Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@florenceandthemac fasting today and probably Thursday for me. For exercise, I can pretty much do anything I would do when not fasting now, but I do have to make sure I have a stock cube drink to help with my salts and sometimes I take zero calorie electrolytes (High 5) for a really intense session. That's wasn't the case when I first fasted though, I did have to work up to it. Now I do runs (only 5k at the moment - very unfit! but I've done up to 16k fasted), yoga, Pilates and swimming up to around 2k in summer. The only thing that's a problem is cycling because that makes me stupidly hungry (and is partly to blame for my weight gain when I was doing 20 miles a day to work!).

MistySkiesAreGone · 09/05/2023 06:41

Hello can I join you? I lost two stone last year on F800, regained 9lb and since December have relost the 9lb. I'm a healthy BMI and just have that stubborn last 5lb which I carry on my hips as spare to lose. I switched to maintenance gradually a couple of weeks ago (4/3 then 5/2). Last week I did 6/1 and was very happy as lost 1lb overall which is a sustainable level for me, at least for next couple of weeks!

One way I slipped up last year was not really following a healthy diet so this year I am still counting and logging food, while I learn a few more recipes and embed the principles more. When I hit goal weight I will maybe count and log a little longer just to make sure I am clear on portion sizes, extras etc. for maintenance, and I will still log my calories on the fast day. My fast day is 800 calories, it's the new Fast800 not the old 500 calories, hope that is okay. Saturday seems to work well as a fast day as I don't have to be alert for work.

This Saturday I am doing a 2.5km Swimathon so I may have a shorter eating window and may go for 900 or even 1000.

I carried on exercising this year throughout and am doing 3 cardio and 2 strength sessions a week. I have gained muscle, but the inches lost have increased. I find that cardio suppresses my appetite, I think it's the post workout hormones.

Outside the fast day I work on a zig zag diet e.g 1 day maintenance calories, 2 days slightly less calories (e.g
maintenance minus 20%), 1 day maintenance calories, 2 days slightly less calories, 1 fast day, which seems to keep me happy.

harriethoyle · 09/05/2023 07:10

Morning all, I'm back from holidays and 4kg heavier after a fortnight of indulgence 😬 FDs today and tomorrow, a mini on Thursday and a virtuous weekend. Aiming to have a least 2kg off by the end of the week...

Anyone fasting with me today?

OP posts:
Buntyforgirls · 09/05/2023 07:56

Can I join please?
And will join you in a fast day today. I used to do 5:2 successfully. I am not really overweight, a few pounds to lose, but my menopausal tummy means I am struggling to fit into clothes I've worn for years. And I feel totally bleurgh.
I need some self discipline badly.
Thank you!

florenceandthemac · 09/05/2023 07:56

Hope you had a good holiday!
I'm fasting today, dreading it to be honest. I'm already hungry!

DreamingLoo · 09/05/2023 08:27

FD for me. I will have a shake for lunch and tuna salad with boiled eggs for dinner. Lost half a stone so far, in 2 weeks. This is good going for me, particularly given I don't stick to 500 cals on fast days; weight doesn't usually come off so fast.

harriethoyle · 09/05/2023 08:31

Welcome @Buntyforgirls and fab username 🤣

It was a great holiday @florenceandthemac thank you - incredibly relaxing and restorative and worth every single gained gram!!

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 09/05/2023 10:21

@harriethoyle sounds fabulous! If it's any consolation, I'd gone up 3.5 kg in a week on my holidays - I did a 4:3 and two minis when celebrating birthday meals with friends and this morning I weighed in 1 kg less than before holiday, so it was definitely a lot of water retention.

Good luck @florenceandthemac I was hungry early on yesterday but ended up feeling fine in the afternoon!

@DreamingLoo good results - happy fasting!

Welcome @Buntyforgirls

florenceandthemac · 09/05/2023 13:49

I'm not having the best FD. I was so hungry this morning (didn't have a substantial tea last night) so I had a Time Out wafer 😭(112 cals)
Just done an upper body workout then had a tin of soup, so I have about 100 calories left for something later on! Not ideal but I just needed to eat now....

Buntyforgirls · 09/05/2023 18:21

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!
Delighted that I am ending the day on about 600 calories and the rest of my water/ bedtime green tea rather than couple of glasses of wine. No sugar consumed.
Also a pilates class.
Light day planned tomorrow and then FD Thursday.
Good luck all!

thatsahardno · 09/05/2023 18:28

Hello 👋🏻
De-lurking to ask a question. I’m an intermittent 5:2-er, and always find that my anxiety is quelled on/after fast days. I believe there is some evidence that fasting can decrease anxiety, but just wondered if anyone else experienced this?

EatYourFive · 09/05/2023 20:32

Welcome @Buntyforgirls and welcome back @harriethoyle! How's everyone been getting on today? I am finishing somewhere below 500, undecided whether to fast again tomorrow or on Thursday.
@thatsahardno I'm afraid I have no experience when it comes to fasting and anxiety, hopefully someone else might have some views - welcome anyway, hope you stick around!

Badlifeday · 10/05/2023 06:54

I hadn't heard of that, @thatsahardno though when fasting has been going well for me I have experienced a greater clarity of thought and seem to accomplish more. I normally cope with day to day anxiety by eating, and yet I don't break my fasts when difficult things arise on a fast day. It's strange.

florenceandthemac · 10/05/2023 08:12

Well done to you both @EatYourFive and @Buntyforgirls.
My FD did NOT go as planned yeterday, so I'm giving it another go today, then again on Friday instead of tomorrow. I was just so hungry, and hadn't planned well for it.
I have a run planned for lunch time today, but to be honest running on a FD usually helps me to not eat, strangely, so fingers crossed

harriethoyle · 10/05/2023 09:06

Kitchen closed on 616 yesterday and 1.4kg of holiday bloat off overnight so I'm delighted.

Fasting again today, with you @florenceandthemac @EatYourFive are you joining too?

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 10/05/2023 09:52

Yep I am here @harriethoyle, feeling strong!!!

Well done for losing some of the holiday weight already! I am trying to get back to my PB weight before the half-term and still aiming for a bikini body my mid-August - it's getting closer (August, not the bikini body)!!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 10/05/2023 11:55

Well done @Buntyforgirls @EatYourFive and @harriethoyle for a good FD yesterday!

I'm fasting today - despite a hair-raising morning involving escaped horses and me bending the already injured finger backwards - I haven't eaten anything so I have got past lunch safely!

@florenceandthemac don't worry about yesterday - that's the beauty of intermittent fasting, you can do it today and it will be just as good :) I commented on here last week that there was one day where I just wasn't feeling it and stopped about 11 a.m., but overall I had a great week, so it shouldn't set you back.

@thatsahardno I have ADHD and at first I used to get quite hyper and more anxious on FDs, but now it's definitely the opposite HOWEVER I do not fast more than three days in the week, because I was overdoing it at one point as I was using fasting to seek out the clarity of though, which was unhealthy, IYSWIM. So something to pay attention to.

harriethoyle · 10/05/2023 12:30

Oh lord @Trickedbyadoughnut that would send me diving for the biscuit barrell/gin/toast and marmite!! Hope things are now calmer...

OP posts:
thatsahardno · 10/05/2023 12:42

Interesting, thanks all. I do wonder if it’s the “quiet” of having things under control, which could easily lead into unhealthy ways of thinking/habits. Definitely something to enjoy in moderation. The irony!

Buntyforgirls · 10/05/2023 20:17

Thanks so much everyone, it has been so motivating reading comments of support!
Has made me ready and determined to have my FD tomorrow- overcoming the obstacles I was beginning to place in the way.
Well done to everyone today!

Badlifeday · 11/05/2023 06:43

I'm fasting today. I'm away for the weekend so won't be fasting, so have to make today count! Good luck to everyone on a FD

harriethoyle · 11/05/2023 08:31

Kitchen closed at 690 last night which meant an almost perfect b2b of c.1320 and another 1/2kg of holiday bloat off. Hurrah!

Doing a mini today and then IF on Friday to keep chipping away at holiday gain. Hoping i can get it all off by end of next week 🤞

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 11/05/2023 09:48

Attempted a FD yesterday but ended up as a mini, or 20:4 IF. I was OK all the time I was at work, as there are limited opportunities for food, but when we came home my in-laws dropped off DS so DP could take him to football and kept the girls for a bit longer, so I had the house to myself. This hardly ever happens and I just wanted to chill and watch Friends with a cup of tea and biscuits, so I did Grin. I ended up eating half a carton of the chilli bean soup I like, and a pitta bread stuffed with chicken and cucumber, so not terrible choices, and no alcohol.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 11/05/2023 10:52

I'm also fasting @Badlifeday, @Buntyforgirls and @harriethoyle. Kitchen closed yesterday on 820 calories but I did have a bit of toast with my scrambled eggs, so I've started off the day a bit peckish - but it will pass. Trying to remember that despite the losses, I still need to lose 4 kg to get into a normal weight BMI!

@SydneyCarton still sounds like a win and glad you got the house to yourself for a bit!

harriethoyle · 11/05/2023 15:04

Someone had custard creams at lunch and they are my KRYPTONITE.

That'll help with the post hols weight loss...!!
