Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

morning all,

well done to all those who finished last week strong, glad you're feeling better @berryhand

checking in for a monday FD here.

Weighing in this morning at 110.1kg (so close!) meaning a loss of 0.9kg this week and a total of 4.7kg or 10.3lb 😀

Waspie · 11/03/2024 10:15

Evening all

Kitchen closed on a successful 536. Considering a b2b tomorrow but will as usual see how I am in the morning!

Borris · 11/03/2024 19:39

Well done fasters. So close @OohMrDarcy

I've done d1 of a B2b today. Had a Chinese takeaway yesterday so some damage to undo.

I plucked up the courage to weigh myself -78kg. 3 more than I thought. Will weigh again on Wednesday after my b2b and hope I'll see some improvement

berryhand · 11/03/2024 19:48

Good work fellow fasters. Kitchen closing here on 488 and non-FD tomorrow. Excited for my toast as ever.

harriethoyle · 12/03/2024 08:31

Morning all. I'm nfd today - trying a new strategy where I take a nfd earlier in the week because I've noticed when I do b2b from Monday, all bets are off on Wednesday in terms of any eating restraint!

So trying for a relatively virtuous Tuesday before b2b tomorrow and Thursday 🤞

OohMrDarcy · 12/03/2024 08:37

Sounds like a good plan @harriethoyle

I'm going in for the b2b - for me having my weigh in on a monday helps me.

SydneyCarton · 12/03/2024 11:45

Poking my head round the door to say hi from 16:8 world, which I have been doing for the last few weeks. Was struggling a bit with 5:2 and constantly falling off the wagon, so decided to go for less restriction across more days. Pleased to report that the post-Christmas podge has definitely gone and I feel noticeably trimmer. Weighed in at 10st 7 last Monday but that was my first weigh in for ages so not sure how much I have actually lost - hazarding a guess at 3 lb in 5 weeks, or thereabouts.

Finding it quite easy, although I do miss buttered toast in the mornings. I'm not currently calorie-counting, and I give myself Sundays off. Planning on carrying on for the rest of this month and seeing where I am at that point - if I'm not losing then I will look at eating to TDEE Monday to Saturday.

OohMrDarcy · 12/03/2024 13:40

welcome @SydneyCarton - sounds like 16:8 is working well for you ,congrats!

Waspie · 12/03/2024 13:59

Afternoon. Kitchen closed yesterday on 513 (okay) and I did 90 minutes of yoga last night too. NFD for me today. I did weigh myself for the first time since starting 5:2 two weeks ago and am 2.2Kg down. This is phenomenal but I suspect it's mainly water and not real weight. I'm going to try not to weigh myself for another two weeks and that should be a better guide.

Welcome @SydneyCarton Well done, sounds like it's working for you so far. I'm trying to do 16:8 on my non fast days although I'm finding that very hard the day following a fast day (like today!)

I also find I wake up with a nagging headache the day after a fast day. Presumably it's dehydration, but I am drinking lots of water.

Edit to correct typo

SydneyCarton · 12/03/2024 14:49

Thanks @Waspie and @OohMrDarcy - I have posted on these threads before but took a break for a bit as I wasn't strictly doing 5:2. There are a few 16:8 threads but nothing as well established as this set!

2.2KG in 2 weeks is brilliant, I'd take that even if it is water weight! Definitely sensible to reassess in a couple of weeks

OohMrDarcy · 12/03/2024 19:56

Kitchen closed on 640 which I'm happy with for a b2b and a 45 mins dog walk

NFD tomorrow

sweetgingercat · 12/03/2024 21:18

Kitchen closed on 650 today and 538 yesterday so feeling happy and off to bed shortly. I’m going to have to restrain myself a bit tomorrow as it can be a bit feast and famine at times. Well done other fasters and @SydneyCarton good luck @harriethoyle and fasters tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 13/03/2024 06:56

Nice to see you @SydneyCarton 🙂 I'm a fan of 16:8 when I can't 5:2.

Signing in for day one of a b2b! Is anyone with me?

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 13/03/2024 19:40

Kitchen closing here on c 600 - 539 actual tracked calories and one birthday chocolate 😆

Back tomorrow for day 2 with c.700 to play with, thank goodness. Couscous, veg and hummus for lunch and canneloni for tea I think.

sweetgingercat · 14/03/2024 12:49

Morning all, signing in for my third fast day this week. @harriethoyle and any other fasters, are you out there? Good luck everyone!

harriethoyle · 14/03/2024 12:53

I'm with you @sweetgingercat! Feeling hungry but about to lunch so all good here...

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 14/03/2024 17:44

Well done... Nearly over @harriethoyle I've had an apple today and a couple of cups of tea and I'm also feeling good!

Did you find fasting this way meant better snacking on eating days this week?

harriethoyle · 14/03/2024 19:10

Yes @sweetgingercat I was definitely more virtuous on Tuesday's NFD. I'm going to do the same next week and see if it keeps me on the straight and narrow 😆

Kitchen closing tonight on 686 which makes 1225 for the b2b. Too busy to get to the supermarket today though so a very boring breakfast awaits... I'll make up for it with Friday wine instead!

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 15/03/2024 02:02

Well done on both accounts then. I’m meeting some mums for breakfast so might have a nice croissant!

Kitchen closed on 460 tonight. Good luck Friday fasters!

Waspie · 16/03/2024 12:06

Hello all. Sorry for going AWOL; I had a busy week at work. Well done to the triple fasters! You are hardcore Smile

I fasted on Thursday and actually didn't get a chance to eat at all until 4pm, so I just had my meal (chicken and stir fried veges) at that point. I then went out to a meeting until 9pm so when I got home I just had a glass of water and went to bed - I was shattered.

I didn't do brilliantly yesterday. DS and I had a movie & pizza night so I had two glass of Merlot and half a medium Dominos pizza. I dare not even think about how many calories that was!

If anyone is fasting this weekend, good luck! Otherwise I shall be joining everyone for fasting on Monday. Have a great weekend.
