Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Definitely eating ok, we’ll under TDEE. From weighing over the past few weeks think it’s hormonal fluctuations etc… or so I hope. It was back down today so think just need to chill!

harriethoyle · 29/07/2023 15:43

@chillibear I use my weight after the last fd of the week as my measuring point. If I recorded daily fluctuations I'd go mad with the ups and downs!

OP posts:
chillibear · 29/07/2023 18:18

That’s a good idea @harriethoyle had my first day off plan today in 2 months but hopefully stuck to nearly TDEE and a 16:8 IF time

mumlikeaboss · 29/07/2023 19:19

@chillibear have you got a goal 'range' you can try to stick within, rather than an arbitrary number?

Might help you mentally to do that in maintenance... I know my own body weight jumps around by a good 4 or 5lbs even when I'm at a 'steady' weight. It's never the same number 2 days running!

mumlikeaboss · 29/07/2023 19:24

I got two fast days in this week - Tuesday and Friday - and had a MASSIVE whoosh at the end of the week so I'm officially half a stone down in about 10 days!!! 😲

Keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that I can keep it going 🤞🏻🤞🏻

TeaRose29 · 30/07/2023 10:04

Well done @mumlikeaboss , that’s fantastic!

I know a lot of people don’t like to do it, but I just weigh every day, first thing in the morning. It works for me, as I don’t fluctuate much for any reason other than food intake.

Very pleased this morning. Ate out on both Friday and Saturday nights, although I made sensible choices and IF’d during the day, plus did a lot of walking. Only put on 0.25 of a pound, which is good, as a few glasses of wine were consumed Blush. Back on it today, will either do a FD or a mini, depending on how I feel.

mumlikeaboss · 30/07/2023 17:27

@TeaRose29 I mostly weigh every morning too, and have an app that gives me a trend line so I don't have to worry about the blips!

harriethoyle · 31/07/2023 07:42

Morning all - who's with me today? I'm signing in for a b2b. 1.4kg gain over the weekend so keen to get that off ASAP!

chillibear · 31/07/2023 09:09

Well done @mumlikeaboss that's amazing progress. I think you're right with the goal "range". I've never regularly weighed before so haven't realised but my weight seems to fluctuate by quite a lot for no apparent reason!

Good Luck today @harriethoyle . I' out for dinner tonight so OMADing it today.

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 31/07/2023 10:04

I’m joining you today @harriethoyle

I only managed one fast day last week so am determined to have two good fasts this week!

TeaRose29 · 31/07/2023 10:25

I’m with you today, @harriethoyle . Shooting for my mini-goal this week - I’ve promised myself a Thai massage when I reach it. Only 1.5 pounds off, but I’ve been stuck for a month! Good luck for today!

mumlikeaboss · 31/07/2023 11:00

@chillibear you'll figure it out 🤗 sounds like you're doing great.

@harriethoyle I'm in for a fast day today. Rainy museum day with the kids, so should be fine on black coffee... It's being stuck at home that makes me want to eat!!

harriethoyle · 31/07/2023 12:13

Yep @mumlikeaboss I find WFH fast days SOOOOOO hard.

Good luck @chillibear @MikeHannigansStripyShirt looking forward to our successful check ins later on!

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 31/07/2023 21:47

Well done @harriethoyle ! Successful day here too.

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 31/07/2023 21:48

@TeaRose29 @mumlikeaboss how did you both get on?

mumlikeaboss · 31/07/2023 22:07

Good thanks @MikeHannigansStripyShirt ☺️

23 1/2 hour fast with just black coffee / water... And then a 30-minute eating window with a somewhat cobbled-together mini meal!!

Looking forward to lunch tomorrow 🤤

harriethoyle · 01/08/2023 10:36

God I bet @mumlikeaboss - that sounds hardcore!

I'm here for day 2 b2b. I am hungry but motivated...!! have lost 0.8kg of the weekend's weight fluctuation so hopefully back to where I was by Friday and maybe a tiny bit lower with a bit of self-discipline.

OP posts:
mumlikeaboss · 01/08/2023 13:16

@harriethoyle funny thing is I find it easier to do that than to spread the calories out and have a teeny lunch and a tiny dinner!! 😅

Good luck on your b2b 🤩

I'm really having an UP day today, a la Gin Stephens... Buttered toast for breakfast, quiche for lunch 🤤🤤

harriethoyle · 01/08/2023 13:31

Literally my dream day @mumlikeaboss alllll the carbs! 🤣

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 01/08/2023 17:26

It’s almost dinner time and I’ve only eaten 456 calories. Might as well not eat anything else today and call it a FD! This will be my first FD stance coming back from holiday.

I haven’t dared weighed myself. I look and feel bloated and my totm is looming, which is only making it worse. Energy is low too. Hopefully this FD will be the kick start I need!

stephglows · 01/08/2023 19:09

I went off the boil for a couple of weeks but Ive had a canny fast day today. Planning to do another on on Thurs!! Well done to all of you who are sticking to it. I was on hol last week so need to get ridof this bloat!! xx

harriethoyle · 01/08/2023 20:25

Kitchen closing on 755 which is a bit high but I had to have emergency toast. Freaking starving! Back on Thursday for 3rd fd of the week...

Well done getting back on the horse 🐎 @stephglows @Onehappymam

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 02/08/2023 08:19

An overnight drop on the scales has brought me within 0.3kg of target... Will Thursday fd get me there?! This is tortuous! 🤣🙈

OP posts:
chillibear · 02/08/2023 08:26

Amazing @harriethoyle fingers crossed for Thurs!!!
Hope you had a lovely holiday @stephglows
I’m on for a FD today and tomorrow before off on a weekend away.
