Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I forgot to sign in this morning but completed a down day successfully today 👍🏻

And so far the 3lb has stayed off!! 😯 Long may it last.

So that's a stone down since the beginning of the summer holidays (and only another four to go... Five in my wildest dreams!! 🙈🤣)

Alargeoneplease · 04/10/2023 04:39

Sounds like you’re all doing amazingly well…
Second FD of the week for me today. Think I’ll do tomorrow too 🤪
Just about to get up and go for a run before work.
Have a great day all x

harriethoyle · 04/10/2023 10:38

Fabulous @mumlikeaboss!

@Alargeoneplease I hope you don't live in the UK because if you are getting up at 4.39am BST to go for a run you are SERIOUSLY dedicated and putting me to shame! 😂

OP posts:
Alargeoneplease · 04/10/2023 16:55

🤣🤣 I do actually live in the UK… am just used to getting up at that time to get a run in. I’d never go if I had to go after work!

harriethoyle · 04/10/2023 18:15

I'm both impressed and a bit intimidated @Alargeoneplease if I'm awake at 5am I'm either going on holiday or going through an insomniac stage!

Morning!! Anyone with me today? 3rd FD of the week - tomorrow is my last Friday at this job location so there's a cake bake off taking place. May just eat cake for lunch and skip the sandwiches..!!

Epic fasting fail today as I tear open a
Tunnocks teacake
Ah well, back on it Monday

harriethoyle · 05/10/2023 19:23

Worth the fail though @floranginajelly! They're delicious...

I'm just waiting for tea to finish cooking. Going to finish on c.650 which I'll take!

Signing in for a Friday Fast 😴 Busy day so won't get a chance to eat until 4/5pm...

Really hoping for 1.5lb off tomorrow morning (or more!) to get me into the next stone bracket 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Cake bake off sounds delicious @harriethoyle 😍 enjoy some for me!!!

@Alargeoneplease suitably impressed by your early starts and your running 😳 I'm no good at either 🤣

harriethoyle · 06/10/2023 08:24

Thanks @mumlikeaboss ! Am 0.3kg under target this morning but I fear that's going to last all of 2 hours 🤣

Hi everyone,
I'm back again. Aiming for today to be a sensible eating day and tomorrow will be my first FD. I've got so much to lose but going to break it down into 1/2 stone targets.
Can anyone inspire me with their FD menus please?

harriethoyle · 09/10/2023 15:37

Hi @Bottl 👋

New lunch for me is a pack of flavoured cous cous with peas, feta and hummus. It's c. 350 calories and I find it really filling. I was getting bored with my usual tuna thin!

I'm FD today, Weds and Thurs so I might see you later in the week. Good luck tomorrow!

Struggling
Working from home

Bottl · 10/10/2023 18:11

Harriet - are they the sachet thingies you just add water to? Sounds like a good idea.

@floranginajelly how did your day go?

I haven't been as strict as I should have - mostly because I keep forgetting I'm meant to be fasting Hmm. However, I now feel very hungry, tired and freezing so on that basis, I'm on the right track Grin

I hadn't really thought beyond today, just needed to make a start and now wondering if attempting a b2b tomorrow would be a sensible idea or not.

mumlikeaboss · 10/10/2023 19:02

@floranginajelly did you manage to hang on in there? 🤞🏻

@Bottl not long to go now! Well done for diving back into it. Do you tend to spread your 500 calories out during the day, and if so would you find it easier to save them up for one big meal or 2 small meals (no snacks)?

Being freezing and starving sounds miserable!! But if you haven't fasted for a while your body's probably forgotten how to be fat-adapted. Hopefully you get back into the swing of it soon so it's a bit easier 🤞🏻

I had a super short, early eating window today so should get a 24-hour fast in before lunch tomorrow... Thursday I'm meeting up with a friend and all bets are off 🤭🤭 and then Friday will be my second down day. Need to make it a good one... I keep bobbing around the 18 stone mark and want to get below it and STAY below!

harriethoyle · 10/10/2023 19:07

Yes @Bottl they are the sachets. so much easier in terms of flavours etc than making it all from scratch...

I'm FD tomorrow if anyone fancies joining me!

Bottl · 10/10/2023 22:17

@mumlikeaboss thanks for your message. Previously, I'd have a tin of soup (150kcal) as lateinto the day as I could manage (around 1 or 2pm) and then 350 kcal meal in the evening. 2.30-5.30 is the danger zone for me. Lots of temptation thrown my way and too many opportunists for me to forget and chuck something into my mouth without thinking!!
Interesting you say about feeling cold and hungry a miserable thought - it kinda motivates me but this is probably my extremely distorted relationship with food/weight loss.

@harriethoyle I'm off to the supermarket tomorrow evening so will see what my local has to offer. I did pick up a few packs of gourmet-something-or-other grains a while ago when they were on offer and they were really nice and pretty low cal but had the texture of rice. Ds was not keen and at full price were a little over budget but I suppose if it was suitable for a FD, I could stretch the budget a little.
I think I will join you tomorrow and then maybe again one day of the weekend.

harriethoyle · 11/10/2023 08:32

@Bottl if you've a lidl or aldi near you, I think the sachets are less than a quid each and make enough for two good lunches.

Signing in. I've a MISERABLE cold! On the cold and flu capsules...

OP posts:
Bottl · 11/10/2023 09:32

Excellent, I'll have a look for some.

Oh dear, hope you feel better soon!

I've managed to avoid having breakfast this morning which is a good sign that today will be successful

harriethoyle · 11/10/2023 19:00

Today has been tough - felt ill with hunger just before lunch 😬 so I've slacked off slightly from a true b2b day and am finishing on c.750 cals. I'll just take tomorrow as it comes. I don't think the filthy cold is helping!

OP posts:
Bottl · 11/10/2023 19:04

How are you feeling this evening @harriethoyle ?

I had a look at the couscous packets and have picked one to have a try.

I've had a mixed day today and just debating whether to have some soup tonight or close the kitchen now after having a bit of a blip with the kids after school snacks earlier Blush

Bottl · 11/10/2023 19:05

X-post!! Yeah, probably best to just concentrate on feeling well again for now.

Bottl · 11/10/2023 19:05

BTW, has anyone heard from BigChoc lately?

harriethoyle · 12/10/2023 09:36

No @Bottl she hasn't popped up on these threads for ages which is a huge shame. She was ace...

Am having usual tuna thin for lunch and scrambled eggs for tea. Should come in around 800 cals I think which I can cope with when feeling rotten!

So weighed myself after 5 weeks of this, only a little under 3lbs down, which is a bit disappointing as suggests less than half a lb per week. It might be because I haven't been able thus far to up exercise (maybe I should join office gym to give me another day) or maybe just being middle aged!
