Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Hi All, Kitchen closed on 582 this evening, but after a week off I've found it hard to get back into it. First I had sa cold and then someone else's big birthday celebration and somehow I've lost my 5:2 mojo. I'm sure I'll get it back again but at the moment fasting just seems like hard work!

Well done everyone!

OohMrDarcy · 27/02/2024 20:41

Kitchen closed.on 584 plus a 45 min walk with the pooch this evening - very pleased with that!

Congratulations to all today's fasters, some good wins out there

@Borris I'd call that a massive win personally, not sure I could resist pizza!

Currently planning a b2b tomorrow , as always - will see how I feel in the morning so no pressure

JemimaFuddle · 27/02/2024 21:12

Thanks @harriethoyle @Waspie @berryhand

Sadly it's worse and I now have a sore throat...

I blame my friends toddler 😂

Esmereldapawpatrol · 27/02/2024 22:29

Finished on 700 and I'm happy with that. I haven't felt that hungry today as I think I've made better food choices. Protein at lunch and then a homemade lentil d
ahl for dinner has done the trick.

Well done everyone!

Borris · 27/02/2024 22:45

I have another question that I pondered as I had my dinner tonight.
I have saved a couple of slices of pizza from work today to have for lunch tomorrow when I'm not on a FD. Could I have had them for dinner tonight and then my planned low calorie dinner that I ate tonight for lunch tomorrow? Because over the week I would then have eaten the exact same number of calories. Or does the fasting for 2 days and then more calories on the other 5 do magic to your metabolism?

Borris · 27/02/2024 22:45

Hope you feel better soon @JemimaFuddle

OohMrDarcy · 28/02/2024 07:30

Morning all

Checking in for FD2

Feel better soon. @JemimaFuddle

@Borris - whilst technically you could have done that, I think the fasting itself does have lots of benefits that you'd have lost, to do with cell regeneration etc ... But suspect you'd lose almost the same weight wise. Maybe a little less as without the fasting, your blood sugar is going to be higher potentially stopping as much fat burn (if I remember the science correctly)

harriethoyle · 28/02/2024 08:45

@Borris I agree with @OohMrDarcy . I think that the key to fasting is resetting blood sugars, giving your body time off from digestion etc. Also for me, I like a couple of strict days and then not thinking about it for the rest of the week. If you start calorie counting, that means you've got to do it every day of the week. Blow that for a game of soldiers!

I am so fecking hungry today... I've already eaten half my lunch and four custard creams! I'm like the very hungry caterpillar!!

OohMrDarcy · 28/02/2024 13:52

I'm struggling a little today also @harriethoyle , not convinced the b2b wasn't the best plan today! I've decided to increase my cals slightly to make it more managable rather than blow it out the water.

OohMrDarcy · 28/02/2024 19:38

Kitchen closed on 664 which I'm happy with.

About to take the pooch out for his evening wander and then a night time tea on my return and that's another b2b in the bag

How has everyone else done today?

berryhand · 29/02/2024 07:39

Good work @OohMrDarcy! I was at an event in the office yesterday then went out for dinner so ate pretty much everything.

Working at home today so going to try to be a bit more sensible and then do last FD of the week tomorrow.

sweetgingercat · 29/02/2024 11:25

Morning all, anyone fasting today? I’m going for my third FD this week… I definitely need to as I ate a lot of crap food yesterday ☹️

OohMrDarcy · 29/02/2024 17:19

Hope your FD is going to plan @sweetgingercat

I'm currently thinking of getting a FD3 in tomorrow too @berryhand

Tinydancer123 · 29/02/2024 19:50

Was at 506 and then had a small red wine and crisps how bad is this ? Bad day at work ! How are you ?

sweetgingercat · 29/02/2024 21:05

Ooh Yes, thanks for asking @OohMrDarcy I have had a small salad of lettuce and tomatoes with a teaspoon of Belazu red pepper paste (delicious and low cal) three cups of tea and loads of water and I'm going to have a late supper of salad with a pitta bread and a bit of feta cheese shortly. Very happy with today. Peeing like all the time though! 😅

OohMrDarcy · 29/02/2024 21:31

@Tinydancer123 - I wouldn't say it's bad as such, however if I remember correctly from first time around, your body won't burn fat whilst it is processing the alcohol - it's why it's not recommended to drink the night before or after a FD... I'm trying to remember the poster who dug into loads of the science back when I was doing this previously but can't recall their name I'm afraid!

@sweetgingercat - well done! Are you not starving with no protein? I have to base all my FDs around it or I struggle! The peeing is a good sign !

sweetgingercat · 01/03/2024 00:22

@OohMrDarcy On the first (particularly) and second day I need more protein, but by the third fast of the week I don't particularly feel hungry and I find I can do it much better.

I used to eat smoked salmon which was delicious and great for suppressing hunger, but I got put off by the price and the really horrible stories of how they are stuffed with antibiotics to stop sea slug and other infections. Tuna doesn't really do the same thing for me and smoked mackerel, which I also love, is higher cal. It's a shame. What are your best go to proteins?

OohMrDarcy · 01/03/2024 07:37

Morning all

Checking in for FD3 - probably had a bit of a carb heavy dinner last night (baked potato) so expecting to struggle a.bit today and will have my main meal at lunchtime to help combat. Going for a version of chicken Caesar salad (no croutons / light dressing etc) I think

@sweetgingercat I tend to stick to chicken / prawns / eggs for FD protein, sometimes just cheese. I get what you mean about some things getting expensive though! I'm not a big fish person so don't have often.

Anyone else mental and doing a Friday FD?

Waspie · 01/03/2024 09:55

Morning all, just catching up with the last couple of days. Good luck with FD3 @OohMrDarcy and anyone else fasting today.

I was going to do FD2 on Wednesday but I sort of forgot and bought a large cappuccino from the coffee shop on the way to the office - whoops. Seemed pointless even trying after that. So FD2 happened yesterday instead. Very busy day at work which helped. MFP tells me my calories were 499 (bang on!) I was really hungry at about 3am today - I was awake listening to yet more pounding rain - so this morning I've already had a piece of granary toast with a smear of peanut butter. I'm not fasting today but I'm going to try and keep calories under my 1600 NFD limit and I will be enjoying a glass of red wine tonight!

berryhand · 01/03/2024 10:11

I'm joining you @OohMrDarcy. I ate absolutely terribly yesterday as it was first day of period. No lunch, 13 million snacks, lot of chocolate. So FD3 today is going to be a struggle.

Planning noodles for lunch and chicken and tomato M&S meal for tea. The usual.

OohMrDarcy · 01/03/2024 17:08

@Waspie well done for getting through your FD and enjoy the wine tonight!

How's it going @berryhand ? I'm doing better than expected so far!

OohMrDarcy · 01/03/2024 18:28

Kitchen closed on around 450 today, should have been 492 but I didn't enjoy the pack of chicken I bought in co-op to have with my salad so left about 1/4 of it. Just the usual night time tea in a bit and I'll be done.

How has everyone else done?

I'm looking forward to a planned McDonald's tomorrow, within TDEE so I can keep my 😇 but treat myself to a lazy night!

berryhand · 01/03/2024 18:49

Well done @OohMrDarcy, excellent work. Very jealous of your maccies tomorrow. Kitchen closing here on about 550 which could be worse. I've had the sort of day where I could quite happily down a bottle of wine.

OohMrDarcy · 01/03/2024 19:21

Sounds like a bloody well done then @berryhand
