Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Good luck to you too @TeaRose29 and congratulations on the new arrival!

You can do it @harriethoyle ! Although I'm too finding it hard not to snack today 🙄

harriethoyle · 08/08/2023 19:46

Kitchen closed on 745 making 1330 for my b2b... Happy enough with that! @chillibear @TeaRose29 how did you both get on?

OP posts:
chillibear · 08/08/2023 20:55

Well done @harriethoyle , especially as yo thought it was going to be a struggle today!
I ended up doing a water fast today as wasn’t feeling well. I actually find it easier than sticking to 500 calories I think 🤔

harriethoyle · 09/08/2023 08:00

Hope you feel better this morning @chillibear - what's a water fast?

I'm back at target today, happy with that! Although taking dsd out for a pizza fest tonight so won't even last 24 hours 🤣🍕🍕🍕

OP posts:
chillibear · 09/08/2023 08:38

Literally just had water (and a couple of black coffees). I really suffer from digestive issues so find having a proper break from food (for 36/40hrs) really helpful in calming my tummy.

Well done on the target but make sure you enjoy your pizza. Remember you have to have some treats, this is a WOE not a faddy diet!

harriethoyle · 09/08/2023 10:00

No fear of that @chillibear - I already have planned what I want, a fully loaded calzone with lashings of garlic sauce to dip the crusts in!!

Epic fail for me yesterday. At long last we had a beautiful, hot dry day, so I cracked on with some much needed gardening. Didn’t eat lunch, but snacked on chocolate Blush. Then in the evening DH suggested that we went out to eat, and ended up having a burger and chips in a pub. Needless to say, the 1.5 pounds are back on this morning, and I am off my plateau but in the wrong direction! At least I am still clinging on to my new stone number!

Today I’m just going to focus on eating sensibly and getting my protein up and carbs down. Carbs stimulate my appetite so much that fasting is difficult the next day. So, if I can have a good day today – Greek yogurt, protein shake and tuna planned (not all together😬) I might be able to get back on track tomorrow.

Well done @harriethoyle , great willpower. Sorry to hear you were unwell, @chillibear , but I’m sure there will be an upside!

mumlikeaboss · 09/08/2023 19:43

Aw congrats @TeaRose29 😊

I did a Monday fast day which lost me another 1/2lb but somehow managed to gain 2lb of bloat yesterday 🙄🙄

Couldn't fit in a fast today and can't do Friday either, so I'm joining you for a Thursday one tomorrow @harriethoyle

mumlikeaboss · 09/08/2023 19:45

@chillibear I always used to do water fasts instead of having the 500 calories, too... If you're in the right mindset, it's definitely easier to just keep going than to try and eat a small amount and then stop!!

chillibear · 10/08/2023 08:08

@mumlikeaboss yes, I like grazing and find it hard to stop even when really full so think the all or nothing approach works best for me when in that mood.
Good luck on the fast today, I was going to fast but going out for lunch with the girls so will try tomorrow instead.

TeaRose29 · 10/08/2023 09:38

My protein day worked as a good reset yesterday, so I have lost half a pound of the 1.5 I gained. This is like groundhog days 🤨. Going for a mini today - I have a lot of gardening to do (if it doesn’t rain) so not trying for a proper FD. Anyone else fasting today?

harriethoyle · 10/08/2023 14:02

I am @TeaRose29 but likely to be a c.800 day rather than a proper FD, as we have chicken skewers and wraps to finish before we go away for the weekend. I'm WFH too which makes it waaaaay harder.

Epic fail. Food was fine but the sun came out and DH opener a bottle of pinot... 🙈

TeaRose29 · 11/08/2023 09:42

🤣🤣 @harriethoyle . Well, you have to make hay while the sun shines! Good day for me yesterday. Managed a mini without feeling too hungry, thanks to my protein shake, and burned lots of calories gardening. Another pound off this morning, so I am back on my plateau 😄. Going for a gardening/mini combo repeat today, as we are going out for a curry on Saturday, and I am NOT holding back! Anyone with me today?

chillibear · 11/08/2023 12:03

Hey @TeaRose29 I was meant to have a FD today after a girls day yesterday and dinner out tomorrow but now out for dinner tonight too 🤗
Will just try and be sensible instead. Enjoy the gardening!

TeaRose29 · 11/08/2023 22:06

Feast and famine is more doable than day-in-day out dieting though, isnt it, @chillibear . You can crack on again next week. I remember when I did Slimming World years ago, you couldn’t really go out for dinner without ruining your week…..

mumlikeaboss · 13/08/2023 18:03

@TeaRose29 oh 100%... And starving yourself all week to save up enough syns or points for a splurge at the weekend was just soul-destroying!!!

mumlikeaboss · 13/08/2023 18:05

PMT seems to have struck early and violently this week 😠 I'm hungry and grumpy and this morning had gained 4 of the 12lbs I'd lost!!!

The number on the scales annoyed me much more than I'm prepared to admit 🙈 so I've done an impromptu fast day today... So long as I don't eat anything else before bed, anyway.

harriethoyle · 13/08/2023 18:33

I've spent allll weekend eating, including a 7 course tasting menu with a 7 course wine flight. 🤣 actually DREADING getting on the scales tomorrow! 3 fds this week, M, Tu and Th...

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 13/08/2023 22:28

That would annoy me too, @mumlikeaboss , but it’s bound to be just water retention and period build-up, so don’t be too hard on yourself. @harriethoyle well that sounds fabulous and in my experience you only get small portions on tasting menus, so I’m sure it won’t be that bad!

Well I enjoyed my curry and inevitably was up 1.5 this morning! Had prawn balti and left most of the sauce as damage limitation. Hoping most of the increase was just the salt… 🤞. Anyway, I have been pretty good today, at around 1000 calories. Will be with you tomorrow, @harriethoyle ! 💪💪

DoodleMum12 · 14/08/2023 07:16

Can I join please? I’m a seasoned faster, been IFing since April 2021 and love this WOL and will never diet again. I don’t weigh myself due to a history of disordered daily weighing. I also don’t count calories as such (usually just eyeball the 500 meal if I have one) I have maintained my size for nearly 2 years and have been feeling fantastic but then we went on an AI holiday at end of June and since then I’ve been struggling. I feel bloated and can’t get a grip. The holiday was partly ruines by not having our luggage and I ended up bingeing and emotional eating and haven’t really recovered since. Also drinking too much!!

I attempted to ease myself back into my 20/4 fasting last week before starting ADF again but this didn’t work so am going to try 5:2/4:3 this week starting from today. I know I can do it and how amazing I feel, especially after a full fasting day.

Anyway, hope you’ll have me. 🤞

DoodleMum12 · 14/08/2023 07:19

*ruined 🙄

harriethoyle · 14/08/2023 08:51

Morning @TeaRose29 and welcome @DoodleMum12 - a couple of weeks of FD will quickly get you back on track!

Happy Monday. Let's do this!!

Morning Everyone and welcome @DoodleMum12 !
Your weekend sounds amazing @harriethoyle , I had a long weekend of eating too so on a FD today.
Holiday in 2 weeks so really don't wont to undo all the hard work before then!

Happy fasting!

DoodleMum12 · 14/08/2023 09:24

@chillibear @harriethoyle thanks for the warm welcome ☺️ I’m at work now with my black coffee and water. Planning a long walk this evening to take my mind off eating- hopefully it will stop raining!

It WILL be a good week!!
