Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Just enjoy @SydneyCarton

harriethoyle · 24/10/2023 13:54

I'm just suffering with a severe lack of motivation @floranginajelly and craving comfort from things like hot buttered toast and chocolate... 😆Managed to swerve the toaster this morning and have got through to lunch so I should make it to tea now and then it's just a hop, skip and a jump to bed and legitimate breakfast tomorrow!!

@SydneyCarton don't you dare get on the scales - just enjoy yourself and get back to FD when you get home. I'll be doing exactly that from Friday!

Kitchen closing on 661, giving 1410 for the b2b. Happy enough after contemplating giving up this morning!

Well done @harriethoyle

floranginajelly · 25/10/2023 09:23

Had the most amazing NSV yesterday when I discovered I can fit into evening gowns I wore 20 years ago and had consigned to the back of my wardrobe
No need to buy a new outfit for an upcoming event and not terrified of the photos (well, not as terrified as I might be, I'm still 20 years older 😆)

harriethoyle · 25/10/2023 09:47

Fabulous @floranginajelly that's a great NSV. and bonus new clothes without the spend!

OP posts:
floranginajelly · 25/10/2023 10:38

The no spends is definitely a good thing

floranginajelly · 26/10/2023 12:11

Eating today
I really need to practice eating well
And not scoffing everything in sight

Ok so far

harriethoyle · 26/10/2023 15:15

I struggle with that @floranginajelly particularly on the day after a b2b - I was like the very hungry caterpillar yesterday!

mumlikeaboss · 26/10/2023 22:36

Haven't managed a single down day this week, half term is my excuse 🙄 Plus it's coooooooold and dark and I'm with everyone wanting to eat all the comfort foods!!!

Bit fed up because I dropped 3 or 4lb from my last plateau but now have stuck fast AGAIN... This is getting tedious!!! Will take me until 2030 to lose the weight at this rate 🤣

Badlifeday · 26/10/2023 23:29

The weather doesn't help! I've managed to fast today but am planning to have the next two days off. Already thinking about my breakfast tomorrow...

floranginajelly · 27/10/2023 05:09

Some times (holidays etc) make it more difficult for me too
Soup is my saviour in the cold weather

mumlikeaboss · 28/10/2023 11:21

Soup is such a good idea @floranginajelly thank you. Must make some to warm my bones next week!

Well done for your Thursday fast @Badlifeday 🙌🏼

I finally managed a down day yesterday and that's produced a (temporary) dip into the next 10's bracket 🥳 let's hope we can make it stick 🤞🏻

mumlikeaboss · 01/11/2023 19:53

Monday's FD went south 🙄 so looks like I'm doing today and Friday this week...

Have had a good down day today but I'm STARVING all of a sudden and I do not want to eat anything else or I'll open the floodgates!!! 😱

SydneyCarton · 02/11/2023 11:34

First FD for a while yesterday - went straight from the office to children's activities so not back home until 7.30 which helped. It was more of a mini than a proper FD, and probably came in around 800 cals, but I'm happy with that as a reintroduction to 5:2

Echobelly · 02/11/2023 14:44

About two months in now on FD today...not weighing myself until end of the month though, not sure what I'm doing after that. if I've managed something like half a stone since starting I'll see if I can lose the last quarter by going on another month, as that would take me back to 9 stone.

Luckily I don't celebrate Christmas - probably will overindulge a bit some days during holidays but not as much as people doing Christmas.

mumlikeaboss · 03/11/2023 21:11

Well done @SydneyCarton 👍🏻

I was meant to be doing a FD today and jolly forgot didn't I 🤦🏼‍♀️

@Echobelly we don't really celebrate Christmas but it's still a bit of a treacherous time of year with holidays (more time to eat and socialise) and so much delicious food around 🙈🙈

harriethoyle · 06/11/2023 10:27

Morning all! I'm back from half term holidays 3.5kgs heavier... but all the food was sooooo good! Worth every ounce 😂FD today, tomorrow and Thursday I think. It's grim and cold and rainy here, absolutely not what the doctor ordered.

Glad you had a good time @harriethoyle, shame about the weather. It’s nice and sunny here (London) after a week of rain and general misery. Looking to do a b2b tomorrow and Wednesday, although apparently the heating in the office has broken so that’ll be a challenge 😬

harriethoyle · 06/11/2023 20:24

It's wall to wall rain up north @SydneyCarton - same all week apparently 🤣🙈

Today has been HARD. 585 for the day. Nfd tomorrow then b2b Wednesday and Thursday as DH is away and I find that much easier...

Hi there, newbie here. I've just started 16:8. I know this is a 5:2 thread but hopefully you'll be able to help. I'm struggling with mornings! I have a medical condition and quite often wake up feeling a bit nauseous and headachey so I have to take some painkillers. I can take them on an empty stomach I then end up feeling even more nauseous and acidic. I've also really gone off black coffee and tea 🤢

Any suggestions as to what might work? I don't want to stop as IF is the only thing that's helping me lose weight which has been a struggle for so many years, but I really need to nail mornings!

floranginajelly · 07/11/2023 07:27

I'm still employing the 20:4 (loosely) approach during the week with a free eating weekend
It's working well for maintenance but I don't seem
To be losing any more weight
I think I need to step it up, have a more 5:2 plan and/ or have more restraint at weekends

Hello
Welcome
Sorry about your health issues. My friend uses a 16:8 - 20:4 approach and eats a low ish carb breakfast then skips dinner and/ or lunch and this has been really effective
Just 3 days a week
