Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Hi all trying to catch up. Happy weekend all. Lost a pound this week . I hope you have had a good week and weekend x

OohMrDarcy · 29/02/2024 21:31

@Tinydancer123 - I wouldn't say it's bad as such, however if I remember correctly from first time around, your body won't burn fat whilst it is processing the alcohol - it's why it's not recommended to drink the night before or after a FD... I'm trying to remember the poster who dug into loads of the science back when I was doing this previously but can't recall their name I'm afraid!

@sweetgingercat - well done! Are you not starving with no protein? I have to base all my FDs around it or I struggle! The peeing is a good sign !

Thank you for info . I lost a pound but nearly at goal and it is slower no doubt the wine did not help xx

OohMrDarcy · 01/03/2024 20:10

A pound is a pound, well done @Tinydancer123 !

OohMrDarcy · 04/03/2024 08:16

Morning all

Week 4 weigh in :
111kg meaning a loss of 0.4kg and a total loss of 3.8kg

Am a combination of annoyed and happy today - On Friday morning I know I was lighter than this, so I know its either a weekend undoing good work or a digestion timing issue.
I know I was under or around TDEE, but I also know I ended up having 2 cocktails on Saturday - knew this might happen as a result, so not the end of the world at all, but I was so close to hitting my first mini goal (110kg) - ah well there is always this week, and its still progress either way!

Checking in for a Monday FD, not doing a b2b this week (currently anyway) but planning 2 definite FDs with a potential for a third if I'm feeling it. Just under a month until my holiday and would be really nice to get a few more kg gone by then!

Hope everyone had a good weekend, anyone joining me for Monday FD ?

sweetgingercat · 04/03/2024 09:08

We’ll done @OohMrDarcy and @Tinydancer123.

Checking in for the first day of a b2b this week although I’m a bit unsure about tomorrow as I’m out in the evening with my family.

Good luck everyone…

Waspie · 04/03/2024 09:12

Morning fellow fasters.

Good losses @Tinydancer123 and @OohMrDarcy - well done to you both. That 110Kg is just around the corner MrD.

I will join you in a fast day today. I haven't weighed myself, but I doubt I lost anything from just one week of 5:2. I also had a disaster on Saturday which will have undone any good work achieved during the week - a jam doughnut and a flat white coffee for lunch then a takeaway biryani and two glasses of malbec for dinner.

Today's menu is - black coffee for breakfast, one egg and dry fried mushrooms for lunch then salmon fillet with stir fried vegetables for dinner. Yoga after work tonight, which will be welcomed as I went on a mammoth walk with the dog yesterday and my hips are still aching this morning!

harriethoyle · 04/03/2024 09:56

Morning all, I'm signing in for day one of b2b after a very boozy weekend away in Spain. Great fun but fairly catastrophic scales-wise! Going to fast today, tomorrow and Thursday.

Good luck everyone!

JemimaFuddle · 04/03/2024 10:15

I will be joining the fasters today.

I will subsist on miso soup, lettuce and cottage cheese all day and make a a mushroom and been chili for dinner later. I have a circuit training session at lunch time today as well.

Tinydancer123 · 04/03/2024 19:49

Hi all how are you ? Sorry I am still unable to tag people ! I hope the weekend went well. I just kept scoffing and then that dreaded time of the month happened . I fasted today and kept under 600 but it was bad foods due to hormones :( xxx

If it makes you feel any better I think friday and saturday were 2000 plus days ..... I was like Slimer from Ghostbusters on the sweet trolley 🤣🫣Here with you to start again !

Borris · 04/03/2024 20:01

Hope all the fasters have had a good day. I'm on day 1 of a b2b. Had a small amount of rice with tuna and tomato for lunch and now as Asda spag Bol (280 cals) plus a large salad. Also drank lots of fizzy water.

harriethoyle · 04/03/2024 20:31

Kitchen closing on 585. I've been famished all day 😆 had an amazing break thanks @Tinydancer123 @berryhand . Back to earth with a bump today though!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 04/03/2024 20:34

Kitchen closed on 580 here today, drank mountains of water and feeling pretty good.

No b2b tomorrow as I'm giving blood.

Hope Spain was fabulous @harriethoyle !

Borris · 04/03/2024 22:05

Does everyone weigh themselves, or can you just go by how you look and how your clothes fit?

Waspie · 05/03/2024 07:15

Hope everyone's FD's went well yesterday! Sounds like a good weekend harriet - I'm jealous Smile

@tinydancer 😂

Kitchen closed here on 522 for my FD - plus dog walk and 90 minutes of yoga so I feel quite virtuous! I did feel horrible around 3pm and then I realised I hadn't drunk much water. Rookie error. Drank a litre of water and felt much better.

Feel better soon @berryhand Flowers

Good luck for the back to back day 2's and all those fasting today.

OohMrDarcy · 05/03/2024 07:50

@Borris you do whatever works for you. Everyone has different thoughts and feelings re numbers on the scales so just do whatever makes you feel happiest / most confident

harriethoyle · 05/03/2024 08:57

Signing in for day 2 b2b.

@Borris i weigh because I think it's too easy to fool yourself with clothes sizing! If you weigh yourself and look at the general trend, rather than fixating on daily fluctuations, it allows you to check things are consistently going downwards, as they should be.

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 05/03/2024 09:50

That is exactly what I do @harriethoyle - I've created an excel chart so I can see the trend line!

sweetgingercat · 05/03/2024 10:36

Bad day for me yesterday 725 cals. But I did a massive and energetic clear out of the garden for a few hours (and felt exhausted afterwards) so hopefully that made up for it.

For the first time ever I ate an M&S ready meal, a fish pie which was 320 cals. It felt decadent after my usual salad and it was more potato than pie. I reckon I could do better with a homemade one, with less cals too. But on fast days I don't want to get too involved in the kitchen just in case I get tempted.

I don't weigh. I get too obsessed and emotionally involved and disappointed if I don't lose so I go by decreasing clothes sizes. I find a tight pair of jeans a very useful thing to wear on a fast day!

I'm going to do a 16/8 today so I can go out tonight. Good luck fellow fasters...

harriethoyle · 05/03/2024 12:53

I don't think 725 is bad at all @sweetgingercat I'd count that as a win personally!

OP posts:
Tinydancer123 · 05/03/2024 14:39

B2B but I ditched the fast today ( not sure if this is ok - I noramlly do a 16/ 8 on b2b )but am doing 500 cals. I have had nothing but tea all day and willl close with a meal and maybe a crumpet.
Has anyone done 3 in a row b2b ?

I hope you are all doing well !

sweetgingercat · 05/03/2024 14:45

Oh you’re lovely @harriethoyle… I think it was munching on two mini twix bars at the end of the day that made me feel like I’d lost control!

@Tinydancer123 there used to be someone on here who fasted three days in a row and seemed to do well with it but they aren’t here now. I think by the end of the second day she didn’t feel hungry at all.
