Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

First B2B for a while as I'm in the office two days this week with no bank holiday to allow me to get away with just the one! No milk in the office fridge so I am having black coffee instead of a cup of tea - I know it's more fast-friendly but bleurrggghhh. Will go out at lunchtime and get some semi-skimmed...

Fasting till dinner which will be spag bol - should come in around 600 calories which leaves me some leeway for a biscuit if I can't hold out. DC have swimming lessons this evening so straight to the pool from work, then home for dinner and what I laughingly call the bedtime routine Hmm - hopefully keeping busy and not snacking.

harriethoyle · 16/05/2023 12:49

I think I'm going to declare today a b2b FD having thought it a mini - just done my sums and tonight's mac and cheese is coming in about 480 cals. Even if I've underestimated that, that still gives me 120 cals left because I was so low yesterday... So I am hoping that makes today a legitimate fast day!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 16/05/2023 17:39

Kitchen closing on 684. Even with the potential for inaccurate guestimating, I'm under 1300 for the b2b. Mini tomorrow I think 😊

SydneyCarton · 17/05/2023 11:30

Ended up on a mini yesterday (c.1000 cals) - turns out one biscuit wasn't enough, and some Easter egg chocolate may also have been consumed...
Second day of b2b so will see how it goes

florenceandthemac · 17/05/2023 11:44

That's amazing @harriethoyle I need some of your willpower.

harriethoyle · 17/05/2023 12:15

Sadly @florenceandthemac I didn't have any on holiday hence having holiday weight to lose now 😜

Have lost just under 1kg this week and hopeful today's mini might shave a few more grams off before tomorrow. At a work dinner tomorrow night then have friends over Fri and Sun so I suspect there'll be a weekend gain to contend with! Only one possible FD next week because of work courses etc which is irritating - I will do IF instead and try and limit the weekday damage...

Anyone else fasting today? I am attempting a b2b having already done a single fast on Monday, not feeling overly motivated.. Will probably close at some over 600 today.

florenceandthemac · 17/05/2023 19:20

I am, although I didn't plan it. I just realised this morning when I wasn't overly starving that I had it in me to fast today.
Currently on 438 cals, think I'm going to have something soon to take me to 550.
I've done a strength workout at lunch and just finished half hour on the stairmaster. Somehow I'm still not starving 🤷🏼‍♀️

florenceandthemac · 17/05/2023 19:21

I should add, this is not like me...
I'm usually struggling to come in under 700 on FD

harriethoyle · 17/05/2023 20:25

I'm not fasting but I'm mindful. Basically had yoghurt and granola then usual fd lunch and tea. Probably closing on c.950? Happy with that for a nfd!

@harriethoyle 👏🏼

EatYourFive · 17/05/2023 21:00

Excellent work @harriethoyle and well done @florenceandthemac! I have struggled today after a very easy fast on Monday. Hopefully can manage another FD tomorrow but not feeling overly confident.

Sometimes they're a real challenge @EatYourFive well done for sticking in! Excellent fasting for you too @florenceandthemac 👍

OK gonna try a day2 B2B. Not sure it will be successful but let's see. Any other Thursday fasters here today?

harriethoyle · 18/05/2023 11:18

Good luck @EatYourFive - I'm out on a work jolly tonight which will boozy so no doubt this week's progress will be swiftly undone 😂Another kg of holiday weight off this week which I'm happy with though.

EatYourFive · 18/05/2023 11:39

Thanks @harriethoyle! Your plans sound like fun, enjoy! I'm acutely aware I need to up my efforts when it comes to fasting (months of plateau now with the same 3-4 kg coming and going) but somehow it's still so difficult to find motivation for a third FD each week. Holding on for now!! 😬

harriethoyle · 18/05/2023 12:27

I'm in exactly the same state @EatYourFive and it's frustrating AND my own fault...!! I'm just going to have to prioritise FDs more I think. Needs must... Have a staycation week at the end of the month and will aim to do at least two that week instead of initial plan of zero 😆

PersisFord · 18/05/2023 16:28

Hello <wave> can I join in? I'm a veteran 5:2, have been doing it since 3rd baby (now 7!) and have cruised around my target weight fairly easily. BUT.....I've been unwell and my routine is all out and I'm just struggling with the motivation at the moment and would like some company.

I'll weigh in tomorrow, and fire up my MFP.....but currently on my 2nd FD of the week, so far so good, but am working from home which is a massive additional challenge esp at this boring nibbly time of day....so here I am, sipping some hot water and sitting on my hands not to go fridge raiding!

Another problem I'm having at the moment is I'm just so bored of all of my FD meals. I am toying with the idea of just doing a 24 hour fast instead.

I'm sure I'll get to know you all, but thanks for having me and solidarity to Thursday fasters!!

Buntyforgirls · 19/05/2023 09:27

Hello to @PersisFord ! Good luck!
I am doing a Friday Fast, which will help me avoid the wine and bread I usually start the weekend off with!
Had a successful first week, but am motivated and enthusiastic at the moment, let's see where I am in 6 weeks, next year...
I feel so much better already, good luck to everyone today too and enjoy the lovely sunshine!
Also...I am already hungry, oops, but determined!

harriethoyle · 19/05/2023 12:01

Good luck @Buntyforgirls I never even attempt Friday fasts because FRIDAY NIGHT IS WINE NIGHT!! 😂🍷

Welcome @PersisFord you're in the right place for solidarity and support. I find WFH fasts really difficult so I can sympathise... Hope you managed to resist!

Doing well do far on 5 cups of tea with milk, fab.

Badlifeday · 19/05/2023 19:04

Have any of you read any books about fasting? I'm approaching the one year mark and thinking I need something to give me a boost

MistySkiesAreGone · 20/05/2023 11:49

@Badlifeday well it's not just on fasting but the Fast800 Original Book explained the priniciples .

I recently read Fast Like A Girl but it is dearth on science.

I recommend the Zoe podcast, they have episodes on fasting. I'm not sure there is actually a lot of science that longer fasts are beneficial, not saying they aren't but the studies haven't proven it yet.

Just had a mini FD at 100 cals with a 1.2lb loss today. Also NSV went to gym, and (drum roll) lost 1.2% body fat in 2 weeks and my metabolic age is now 12 years younger. 4 years ago it was 12 years older.

MistySkiesAreGone · 20/05/2023 11:50

1000 cals I mean!
