Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Mind if I join?
I've been contemplating 5:2 for a while and decided to bite the bullet this week, with FDs planned for Tuesday and Thursday. (I'm starting with 800 calories before I try going as low as 500 though)

harriethoyle · 17/03/2024 15:56

Welcome @AuntMarch . We're a friendly bunch so shout with any questions 😊

I'm joining you on Tuesday and then b2b to Wednesday then a mini on Thursday. Sign in and say hi on FDs!

Evening all, sorry I've been AWOL. Been off the boil since having flu, my sinuses are sooooo bad still. Only managed one FD this week.

Tomorrow I'm back on it with a b2b then a mini at the very least on Thurs as I'm away for the weekend on Friday. Hope everyone is doing well, and welcome @AuntMarch! As @harriethoyle says we are a friendly bunch. Anyone with me tomorrow?

AuntMarch · 17/03/2024 21:22

Thanks for the welcome :)
Please do share your FD menus with me - I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to go about it yet!

I usually eat with my son about 5pm which means I'm hungry again before bed time - I'm thinking the way forward might be to fill up the night before and just go as long as possible without eating on the FD?

OohMrDarcy · 18/03/2024 08:12

Good morning all

hope you had a good weekend, welcome @AuntMarch :)

Well I'm annoyed to say I have a gain this week of 0.2kg which I know is nothing - but I also know I was a kg down after my FDs so need to look at NFD a bit more again. I know I had a dominos Friday evening (after a shocker of a day) but I should have been definitely under TDEE the rest of the weekend. Ho hum - we move on!
FD today - soup planned for dinner tonight. No b2b this week, but having another FD on wednesay

harriethoyle · 18/03/2024 08:22

Morning @berryhand hope you feel better soon. I'm sort of joining you and @OohMrDarcy - fasting until supper which is crab linguine. Didn't get around to it over the weekend as planned so having it tonight instead. Then I'm going to b2b Tues and Weds I think, and mini on Thursday. We'll see how it works in practice!

Morning all and welcome @AuntMarch . Fasting today and tomorrow and another one on Thursday.

@AuntMarch My fast meals mainly consist of salad with fish or a small amount of goats cheese and are light on carbs. That way I don’t get to feel hungry much.

Good luck to everyone fasting…

Waspie · 18/03/2024 12:14

Welcome @AuntMarch . I'm a recent joiner too Smile

Hope everyone had good weekends.

I'm joining for fast day 1. Menu (such as it is) is black coffee for breakfast, cup of chicken noodle soup for lunch and tuna with stir fried veges for dinner.

berryhand · 18/03/2024 14:25

My FD lunch has been a big bowl of tomato soup and I usually have an M&S count on us ready meal for dinner. And I go to bed very early (although with a five year old and a two year old I am very ready for sleep)

AuntMarch · 18/03/2024 16:10

Thanks all :)

I probably could have done my first FD today as wasn't at all hungry until lunch time, but we have dinner at my mums tonight so I don't get to control it- didn't want to put the effort in for it just to be undone there!

OohMrDarcy · 18/03/2024 19:37

Kitchen closed on 640 here happy with that.

NFD tomorrow

How did everyone else do?

berryhand · 18/03/2024 19:38

Kitchen closing on 614 here which I'm pretty happy with. Day two of b2b tomorrow and then either a mini or normal FD Thursday depending on how I feel.

Then I'll probably undo it all over the weekend 😁

When will you do your first FD @AuntMarch?

Borris · 18/03/2024 20:49

Well done fasters. I've done day 1 of a b2b today. Will weigh myself on weds morning but will be very surprised if I've lost as the weekend was not very disciplined thanks to baking lots of yummy stuff with dd and then eating it!

harriethoyle · 19/03/2024 07:56

Morning all - @Borris @berryhand I'm with you today on first day of a b2b. Bizarrely feeling less hungry this morning than I did on yesterday's mini 😆

OP posts:
Waspie · 19/03/2024 07:56

NFD for me today too. A good day yesterday - kitchen closed on 475.

Good luck today @Borris , and other Tuesday fasters.

Has anyone tried apple cider vinegar? I've read a few articles citing studies which suggest that it can aid weight loss in the same way that Ozempic can. I bought a bottle at the weekend so I'm going to try some today.

berryhand · 19/03/2024 08:07

Ooh no I've not seen that @Waspie, where was it? Worth a try I reckon!

On b2b day two today, not feeling too bad but slightly headachey. More soup and M&S ready meal fun for me. I'm so predicatable. Good luck @harriethoyle and other fellow fasters!

sweetgingercat · 19/03/2024 08:41

Kitchen closed on 505 for me last night… a good fast day. I always find the first fast day of the week harder, by the second day I’m not really hungry.

I’ve also been reading about apple cider vinegar waspie, and I have some so
I might try it too!

Good luck everyone fasting today.

Waspie · 19/03/2024 13:51

This is the most recent article I've seen Should you start your day with apple cider vinegar? (thetimes.co.uk) I'm not sure if that has a sharing token, Basically it creates a metabolic reaction which helps improve ones metabolism and insulin sensitivity. 15ml in a glass of water daily gave the result of a 7Kg weight loss over 3 months with no other lifestyle changes.

I had some this morning. So did DP. He has already said he's never taking it again and still looks a bit queasy Grin I didn't think it was that bad but despite having the stomach of a concrete elephant I can still feel it swirling around (TMI!) I don't think I'll be taking it on fast days!

Should you start your day with apple cider vinegar?

A new study suggests it could aid weight loss, but it is also said to boost immunity and gut health. Maria Lally reports

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/should-you-start-your-day-with-apple-cider-vinegar-d52ghgvll

harriethoyle · 19/03/2024 16:57

I think I could probably do it as a quick shot but I don't like the idea of drinking a long drink of it if that makes sense?

I do like the idea of 7kg effortless weight loss though!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 19/03/2024 18:17

Kitchen closing on 611 today.

Wfh tomorrow which will make b2b tough but needs must... 🙈

OP posts:
berryhand · 19/03/2024 20:16

I didn't really consider the vileness of the cider vinegar, haha. But 7kg weight loss would be v welcome 😬

Kitchen closing on 694 here today as I fell into a slice of birthday cake. Making 1307 for b2b so pretty happy with that. Will attempt another FD Thurs and look forward to my toast tomorrow morning.

Well done fellow fasters! Hope everyone has had a good day.

AuntMarch · 19/03/2024 21:06

Bah. Just managed to lose my reply.

But today was FD, finishing on 689. Had/have set myself 800 targets for now so very pleased with that.

Borris · 19/03/2024 22:04

Well done fellow fasters. Sound like lots of success all round.
I find after 2 days of b2b that I'm less hungry on the next day so will try to stick to 800-1000 ish. Thursday is when the wheels come off as I tend to go to a cafe for lunch with a hobby group and they have delicious cakes!

OohMrDarcy · 20/03/2024 07:55

Morning all

FD2 of the week for me today. Making a chilli for dinner so I'll have the mince without the rice / cheese on top I think

Anyone else fasting today?

sweetgingercat · 20/03/2024 08:21

Morning all, kitchen closed on 840 last night so I’m happy about my B2B. I’m back on Thursday for another fast day.

I’ve bought some cauliflower to experiment with cauliflower rice. Does anyone eat it?

Good luck fasters today!
