Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Kitchen closed on 526!

Just more water and my bedtime tea to go!

Really proud of myself for managing this one even joined in for a roast - half a plate of veg and half a chicken breast plus a teeny roast potato and dribble of gravy.

All cals counted are approximate but happy with that as it's loads less than I would normally have on a Sunday so a win either way

Bring on next week for everyone!

harriethoyle · 11/02/2024 19:09

@OohMrDarcy you're a maniac and a hero 🤣 I'll be signing in tomorrow for the first of two. Going to do next Sunday I think seeing I can only do 2 week days. I'll keep you all posted!

I am in awe @OohMrDarcy! The less said about my Sunday the better. Defo here for b2b tomorrow!!

OohMrDarcy · 11/02/2024 19:24

Haha loving the praise but it is a needs must situation.

Tomorrow taking my 93 year old nan for lunch, Tuesday is DDs birthday and Sunday next week is mine so just fitting it in while I can!

harriethoyle · 11/02/2024 20:34

@berryhand I've had eggs, chips and beans for tea. And gin 🤣

I love that your nan is still out and about at 93 @OohMrDarcy 💗

Signing in as well!

OohMrDarcy · 12/02/2024 08:54

Good luck to those fasting today.

Official weigh in today one week in 113.1kg - loss of 1.7kg.
I'll take it as a steady start, I know I've not been drinking enough water except on FDs so will aim to improve that this week

Tinydancer123 · 12/02/2024 09:38

Hi all ! I hope you had a lovely weekend. Mine was very bad ! Not sure which days to fast as I would say coffee is very meeded today ! Wishing you well

JemimaFuddle · 12/02/2024 11:45

We have house-guests this week which includes teenage girls who I would rather not want to model eating very little to so taking this week out.

harriethoyle · 12/02/2024 11:50

Well done @OohMrDarcy that's a great start - I too am concentrating on the water this week. Have a full glass on my desk which I keep re-filling and have asked the DSD for a water bottle for my birthday! Definitely think it will help me have lovely clear glowing skin if nothing else... Cheaper than profilho!

Morning all, I’m not fasting today. I’m still ill with my cold and I’m going to the theatre tomorrow and have a family party on Weds so I really need to get well for both. It’s a bed day for me… I’m a bit pissed off… Good luck everyone!

berryhand · 12/02/2024 12:21

Hope you feel better soon @sweetgingercat! I'm bloody starving today. That's what inhaling pizza express and wine on a Sunday evening does to you...

harriethoyle · 12/02/2024 13:05

Me too @berryhand turns out Sunday tea consisting entirely of carbs doesn't help with Monday hunger 😂 My usual tuna thin feels positively skeletal today!

berryhand · 12/02/2024 20:39

Kitchen closed on 647 here but Christ I am starving. Cup of tea and an early night I think! Well done @harriethoyle, are you going again tomorrow? Anyone else joining?

harriethoyle · 12/02/2024 20:55

I'm your starvation twin @berryhand 🤣🙈 chugging water like it's going out of fashion!

Back tomorrow for day 2...

OohMrDarcy · 13/02/2024 09:09

Keep chugging that water @harriethoyle ! You're doing well

DDs birthday here, and planning b2b tomorrow/ Thursday I think tbc!

berryhand · 13/02/2024 11:09

Same @harriethoyle! Downing water and tea. Gonna have to go for an 11.30am lunch.

Soba noodle pot today then M&S thai curry for tea. Already dreaming of tomorrow's TDEE.

Esmereldapawpatrol · 13/02/2024 11:44

Hi all, can I join you?

I am really wanting to lose some weight (and I need to!). Tried every diet going in the past but I think 5:2 and/or intermittent fasting is something I could stick to long term. Really busy family life and working full time so need to get my head in to it.

Do most of you do 5:2 and IF on your non fasting days?

berryhand · 13/02/2024 12:20

Hi @Esmereldapawpatrol, welcome! This is a v friendly thread and I've found it really helpful.

I generally do b2b FDs on Monday and Tues and then another single FD on a Friday. Don't really do IF as such but generally try not to eat super late at night so probably inadvertently do at least a 12-hour stint most days.

I've lost about a stone since the start of the year and am in a similar position to you - work 4 days a week in a v busy job, two small DC. Always struggled to stick to just calorie counting full time so really pleased with how this is working out.

OohMrDarcy · 13/02/2024 12:34

Welcome @Esmereldapawpatrol

We are a friendly bunch

I tend to 16:8 90% of the time anyway but mostly by accident as I am rarely hungry for breakfast

You need to find what works for you long term so maybe try just 5:2 initially and see how it goes

Esmereldapawpatrol · 13/02/2024 13:26

Thank you @berryhand and @OohMrDarcy I think I will try 2 FD a week and see how I get on.

Do you track calories on the days you aren't fasting?

berryhand · 13/02/2024 15:06

Yes I try and log everything in myfitnesspal (confess I don't always manage it on non-FD) just to try and keep track but I don't do any mad cutting back.
