Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I want a twix now @sweetgingercat 😂

@Tinydancer123 I have done b2b then one NFD then another b2b BUT a) not regularly b) I find on a b2b I struggle to get to sleep and so I was fricking exhausted by the 4th FD in five days and extremely grumpy, and c) life's too short and the weekend is wine and snack time. So I've only done something similar in extremis (ie immediately after two weeks all inclusive holiday!😆)

@sweetgingercat that sounds ok to me too. Before I started this I would absent mindedly eat several mini treat size chocs without noticing. So 2 sounds fine. And definitely still a calorie deficit.

I've found day 2 of a b2b quite easy today. I had some rice and a weight watchers tuna/mayo tin for lunch and now I'm having a ready meal of 315 calories with some salad

Borris · 05/03/2024 18:26

@harriethoyle that's hardcore 😳😳

harriethoyle · 05/03/2024 18:37

I can't recommend it @Borris 😆

Kitchen closing on 595 for 1180 over the b2b, although I could see a toasted thin in my future later this evening. I was starving last night!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 05/03/2024 22:03

Had a little crumpet for sups, so new daily total is 729 and 1314 for the b2b.

More crumpets for breakfast tomorrow! Hurrah! 😆

SV this morning with my tapas weight off so hopefully if I'm relatively virtuous today, tomorrow's FD3 will shave a bit more off. Also from next week, DH needs the car on Tuesdays and so I'll be walking home at least part way from the station which should help me move more...

Can I join you? Please help me to get started

Welcome @longpathtohappiness - the more the merrier. Read the long opening post which gives you all of your basic guidelines and ask any questions you like!

Hi all, on day 3 of b2b ( one day was not a fast day just low cal ) I am heading to 16 hours at 12 may try to push it to 18 but I worked out first thing so feeling starving. How are you all doing ?
Does anyone lose without fasting and just under 700 cals ?

Waspie · 06/03/2024 16:08

You are all way more hardcore than me! When the weather cheers up I might think about 3 FD per week. At the moment it's just too cold and wet and miserable to contemplate that much salad Smile

harriethoyle · 06/03/2024 20:17

It's definitely easier in the summer @Waspie although summer also means I want to drink lots of lovely chilled rosè 😆

Morning all

Checking in for a Thursday FD. Was going to do yesterday but I had my week muddled up so didn't end up working.
The menu for the kids tonight is cottage pie so I'm just calculating if I can have a small portion of that or even just the mince bit without mash so I'm not having a different meal...

harriethoyle · 07/03/2024 08:49

I'm with you @OohMrDarcy signing in but already ravenous 😆

I'd just have a half portion of cottage pie with mounds of vegetables rather than cooking separately too!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 07/03/2024 09:03

that is what I was thinking @harriethoyle - smaller portion, and maybe don't put cheese on top of my bit to reduce it more cals wise.

good luck for today!

Waspie · 07/03/2024 10:21

Morning - I'm with you both for a fast day today.

I would definitely do a small amount of the cottage pie @OohMrDarcy rather than cook something separate. I'm doing fajitas for my son tonight so DP and I will have the spiced chicken and veges but without the rest.

Mmm rose (keyboard won't do the accent for some reason!) Another perk of the warmer months @harriethoyle

sweetgingercat · 07/03/2024 11:22

Also back for a one day fast, lettuce at the ready! Good luck fellow Thursday fasters…

Tinydancer123 · 07/03/2024 14:02

Hi all - ended the 3 day fast and stayed the same..... not sure if it is the weekend or the time of the month :( Wishing you all a big loss !

harriethoyle · 07/03/2024 16:27

The woman opposite me on my train is eating the most fragrant panettone... I may lean across and lick it!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 07/03/2024 18:54

Kitchen closed on somewhere around 450 with my small portion of cottage pie and my goodness was it delicious!

Hope you had fun licking the pannetone @harriethoyle

harriethoyle · 08/03/2024 08:55

Crumpets for breakfast this morning and biscuits at work. Happy Friday! 😆

See you all back here on Monday, have great weekends all.

OP posts:
Waspie · 08/03/2024 09:34

Well done Thursday fasters! I closed at 511 calories, so pretty good. Off to the cinema tonight but I shall avoid the popcorn and treats counter and make do with a diet pepsi.

Enjoy those carbs harriethoyle Smile

Anyone fasting today? If so, good luck!

sweetgingercat · 08/03/2024 17:32

Ooh I had a brilliant day yesterday… I had a deadline and literally forgot all about eating. Had an end of day salad and kitchen closed at 398! Brilliant 😀

well done everyone else enjoy your weekends and see you back here on Monday…

Tinydancer123 · 08/03/2024 18:02

Well done all that smashed it

Today has been very bad - I have a cold and all I have done is eat badly !!! At least 300 plus over tdde x

berryhand · 11/03/2024 07:23

Morning all, I'm back! Was absolutely taken out with flu last week so no FDs. Easing myself back in today.

How is everyone doing?

harriethoyle · 11/03/2024 08:36

Morning @berryhand glad you feel better. I'm fasting today and b2b Weds and Thurs. Seeing if that prevents last week's Wednesday scoff fest!
