That’s inspiring @Echobelly well done!

My Thursday fast has finished happily on 333! I’ve taken the dog for a walk, brushed my teeth and kitchen is closed.

How has everyone else’s day gone?

oOmoonhaOo · 01/02/2024 19:54

What does the 333 mean?

berryhand · 01/02/2024 20:01

Amazing @Echobelly!

@oOmoonhaOo 333 is calorie total for the day. Good work @MikeHannigansStripyShirt. I'm feasting tomorrow.

Tinydancer123 · 01/02/2024 20:36

Hi all how are you all ? Ending on day two of b2b with 500. I am hopeful for a loss in the morning . Remained the same since last week .

sweetgingercat · 01/02/2024 20:54

Hi all, I’m up late tonight to finish some work so I’m saving my calories until later. I’ve eaten a pear so far. (I do feel a bit hungry 🤤).

Well done Echobelly, that’s a good result! And well done everyone who fasted today too…

harriethoyle · 01/02/2024 21:05

I'm on 630 but bloody starving. I swear I have a tapeworm!

OP posts:
oOmoonhaOo · 02/02/2024 06:33

I’ve ended my fast after 43hrs. It’s the longest I’ve gone and tbh I think it was too long.

I’ve woken up this morning feeling really rubbish, dizzy and sick.

Just having a stock drink and few slices of cucumber.

I think 36hrs is best for me.
