Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

There is defo a link between gut microbiome and anxiety. I
know it just gives my body less to do when I fast. Not sure what it all means. I'm always amazed if I don't eat breakfast and sit down to focus I get a lot done, I just thought maybe it's the idea that if I am good I am rewarding myself in a bit with food that I will really appreciate even more,
Training the dopamine pathway. I'm sure context is everything, if I fasted too much I'd get anxious.

I also have adhd and am wondering about going back on meds...I stopped as they were causing anxiety...anyone do this WOE and take adhd meds?

My anxiety is way worse on fast days!

I was on ADHD meds and stopped them due to the many side effects one of which was extreme lack of appetite which I hated. I wouldn't have needed to do this WOE on meds as I was barely eating on them.

Loving everyone's dedication and enthusiasm.
FD for me today. Last one was Wednesday (after a failed attempt on Tuesday), finished on around 750-800 cals, slightly disappointing.
Yesterday I ate around 1500 cals, plus a weights woprkout at lunch and half hour on the stairmaster after work.
This morning I have been to an early morning strength session, which usually leaves me hungry by now but I'm doing my best to only consume approx 500 cals today, so putting off eating until later! Wish me luck

MistySkiesAreGone · 12/05/2023 10:12

@DreamingLoo I am extremely sensitive to sugar, that often sets anxiety off. Lots of healthy fats work better for me. I've ordered a cholestrol test tho as I want to make sure this is sustainable!

Ah you have reminded me about the lack of appetite. Tbh I also found I had less empathy on ADHD meds. Not sure if they affect the microbiome.

I think I can get what I want from ADHD meds i.e. more regulated and focused, with consistent weight training? I have been building up and I think every 2-3 days is what I need.

The one major symptom I struggle with is feeling like I have 5,000 processes running at once and therefore less working memory. I think this is the anxiety element of ADHD and something I am working on.

Good luck @florenceandthemac Friday fasters are heroes in my book!

I am starving today, but attempting IF... Need to push through to 1pm to have lunch but I am hangry in the extreme 😂

florenceandthemac · 12/05/2023 12:36

Thanks @harriethoyle I'll only fast on Fridays if I have no evening plan, and this is the last Friday for about 7 weeks that I haven't got plans (except a neurosurgeon appointment this evening but I don't think that counts! Ha). Good luck, it's nearly 1pm!

Onehappymam · 12/05/2023 16:59

FD for me today.

First one in a while, maybe even a month!

Nothing to eat so far, though I’ve had a couple of cans of cherry Pepsi max to get me through. Dinner will be sweet chilli hot smoked salmon with veg.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 12/05/2023 21:56

Hello all it’s me!! Sorry for the radio silence. I got proper poorly in April and was in hospital for a bit but obviously not fasting and then mumsnet logged me out. I hope you are all well and still loosing. I’m back on the pre holiday fast so will hopefully be able to join you soon xxx

EatYourFive · 15/05/2023 07:43

Good morning!
Anyone joining me for a fast today? Doing a single today and hopefully a B2B on Wednesday and Thursday. Three months now until my tropical beach holiday and still have plenty of bulge to beat, c'mon let's do this!

Buntyforgirls · 15/05/2023 07:59

Hope everybody had a lovely weekend.
FD for me today. Already been the gym to a strength session, and planning to do some exercise at lunch to keep me distracted from eating!! Then a power walk with my friend tonight (rather than getting in bed early 🤪).
As a grazer, I definitely find FDs hard and have to exercise or keep active to delay myself from eating. Unfortunately I sit at a desk all day for work which makes me want to graze!!

harriethoyle · 15/05/2023 09:24

@absolutelyknackeredcow just saw your update - so sorry you've had such a rotten time. Fingers crossed you're on the mend 🤞

Fasting for me today!

Hope you're feeling much better @absolutelyknackeredcow

@MistySkiesAreGone I've never fasted on ADHD meds, but I will be going through titration again at some point this year, as discussed with my doctor, so I might bring up the question of fasting at some point.

florenceandthemac · 15/05/2023 14:24

How's all my fellow fasters getting on?
I can't wait for tea! Grin

Trickedbyadoughnut · 15/05/2023 15:31

Hello @florenceandthemac it's 4.30 p.m. where I am and my poke bowl is sitting on the side of my desk looking very tempting. Not sure how much longer I can hold off!

harriethoyle · 15/05/2023 15:34

Fricking starving @florenceandthemac and already day dreaming about tonight's baked fish and peas...!!

OP posts:
florenceandthemac · 15/05/2023 15:49

I'm starving too!!

Buntyforgirls · 15/05/2023 20:35

Managed to end on just over 600, hub added sauce to the stir fry!
Hope you all enjoyed dinner!
Going to try a mini FD tomorrow.
See you in the morning...

harriethoyle · 15/05/2023 20:39

Kitchen closing on an almost perfect 497! I have been hungry today though... Mini tomorrow as I have some mac and cheese which needs eating so I will do usual FD no breakfast thin lunch and then have mac and cheese tea. Also got to do a huge shop which I don't fancy doing on a FD!!

OP posts:
florenceandthemac · 15/05/2023 21:10

Well done all!
So what is a mini FD?

EatYourFive · 16/05/2023 07:51

I also finished at just under 500 yesterday. Not fasting today but will be back here tomorrow for another FD.

harriethoyle · 16/05/2023 09:45

@florenceandthemac for me, it's a day coming in under 1000 and where I skip breakfast so I get the IF benefits. Today, I'm doing the normal FD routine that I follow but it's just that tonight's tea will likely be c. 500 cals and so that will come in at c. 720 cals.

Tomorrow I'll do a proper FD which will be c. 500.

However, this is because I am trying to get my holiday weight off - 4kgs on, 2 already off, so I am supersizing my fasting!

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 16/05/2023 10:04

Successful fast day yesterday, but a little disappointing to see the scales hadn't moved since last Monday. I didn't think I'd got too mad at the week, so it may also be the wrong time of the month.

I will perserve on my second FD of my B2B and may try to fit in a third FD or a mini on Friday.

Good luck fasters!
