Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Kitchen closed on 740 tonight which is more than I'd have liked but I was bloody starving. Very glad b2b is out the way. Hope everyone has had a good day!

harriethoyle · 13/02/2024 21:29

Closing here on 720 @berryhand and am astonished I've avoided a snaccident... already dreaming of breakfast 😆

OohMrDarcy · 14/02/2024 09:12

Well done to yesterday's fasters!

Checking in for FD1 of the week here

harriethoyle · 14/02/2024 09:36

God speed @OohMrDarcy

Resisted the lure of a chocolate and hazelnut croissant on the way to work this morning and did not buy Galentine's biscuits for the team because I am closest to the kitchen and would have just eaten them! Am attempting to flex my resistance muscle...

Good luck @OohMrDarcy!

I inhaled my marmite on toast this morning. Trying to show some general restraint today today too @harriethoyle so have veggie sushi for lunch.

Another 1l b off this morning which was nice - lost about 12lb overall I think. Same again and I'll be back into healthy bmi territory for the first time since pre-DC...

Tinydancer123 · 14/02/2024 20:03

Well done for the loss. On 2nd day fasting and struggling must be at 700 . Will try again tomoz .....

OohMrDarcy · 14/02/2024 21:52

Oops forgot to post earlier.

Kitchen closed on 520 today so happy with that. Currently feeling good and planning b2b tomorrow but will make a final decision in the morning on that.

Well done for resisting @harriethoyle

Congrats on the loss @berryhand

Keep going @Tinydancer123 - 700 is fine for a tough FD

OohMrDarcy · 15/02/2024 07:46

Morning all

Checking in for FD2!

Currently drinking a coffee and pondering what I'm going to eat today !

harriethoyle · 15/02/2024 09:05

@OohMrDarcy Good luck.today!

@Tinydancer123 I think 700 is fine for a tough fd. I'd count that as a win!

Work drinks tonight and I cannot get drunk so I will be lining my stomach today 🤣

Very pleased with that for day 2 of B2B!

Just my nighttime tea and I'll be done

How did you do @Tinydancer123 ?

OohMrDarcy · 16/02/2024 07:48

Morning all

Feeling good this morning after my b2b, have done a sneaky scales check in - they are continuing in the right direction so now I just need to maintain over my birthday weekend... No major plans but food definitely involved so will aim for on or around TDEE every day 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

@berryhand good luck for today's FD!

berryhand · 16/02/2024 08:01

Good work @OohMrDarcy, 650 is great!

I am already bloody starving as DS was up at 6. Going to be a looooong day. Having my second massive mug of tea. Anyone joining me today?

Tinydancer123 · 16/02/2024 08:37

Hi all , I closed on 600 in 2nd b2b. However still a pound to go to get back to the pre cocktail weight. 😓
Well done all. A normal TDEE day but going to try hard ! What do you all have planned?

Keep drinking @berryhand - we have faith!

Well done @Tinydancer123 !

berryhand · 16/02/2024 20:35

Checking in...it's not actually been too bad a day, been busy so that's been a distraction. Kitchen closing on 536 so I'll take that.

Happy weekend everyone!

OohMrDarcy · 16/02/2024 22:16

Fab, well done @berryhand

berryhand · 17/02/2024 07:59

Gained a bloody pound this morning!! Fuming. Hoping it's just cyclical water retention or whatever.

Is anyone attempting a weekend FD? I am absolutely not 😬

OohMrDarcy · 17/02/2024 21:31

That will be water or food digestion @berryhand - keep glugging and it will sort itself out

Borris · 17/02/2024 23:47

I'm going to rejoin. I'm peak fatness. Had some success 5 yrs ago with 5:2 so hoping to see results again. I'd like to lose about 10kg

harriethoyle · 18/02/2024 08:22

Welcome back @Borris !

I'm attempting a Sunday FD today after a very boozy Thurs-Sat. DH is away on work trip from this afternoon and I've loads of stuff to do so I'm relatively hopeful it'll be successful 😬
