Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I think it’s the change in weather. Salads just don’t cut it 🤦🏻‍♀️
I’ve just had chicken skewers and veg and feel quite satisfied.
Think I’ll batch cook some soup as a nice warming lunch.

SydneyCarton · 19/09/2023 18:57

Aargh it all fell apart when I got home and there was a big bag of M&Ms open on the kitchen counter Blush. From then on it was toast, some cheese, a biscuit and we’ve just had sausage rolls, garlic bread and salad for dinner. According to MFP it’s about 1100 calories so not horrific but not really how I planned it.

SydneyCarton · 19/09/2023 18:58

Sounds like @harriethoyle and @Alargeoneplease have done much better than me!

mumlikeaboss · 19/09/2023 21:36

Ohh shame @SydneyCarton some days just go like that eh... A few of mine have done the same recently 😏😁

I'm through with today 🙌🏼 and luxuriating in a much-deserved hot bath. Had my 30-minute eating window mid-afternoon so I'll get a nice long fast if I don't eat til lunch tomorrow.

Scales better be down in the morning, is all I can say.

Onehappymam · 20/09/2023 07:36

Haven’t done a proper FD in ages.

Hopefully I can get a couple on the bag score the weekend!

Today is the day.

harriethoyle · 20/09/2023 07:59

Were the scales kind @mumlikeaboss? My bloat is off so hopefully a bit more off tomorrow. I've really hurt my back though lugging heavy bags around in the storm this morning 😭 (don't ask!) so I'm feeling very sorry for myself 🙈

OP posts:
mumlikeaboss · 20/09/2023 08:34

@harriethoyle oh no, be careful of yourself! Bad backs are the worst 🤬

1.5lb down this morning... Bit fed up that it's not more as I was holding onto 4lb of bloat above my new low... so I've still got 2.5lb of that and I can feel it!!!

Bleurgh. Cold, grey, grumpy day today. Can feel myself leaning towards comfort foods...!!!

Good luck today @Onehappymam !@Onehappymam

Onehappymam · 20/09/2023 14:38

Hope you recover soon @harriethoyle.

Well done for that SV @mumlikeaboss. Hopefully the remaining pounds shift soon.

So far, so good with this FD. Black coffee, water and a can of Coke Zero to get me through lunchtime. I’m busy this evening to-ing and from-ing from after school clubs x 3, so that will help take my mind off the hunger pangs!

SydneyCarton · 20/09/2023 15:20

Change of plans for me and I'm WFH today, so did 16:8 rather than a full FD and fasted from 8pm yesterday to 12pm today. Probably won't be back in the office this week, and I want to go for a run tomorrow which will need breakfast energy, but will try another 16:8 Thursday to Friday.

harriethoyle · 21/09/2023 07:59

I'm wfh today so FD is going to be hard! But am going to give it a go... anyone with me?

@SydneyCarton just saw your m and m post. I fell into a bag of Peanut ones yesterday. They're just irresistible!

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 21/09/2023 10:54

@harriethoyle DP sometimes buys 1kg bags from Amazon if they're on offer and I keep grabbing handfuls from the open bag as I go past, but in my head I don't like them and would never buy them for myself Hmm

Onehappymam · 21/09/2023 14:06

The chewy caramel M & Ms are AMAZING. Thankfully no one sells them near me though!

I’m the opposite @harriethoyle. When I’m at home I find FDs so much easier!

Office days are harder as everyone has their coffee & lunch together, so I feel like I’m missing out.

Yeaterday’s FD was a success! Following it with a mini FD today.

mumlikeaboss · 21/09/2023 17:37

How's it gone today, @harriethoyle ?

I've been frantically busy and out of the house all day so fasting has been a breeze... Buckets of black coffee and water, and a nice small meal in my 30-minute window 👌🏻

Stayed the same this morning after an up day yesterday, so fingers crossed I'll be down a bit tomorrow 🤞🏻

harriethoyle · 21/09/2023 18:58

OK thanks @mumlikeaboss - kitchen closed on 585 and not feeling starving! So I'll take that... sounds like you've bossed today!

How did you get on @Onehappymam ?

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 22/09/2023 07:53

Back at goal this morning. Hurrah! Shouldn't be an outrageous weekend either so hopefully can build on this next week to carve out a couple of kilos of wiggle room...

OP posts:
mumlikeaboss · 22/09/2023 14:34

Amazing @harriethoyle ! 🤩

Still a long way from goal here 😁 but another lb down this morning... Got a fancy meal out tonight though, so it won't stick 🙈

Really must try and get 3 FDs in next week because I'm only just breaking even at the moment and I want to get the next half a stone off.

Alargeoneplease · 22/09/2023 17:39

I’ve had a good day on plan this week with two successful FD’s. Lost 2 lbs this morning taking me to 9st 13lbs… not weighed that for a couple of years. Even more determined to have another good week next week!

harriethoyle · 22/09/2023 18:34

Fantastic @Alargeoneplease !!

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 24/09/2023 18:48

That’s great @Alargeoneplease! That’s what I’d like to get down to and hopefully maintain. I’ve tested positive for Covid which has rather put the mockers on eating as my sense of taste has gone odd so hoping for a loss or at least no gain to offset the pain in the arse of missing a night out with friends and being stuck at home ☹️

harriethoyle · 25/09/2023 08:13

Morning all - anyone with me today? I'm on a 3FD week. Bit of weekend bloat to get off then I'd like to get a bit lower than target... 🤞

Hope you're feeling OK @SydneyCarton - Mr Hoyle got covid a few weeks ago and, after a grim first couple of days, recovered far more quickly than his first bout.

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 25/09/2023 10:19

@harriethoyle I feel fine, thank you. The only reason I suspected it might be anything other than a mild cold or 24 hour bug was the loss of taste which was different from anything I'd experienced before even with a blocked nose. I tested because I had a night out with friends planned and didn't want to risk infecting anyone, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bothered and been none the wiser - never had Covid before!

mumlikeaboss · 25/09/2023 20:02

Oh wow, hope you don't get any more poorly @SydneyCarton

@harriethoyle I didn't check in earlier but was with you today 👍🏻 had a super early window so I'm aiming for a 24-hour before breaking my fast tomorrow...

Scales have crept up a little over the weekend so they better be kind to me tomorrow!! 🤞🏻

I need to do a 3FD week as well but I now have a friend coming to stay from tomorrow to the weekend 🙈 so I know how that's going to work out!! 😂

harriethoyle · 25/09/2023 20:55

No point even trying for 3 FDs in that situation @mumlikeaboss 🤣🙈 just enjoy yourself and start again next week!

Kitchen closing on 630. B2B tomorrow to get it out the way...

harriethoyle · 26/09/2023 08:59

Morning all! Signing in for day 2 - anyone with me?

OP posts:
floranginajelly · 26/09/2023 09:17

Hey
Anyone else have zero calories in their FDs?
I'm not great at keeping to <500 once I start.
