Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Morning Everyone and welcome @DoodleMum12 ! Today has started well. I went to the gym and did a really good weights workout, and I’ve only had cups of tea and two Dairylea triangles so far, and I don’t feel like eating - I never do after exercise.

I’m on a bit of a mission now. It’s 6 weeks until we go on a cruise, and I would like to lose 6 pounds in that time, to get to my target weight and also allow a bit of wiggle room for the holiday. One pound a week is doable, but only if I am really consistent. 🤞🤞

Good luck for today, all fasters! 💪💪

harriethoyle · 14/08/2023 19:08

Kitchen closing on 581. How did you get on @TeaRose29 @DoodleMum12 @chillibear ?

DoodleMum12 · 14/08/2023 19:13

@harriethoyle well done!! kitchen closed at 0 😊 sat here with a water and relaxing after a 3 mile walk. I picked some blackberries whilst out and was so hard not to eat them as I went! Will enjoy some in a fruit salad tomorrow. I am
looking forward to the post fast day energy tomorrow morning- it always make it so worth it for me ….plus the 2 big meals of course 😋

DoodleMum12 · 14/08/2023 19:23

@TeaRose29 its totally doable! I’d love to do weights but not overly keen on joining a gym. I have a small set at home so probably should start with that

TeaRose29 · 14/08/2023 20:30

Well done @harriethoyle and @DoodleMum12 ! Kitchen closed on 770 and 429 exercise calories burnt (although I don’t eat back). Now enjoying a slimline tonic and feeling virtuous 😊

DoodleMum12 · 14/08/2023 21:17

I just walked downstairs so I can close all the rings on my Apple Watch 😅 @TeaRose29 a slimline tonic sounds refreshing. I just had a sparkling water this evening as trying to really cut back on my caffeine intake

harriethoyle · 15/08/2023 07:40

Morning all! Who's with me? I'm on a b2b, with c.700 cals to play with...

OP posts:
chillibear · 15/08/2023 08:59

Morning! Well done for yesterday @harriethoyle @TeaRose29 @DoodleMum12 I closed on 0 yesterday too although more black coffee than I'd like. Was especially proud of myself as I volunteered to pick up Maccy D's for a kids party and didn't even nick 1 chip!

Good luck for today @harriethoyle

TeaRose29 · 15/08/2023 09:47

Weighed in at 0.25 UP this morning 🤨but it’s probably due to having done a serious weights session yesterday (causes the body to hold on to water) so not bothered. Just being sensible today as it’s my bridge evening and we always have drinks and snacks Blush. Off to the Edinburgh fringe for the day tomorrow, so will be targeting Thursday as next FD. Good luck @harriethoyle and any other fasters today!

harriethoyle · 15/08/2023 09:56

I'll see you on Thursday @TeaRose29!!

OP posts:
mumlikeaboss · 15/08/2023 19:12

Well done yesterday's fasters 🙌🏼 and welcome @DoodleMum12 😊

I managed a FD on Sunday and lost 1.5lb of the 4 that I'd gained, but of course most of that was back on after an ordinary eating day yesterday 🙄🙄

Had another TDEE day today and hoping for a FD tomorrow if I can squeeze it in...

Then out for a day with friends on Thursday with lots of food planned 🤭🤭 and a final FD on Friday!! NOT going to let this gain stick around, or snowball into a bigger gain!!!

DoodleMum12 · 15/08/2023 21:52

I opened my window at 44 hours, a lot later than planned but got delayed leaving work and I don’t bring food with me (gone are the days of brining Tupperware boxes and processed snack bars) I ate WAY too many carbs today, daughter begged me to bake seeded bread and I just can’t leave it alone and I also had a jacket potato(more carbs) loaded with a whole tin of tuna. At least I had protein. There may have been a cookie or two as well 🙄Planning a 500 calorie day tomorrow. Closed all the rings on my watch again (one is 60 minutes of exercise)

Enjoy Edinburgh- one of my favourite cities, shame it’s 3 hours away by train! I really do need to visit again soon

@mumlikeaboss can I ask what TDEE is and is FD like a full fast day with no 500 cal meal? Sounds like too have a good plan 😀

mumlikeaboss · 15/08/2023 22:22

@DoodleMum12 44 hours is excellent! 👌🏻 The longest I've done (zero cal) is 48.

TDEE is Total Daily Energy Expenditure... So I just mean that I ate roughly the amount of calories that I would need to eat daily to maintain my weight.

TBH I rarely bother with calorie-counting as it just feels tedious and irritating and makes me want to rebel and eat junk 🤣 - but every now and then I tot up what I've had in a day to check that I'm intuitively eating about the right amount!

FD just means Fast Day; sometimes I do zero cal fast days or sometimes I do a "cheat's fast day" where I have just one mini meal in a really short window (30 minutes) but don't bother to count calories.

Been doing this for coming up 3 years now, and I'm still playing around with ways of fitting fasting around my life so it doesn't feel like a diet!

DoodleMum12 · 15/08/2023 22:27

@mumlikeaboss thanks for the clarification. I’ve been fasting just just over 2 years now and also don’t count calories and just eye ball it, also don’t weigh myself and just go by how I feel and how clothes fit me. I love the flexibility of IF. Did a month of ADF before holiday and felt fabulous so am hoping I can do it again but starting with 5:2/4:3 for now

DoodleMum12 · 15/08/2023 22:29

And I’ve just seen the first post on this thread with all the abbreviations 🤦‍♀️

mumlikeaboss · 15/08/2023 22:47

Fab isn't it. I think it's the only healthy lifestyle change I've ever made that I actually enjoy doing and want to carry on with!!

harriethoyle · 16/08/2023 08:16

All but half a kilo of the weekend's mega weight gain off after 2 fd - will do another tomorrow to consolidate! Got dsd staying thurs-sun this week so I'm going to volunteer to be designated driver for meals out etc to minimise wine consumption...

@harriethoyle that’s great! well done 👏

I just dropped my dog off at vets for a scale and polish and will be worried all day 😕 He hasn’t had general anaesthetic since he was 8 months old. He’s 7 now so have paid extra for health blood tests and an X-ray. Will be keeping extra busy and hopefully away from
food until tea time.

harriethoyle · 16/08/2023 12:21

@DoodleMum12 you might find that's a deep sedation rather than a general which is less onerous on them. I've had various teenaged DDogs undergo GA's over the years and they've always been fine. Paws crossed!

OP posts:
DoodleMum12 · 16/08/2023 22:09

@harriethoyle thanks. He’s back and all went ok. Just a bit drowsy and tired. No issues with his teeth and health so yay for that. Daily brushing after his gums
recover. he’s raw fed but unfortunately chewing on bones is not enough.

I ended up having a TDEE day so hopefully can manage a FD tomorrow 🤞

hope everyone had a good day

mumlikeaboss · 16/08/2023 23:44

I got a FD in today... Even resisted biscuits in my meeting this afternoon 😇and was so busy that I didn't have my mini meal until nearly 5pm.

Got a thumping headache this evening though, which has made it hard to resist turning to the snack cupboard for distraction!!!

chillibear · 17/08/2023 08:19

Well done for resisting @mumlikeaboss !
Are you fasting today @DoodleMum12
Think my planned meal is going to come in at just over 500. Need to be good today as out for all you can eat buffet tomorrow.

Anyone else joining?

TeaRose29 · 17/08/2023 10:40

Yes, I’m with you today, @chillibear . We had a great day in Edinburgh yesterday and walked 20,000 steps (which DH reckons was ALL uphill 😬). However, I had far more carbs than is usual for me, and I feel really bloated today. Hopefully a FD will sort me out!

Well done @harriethoyle and @mumlikeaboss on yesterday’s triumphs!

harriethoyle · 17/08/2023 10:57

Excellent re DDog @DoodleMum12! I am also fasting today, @TeaRose29 @chillibear - am hungry but trying to push through til at least 12 noon for carrot and coriander soup...

OP posts:
DoodleMum12 · 17/08/2023 18:16

Kitchen closed at 17:45 after a mini meal
of around 500 calories. About to go for a long evening walk so all in all
a successful FD for me.
