Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Started my first run of 5:2 in a bit today.... I wanted to start a 1200 cal a day diet when I got back from holidays, but then realised between Jewish High Holy Days (= family get togethers) and two other bits of travel, a low cal diet would be interrupted a lot for the next 5 weeks, so I've decided to 5:2 until all that is over to at least kick-start things. Maybe I'll just stick to 5:2 if it's achieved anything after that time, although I know it's not very long. I have to say, I found it easier than I remembered, but this is the 3rd time I've done it I think.

Today I've had fat free greek yoghurt and a peach (with a teaspoon of truvia sweetner) for breakfast, mid morning apple, boiled egg at lunchtime, packet pop chips and then a baked tomato and egg dish for dinner - adds up to 500 cals give or take. I find Breakfast, 3 snacks, Dinner works best for me as I need little and often. Will do similar on Thursday, only with miso and veg for dinner.

I'm currently 9 stone 9, aiming to get to 8 stone 6. I don't like weighing myself often as I prefer to wait and see clearer results, so I'll probably not even look until after the first 5 weeks.

Day one of a b2b and so far only water and tea 🤨. Thinking of pushing on and doing a 24 hour fast (I know it’s not technically zero calories because of the milk in the tea ), then doing a low calorie day tomorrow for a total of 1350 over the two days.

SydneyCarton · 14/09/2023 06:38

I did end up doing a complete fast on Tuesday and then on Wednesday didn’t eat until the afternoon (half a Twirl 🤣) then had a large sushi dinner. Total was about 1100 calories over both days and I’m a pound down this morning.

harriethoyle · 14/09/2023 07:43

Fabulous @SydneyCarton !!

Anyone fasting with me today? Aiming for c.650 I think.

Well done @SydneyCarton and @Echobelly !

Yes @harriethoyle , am with you today. I’ve just had a trip away in York with my daughter, to celebrate her submitting her MSc dissertation. We had a fabulous time, but sausage sarnies, Prosecco and ice-cream were consumed (not all together 🤣🤣). On the plus side, we did a great deal of walking. Weighed myself in trepidation this morning, but thankfully no gain. I’m now starting my “pretox” before my holiday: no booze for a couple of weeks, and a high-protein diet with some FDs. I’m aiming for max 800 today, and hopefully a bit less.

Echobelly · 14/09/2023 09:54

@harriethoyle - me too. I'm in the office today, have had yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, snack plan same as before, making a udon style broth tonight without the noodles bit with an egg and lots of veg.

harriethoyle · 14/09/2023 10:17

I'm already starving @Echobelly @TeaRose29 😂I haven't yet got on the scales since we got back from our long weekend away. FAR too much damage was caused!!

TeaRose29 · 14/09/2023 10:25

@harriethoyle 😂 💪💪

mumlikeaboss · 14/09/2023 21:53

I did a mini yesterday and have tentatively stepped off my plateau... But totally over-carbed today so I expect I'll be back up in the morning 🙈🙈

Anyway, a proper down day planned for tomorrow with just one meal - lasagne and salad 🤤 - and we'll see where we're at after that.

Just need 2 1/2 more lbs off and I'll be in the next stone bracket! 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Hope everyone survived their FD today ❤️❤️

harriethoyle · 14/09/2023 22:13

Late check in... kitchen closing on 673.

Well done @mumlikeaboss !

Well done @harriethoyle and @mumlikeaboss !

I ended up on around 1100 yesterday (having gardened for hours), but still weighed in 2 pounds down this morning, so really chuffed! Will be playing quite an energetic game of tennis this afternoon, so aiming for around 1200 today. Four pounds to go to get to my goal weight.

harriethoyle · 18/09/2023 08:13

Eeek - scales terrifying this morning after DH birthday weekend and hangover from mini break last weekend! Need to get back on the wagon asap...

3 FD planned, today, tomorrow and Thursday. Who's with me?!

OP posts:
mumlikeaboss · 18/09/2023 20:15

I'm with you tomorrow and Thursday @harriethoyle

Still plateauing... and bl**dy TOTM bloat & cravings are already heading my way so it's only going to get worse not better!!!

harriethoyle · 19/09/2023 08:55

Morning @mumlikeaboss just checking in - feeling motivated by an overnight whoosh, may it be replicated for both of us tomorrow morning!

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 19/09/2023 10:35

💪💪 @harriethoyle and @mumlikeaboss ! I’m currently a pound below my plateau, but not sure it will stick. Just low carbing today, as playing tennis later, then it’s bridge night so wine will be consumed Blush. FD again on Wednedsay.

Badlifeday · 19/09/2023 11:30

Morning all, fasting today and Thursday, which means I can go out for dinner on Friday night with a clean conscience!

mumlikeaboss · 19/09/2023 12:34

Lucky you @harriethoyle I was 2lb up 🙈🙈 too much pasta last night 😁

Doing good today though, only black coffee so far 👍🏻

mumlikeaboss · 19/09/2023 12:39

How's it going @Badlifeday @TeaRose29

Badlifeday · 19/09/2023 14:11

Hi, @mumlikeaboss I'm still doing well on my fast days and overeating on my up days! Weight creeping down slowly though.
Does anyone think the colder weather will make it harder to fast? I appreciate my hearty food when it's cold! (Though I managed last winter I suppose)

harriethoyle · 19/09/2023 14:14

Ah but I fasted yesterday too @mumlikeaboss - had I been free eating I would have been right up!

Yes @Badlifeday I find winter fasting so much harder. I want comforting hot food in winter, big cups of hot chocolate, a lot of sugar to cope with the darkness, and rib sticking meals like stew and dumplings. Howl! I am going to try and compromise by getting the slow cooker out and doing things like chilli etc so at least I get a bowl of something hearty even if I have to skip the carbs...

OP posts:
mumlikeaboss · 19/09/2023 14:29

Yeah it's hard to fast when you're cold as well as hungry!!!

But the worst thing for me is being stuck at home and being bored!!! If I'm on the go all day or super busy, it's so much easier.

harriethoyle · 19/09/2023 14:42

Yep @mumlikeaboss I agree - WFH fast days are nigh on impossible compared to busy working days.

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 19/09/2023 14:48

I'm fasting today and tomorrow - office days! Last week I was very busy out of the house both evenings with swimming lessons etc so it was easy not to snack, but I think swimming will be off today as DD2 has come home from school ill, so more time at home 😬. Might try to replicate last week's total fast on Tuesday and low cal day Wednesday and see what happens

Alargeoneplease · 19/09/2023 17:39

Evening ladies, sorry I’ve been awol, been so crazy at work!
struggled a bit last week as felt so hungry but I’ve been back on track.
FD today. I don’t actually feel too hungry and my trouser’s definitely feel looser today 😊

harriethoyle · 19/09/2023 18:48

Welcome back @Alargeoneplease . I've been famished today 🤣🙈 already thinking about tomorrow's breakfast. Currently on 585 but have saved enough for a bit of toast later on which I think is almost inevitable 🤣

Hope you're doing OK @SydneyCarton @mumlikeaboss @Badlifeday 💪
