Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Well @Echobelly I guess another way of thinking of it is if it comes off slowly and steadily, it's more likely to stay off - and 1/2lb a week is 25lb in a year which is almost 2 stone!

Tbf, I was expecting it to be slow. I've only ever done it for 12 weeks at a time before max, and lost slot 1/2 stone when I did 12 weeks. I'm not sure how long I want to keep it up, I do know people who do it full time but not sure it's for me, but in many ways I do prefer it to doing 1200 cals every day like I did got 3 months last summer. I found that so restrictive for days out etc because I hate to break the rules.

I'm about to go on holiday so am going to give myself a few days off, I think - will manage today and then probably Sunday and that's it for a week.

@Echobelly that's what I like so much about fasting is it's so much more flexible than constant low-calorie dieting. And if you can fit it round days out / holidays etc. then what's to stop you doing it long-term?

I'm on a down day today but not sure if it might not switch to an ordinary day 🙈🙈 have been sleeping really badly and I'm SO TIRED 😴😴

Had a good week and had lost another lb when I weighed yesterday.
Weekends are my downfall as I do like to go out and have a drink or two…
I’m going to try and do 3 FD’s next week.

FD for me today but I keep forgetting. I'm well within the 500 cals so going to have an early night and aim for a b2b tomorrow - hoping I'm better at remembering tomorrow!

Going to a friend's 60th birthday on the weekend and tried on the only dress I thought might fit last night. It's a bit snug so hoping another 2 FDs before Saturday will take away some of the bloating and the dress will fit better.

So I did a fast day on weekend for first time today, as it was the only other day I could do it this week (back from holiday on Monday and then a quite social week) and... it's actually been really good. But maybe just because I didn't have any other plans. I might try eating breakfast later on weekdays as I think it did help to do that and I'm not especially famished in the morning. So may do weekends more often, but it's only going to work if I have minimal plans.

Next week is also a bit tricky; can definitely do Tuesday, best other day may be Friday but I think there's a fairly high chance of dinner invite.

Too scared to weigh myself after a week of no fasting. Back on the wagon today. I think I'm going to try stricter fasts in the week (basically by starting them earlier in the evening to reduce my overeating window!) and having two days off at the weekend. Will see how it goes.
Anyone else finding the weather is not conducive to our fasting? 😀

Signing in to say absolutely no fasting going on here on holiday 🤣. We did have a couple of days half board at one hotel where we skipped lunch and a couple of days staying with family where we ate more sparingly but apart from that I’ve been enjoying my first all inclusive break for over twenty years 😀.

That said I think the majority of the food we’ve had has been good quality, freshly prepared and minimally processed. At one hotel the chefs came down to the beach to buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen for that night’s dinner and even the calorific stuff like desserts and bread is all (I think) made from scratch. Plus I’ve been in the pool two or three times a day so working some of it off!

@Badlifeday all I want to do is eat stew and dumplings! This is not good weather for fasting 🙈 my lunch sandwich is not looking appealing!

Definitely like the OMAD schedule but I don't do it at the weekends which is why I try for a longer fast from Monday to Tuesday

@harriethoyle and @floranginajelly Two of the three hotels we’ve stayed in have had scales in the bathroom! I haven’t dared look! On the plus side my nice tan is going to give me an incentive to go running when we get back, assuming it’s still warm enough for shorts 🤔
