Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Well done @harriethoyle , @MikeHannigansStripyShirt , @mumlikeaboss , @stephglows and @Onehappymam - I think that’s everyone! The last two days have been unexpectedly busy and stressful, and I wasn’t able to stick to plan, but anyway I ended up sort of fasting by default - was starving but no time to eat! The upshot is, I have lost another half pound and am now 1 pound off my mini-goal. Calm has thankfully now descended, and I’m going for a mini of around 800 today, plus I plan to do some weights at home.

I think I'm aiming for a fast today but meeting up with a friend so it sort of depends on what we end up doing...!

Was only 1/2 lb up this morning after a very carby day yesterday, so I'm happy with that!!

A silver lining to your stressful cloud @TeaRose29! Looks like I am working from home tomorrow which is REALLY annoying because fasting is so much harder when I'm not actually at work! This sodding goal is never going to be achieved...! 😂🙀

Well I got a good fast in today with a mini meal at lunchtime 😇 so hoping I'll get 3 in this week if I can make Friday happen...

Signing in for a mini today: I feel revolting, period is due and I’m just feeling vile. So I’ve planned a breakfast and dinner day, under 1000 and if I can manage that I’ll take it as a win.

Kitchen closed on about 800 yesterday, so I succeeded on my mini, although I did feel hungry in the evening. I’ve woken up feeling rather low energy but hopefully will feel better after I’ve eaten. Just weighed myself and another 1/4 off, so 3/4 of a pound to go before I reach my mini-goal for which the reward is a massage!

I am staying strong with the WFH - I've done some cleaning, taken the dogs for a walk and now prepping for a meeting this afternoon. Putting off lunch as long as possible although I am starving...!!

Hi all thanks for kind wishes, today was an epic fail! Cake this afternoon, crisps and snacks galore… some days your hormones just don’t let you fast! I’ll give it a few days and then get back on the wagon.

Now - I'll only maintain it today because it's the weekend 😬 but then next week onwards is consolidation and maybe trying to shave off a couple more kgs so I've got holiday etc wriggle room...

Well done @harriethoyle ! 👏. I know, it’s not linear, is it, but a general downward trend is what we are after.

I had a nice TDEE day yesterday. IF in the morning (rarely have breakfast), then a protein shake (protein powder, collagen, yogurt, sour cream, raw egg), 300 calories, which kept me going all day. For dinner DH made a Chinese beef stir-fry that can only be described as restaurant quality. Then we went to the pub and I had two glasses of wine Blush. Expected weight to be up this morning, so pleasantly surprised that I had maintained. Will try to be sensible today and Saturday and then go for another FD on Sunday. Only 3/4 of a pound to mini-goal, but it is taking an eternity!

Don’t worry, @MikeHannigansStripyShirt , your body needs nourishment at the moment. Have a nice weekend and jump back on it next week.

I gained the last 20lbs v quickly over a stressful 2/3 months so hopefully that means it will come off fairly quick...

It seems to be falling off at the moment, another 1.5lbs this morning 😂 - but I guess it will slow down pretty soon, it always does 🙈

Morning all! Anyone with me? Definitely fasting today and Thursday.. unsure about tomorrow because 15 yo dsd and her BFF are staying and I don't really want to model restricted eating for them. Will definitely IF but just need to see if I can sneak a fd under the radar tomorrow...

Well done everyone, some great weigh ins!
I’ve managed to put on 4lbs over the weekend!! It was a particularly carby weekend so hoping the majority is that as wasn’t particularly bad on the calories. Still on holiday mode today and then going to have b2b and a third FD on Friday.

Morning everyone. I managed to put on 1.5 over the weekend, which has taken two days to lose, so I’m back on my plateau now. Waves to everyone from plateau 🤣. Very busy yesterday, as my DSD had her first baby! Didn’t actually eat very much, but some fizz was consumed Blush.

In an attempt to get off said plateau, I’m going for IF and a mini of 800 today.
