Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

A good Monday morning to you all (yurk, could have done without the four-legged alarm clock going off at 5 a.m. this morning personally but hey ...)!

I'm back from a week's holiday - weighed myself this morning and have ballooned straight back up 3 kgs ... So hoping some of that will be water retention and back on a FD today! Planning on doing three fasts this week to get my head back in the game.

Anyone with me?

florenceandthemac · 01/05/2023 12:29

I'm fasting tomorrow. Really 'enjoyed' my first FD last Friday, lost a lot of water weight and just felt quite good.
Tomorrow and Thursday for me this week

Trickedbyadoughnut · 01/05/2023 12:45

Hello @florenceandthemac, glad your first day went well! All being well, I'll be doing Thursday too.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 02/05/2023 09:43

Quiet on here 😅Anyway, I had a good FD yesterday (having drinks and food prepped always helps) and have gone down 2.1 kg on the scales this morning - so still 1 kg heavier than pre-holiday but relieved there was a lot of water retention!

Good luck to any fasters today

florenceandthemac · 02/05/2023 14:45

Well done @Trickedbyadoughnut
I'm fasting today. Have done an upper body workout on my lunch, and am now putting off eating with another coffee. What makes today harder is... we have this 'lunch club' some Tuesdays at work where somebody makes a meal and brings it in to share. Today was my turn, so the meal I've prepped is currently smelling delicious in the slow cooker, and everyone is coming through to tell me how nice it is 😭But all I have had today is coffee so far 💪

EatYourFive · 02/05/2023 16:00

Hello
I am also fasting today, B2B is needed after a very gluttonous weekend!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 02/05/2023 17:42

Oh @florenceandthemac that's hardcore fasting! I hope you survived the delicious smells 😆

Hope it's going well @EatYourFive.

EatYourFive · 03/05/2023 07:33

Hello how did you get on yesterday @florenceandthemac? I finished at just under 600, happy with that as can have 700 today on my 2nd fast.
Anyone else fasting today?

florenceandthemac · 03/05/2023 07:51

@EatYourFive It went well, I think, thanks. I had a protein muffin (150 ish cals), a bowl of pulled pork chilli (with no rice, just the meat, peppers, kidney beans etc) and then a small bag of sweet and salted popcorn last night. I did a weights workout at lunch then a 9k fast walk last night, so I feel I was in my calorie range even though I'm not sure how many calories were in the chilli. It was homemade so I know it wasn't full of crap. I'll fast again on Thursday.
Good luck today! I'm not sure I'm at a point I could do B2B yet!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 03/05/2023 08:54

That sounds like a lovely FD, well done @florenceandthemac !

I'm on a FD today @EatYourFive. Didn't have time to do my food to bring into the office, but they have takeaway meals to heat up with the calories on, so I'll grab one of those around 4/5 p.m.

florenceandthemac · 03/05/2023 09:12

Good luck @Trickedbyadoughnut

EatYourFive · 03/05/2023 10:22

Excellent fasting yesterday @florenceandthemac! I often have something similar for dinner on fast days, I think as soon as you leave out the carbs something like chilli makes a very good FD meal, especially as it's filling as well. I have even resorted to spag bol without spag on FDs in the past but think chilli is more appetising!!
Good luck today @Trickedbyadoughnut! I aim to get through the day with just coffee and fruit and have a gousto meal lined up for dinner.

florenceandthemac · 03/05/2023 12:58

Thanks @EatYourFive 😊The chilli was so enjoyable and filling. I'll definitely have something similar on my next FD (which is tomorrow 😑)

EatYourFive · 03/05/2023 18:15

Kitchen closed at 650 here for FD2. How did you get on today @Trickedbyadoughnut?

Trickedbyadoughnut · 03/05/2023 19:42

Well done @EatYourFive! Closed on 813 here (I aim for 800 on a B2B) with a nice salmon, pea and potato dish from work. Going to do a bit of yoga and get an early night!

florenceandthemac · 04/05/2023 10:00

So, I forgot I was fasting today! I'd put tonight's tea in the slow cooker this morning, bought some 'healthy ish' treats for at work today and brought in my breakfast, for me to walk in the office and my boss remind me that I said I was fasting today! Ha.
So, I can still have that tea tonight, a smaller than planned portion, but it's sooooooo long off being able to eat! I'm so hungry now

SydneyCarton · 04/05/2023 12:26

Tesco do a 3 bean chilli soup which is briliant for FDs - the whole tub is only 260 calories so you can have some toast to dip as well, plus the chilli heat makes me drink more water so I feel fuller quicker.

I tried a FD yesterday but it all collapsed when I got home - I had a mint imperial as a quick sugar boost but it turned out to be a gateway drug to buttered toast and biscuits Blush. Still, I estimate the day's total at around 1200 calories and burned around 2200, so could have been worse.

DreamingLoo · 04/05/2023 13:10

I have discovered shakes for fast days. I daresay they're not very sound nutritionally but they keep me more full than anything else and make the FDs much easier. Lost half a stone in 2 weeks now which is good for me as I don't tend to drop weight fast.

florenceandthemac · 04/05/2023 13:36

Thanks for the three bean chilli tip @SydneyCarton , I'll take a look.

I am hungry, or rather I thought I was, but I've had a drink and feel better, ha. I've just done a really intense upper body workout on my lunch, and I'm going to run tonight (which distracts me from eating for an hour or so). I'll have my small portion of tea afterwards and hopefully get in bed early so I eat nothing else!!

Half a stone is amazing @DreamingLoo, that's all I really want to lose but it will never happen in two weeks. Well done. I don't like shakes though unfortunately

Trickedbyadoughnut · 05/05/2023 14:26

Wow @DreamingLoo that's nice to get off to a good start like that!

@florenceandthemac hope you FD ended well

I was going to do the second day of a B2B yesterday but unusually got up feeling like I needed to eat - not wanted to/felt hungry, but like my energy wasn't great, lacking nutrients or something. That has happened only a handful of times, so I decided to roll with it and ate lots of fruit and veg and protein yesterday.

So I'm fasting today instead (I hate a Friday fast usually) - will be having homemade veggie burgers and baked sweet potato so it will feel like a nice weekend tea. Been riding and swam 1k in the lake so I've just had a bovril to stave off the hunger, but tea will be at 5 p.m. on the dot I think!

florenceandthemac · 05/05/2023 14:34

Thanks @Trickedbyadoughnut I probably finished on around 700 really (wasn't fully sure how many cals were in my tea). I would have liked 500, but I did a half hour (tough) upper body weights session, and then a 7k run in the evening which was actually the hardest run of my life. I felt like I was running through treacle. So through exercise I burned 690 cals, so I guess 700 cals consumed isn't so bad.

I don't mind a Friday fast as long as we have no evening plans! But my aim is to do either Monday or Tuesday and Thursday. Lots of Friday plans coming up over the next two months. Enjoy your tea

Trickedbyadoughnut · 05/05/2023 15:16

That's sounds like a decent result - since Dr. Moseley did that interview (in Telegraph, I think) saying that people could do 800 calories per day instead of 500 and not really have a negative effect on weight loss, I aim for under 800 on B2B days or if I'm doing a particular high amount of exercise.

florenceandthemac · 05/05/2023 16:40

How much exercise/what kind of exercise does everybody here do?

DreamingLoo · 05/05/2023 17:09

florenceandthemac · 05/05/2023 16:40

How much exercise/what kind of exercise does everybody here do?

Bugger all targeted exercise. I don't drive so I walk everywhere though. But when I've properly exercised in the past I've found it's hampered my weight loss because I get starving.

florenceandthemac · 08/05/2023 06:28

How's everyone's weekends been? Anyone fasting tomorrow?
