Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Neither. I follow 5 / 2 so 500 cals two days a week, normal eating on the other two days (being mindful of not eating processed crap and getting all my veg etc). I often skip breakfast as I am genuinely not hungry first thing in the morning but I don't have a strict eating window.

Tinydancer123 · 08/02/2024 13:04

Ah ok I follow 5:2 aswell but thought I had to fast . How does this work for you ?

harriethoyle · 08/02/2024 13:34

So @Tinydancer123 I would say I fast for 24 hours in that I count the start of my FD as being the time I awaken and the end the next as the same. So in 24 hours, I'll aim for 500 cals if that makes sense? I tend to skip breakfast so probably don't eat at the beginning for c. 16 hours ie 8pm - 12 noon or so.

No need to fast as well unless you want to.
The only reason I can stick to this diet is that I only have to be strict 7 days a week!

OohMrDarcy · 08/02/2024 18:55

Survived!

Finishing the day on around 600 which I'll definitely take

Kitchen closed except for my nighttime tea in a bit.

Looking forward to lunch tomorrow 😋

JemimaFuddle · 08/02/2024 19:12

Is it the pukka night time tea @OohMrDarcy@OohMrDarcy? I love that.

OohMrDarcy · 08/02/2024 19:24

It is! Delicious isn't it

harriethoyle · 08/02/2024 22:39

Kitchen closing on 575 or thereabouts. Not too shabby!

Not sure of my tally today. I had a usual salad for lunch and then a bit of home made cottage pie this evening that I made for the non dieters in this house (who then complained and didn't eat it). It was perfectly delicious.

I'm feeling rotten with a cold, that's my excuse.

@JemimaFuddle I love daal, so I'm definitely going to make this! Thank you...

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 09/02/2024 07:24

I had a massive fail yesterday! I’m still getting into the swing of 5:2, and seem to do a week of two successful fasts, then a week of one, on repeat! I’m sure if I just keep going it’ll all come together (fingers crossed…..)

well done to all the champions who fasted yesterday

Tinydancer123 · 09/02/2024 09:22

Morning all , I hope you are all well and looking forward to the weekend.

I ended on 534 weigh in was this morning and I nhave remained the same :( I had hoped for a loss. I am hopeful the time of the month is the culprit for this. Anyone find it a struggle to lose at this time ?

OohMrDarcy · 09/02/2024 11:23

weighed in this morning and 1.4kg down since weigh in at the start of the week - will do official weigh in Sunday to keep me focused, otherwise it gets shot to shit over the weekends!

harriethoyle · 09/02/2024 13:27

yes @Tinydancer123 I worked out that was what kept me static last week.

I'm 1.5lb down from where I was this time last week which I'm happy with! Only 2FD next week though as I have a work drinks and dinner thing on Thursday night which is a bit annoying. I'll do IF on non FD to try and limit any damage though.

Tinydancer123 · 09/02/2024 13:31

Well done !!!! Amazing. Fingers crossed I lose however today has been very bad and I have consumed too much chocolate.

berryhand · 09/02/2024 13:52

@Tinydancer123 I gained last week when on period, v frustrating! Was gone again afterwards though. On FD today, had a small bowl of chicken and veg noodles so far. Going to try and stick to weigh in once a week too I think. Find the variables annoying and think I need to be doing it much less and at the same time each week.

JemimaFuddle · 09/02/2024 14:00

I has a 3 pound loss this week but I think it's because I got my period. Last week it was 0.4 pounds so I guess it averages out. I'm a mere 0.3 pounds under 12 stone for the first time in while!

Tinydancer123 · 09/02/2024 14:03

Well done on fast day. I did 3 this week but no change. Today I am out and will go over cals but going to try and spin later. x

OohMrDarcy · 09/02/2024 20:58

Congrats all that have lost this week!

Those struggling with periods just keep glugging the water and it should come off next week

berryhand · 09/02/2024 22:48

Kitchen closed on 544 consisting of chicken and veg noodles and a cupcake. Not the best advert for healthy WOL but will do better next week. Will do a final weigh in for the week tomorrow morning.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

Tinydancer123 · 10/02/2024 09:53

Hi all , Friday was a TDDE let's just say I went over with wine . Going to try and drink water and focus on a loss ( period stall ) No reduction over weekend but trying to be mindful .

OohMrDarcy · 11/02/2024 07:42

Morning all

I must be mad as I'm going in for a Sunday FD, allowing flexibility if it needs to stretch to a mini. Next week is half term here as well as my eldests 17th and then my birthday next weekend so I'm fitting in FD when I can! After this it will be wednesday I think before I can do one.

Is anyone else crazy and joining me?
