Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Well done on your 4 pounds off, @mumlikeaboss . Good luck for today, also to @chillibear and @Badlifeday .

chillibear · 25/07/2023 19:51

Thanks @TeaRose29 , finished on just under 500 calories. Impressed with myself, especially as the kids had pizza from the M&S pizza bar 🤤

harriethoyle · 26/07/2023 07:56

Hi @mumlikeaboss Nice to see your face! I'm also trying to incorporate IF on NFD. Figure it can't do any harm...

Excellent fd @chillibear !

Anyone fasting today? I'm trying for today and tomorrow having failed miserably on Monday 🙈

OP posts:
chillibear · 26/07/2023 08:26

Morning @harriethoyle Hope today goes a bit better for you. I'm doing a mini today and then maybe a FD tomorrow.
I hit my target weight this morning so now need to decide whether to try and lose a few safety lbs before my holiday or whether to start to up my calories to find my maintenance balance.
At the moment I'm trying to do 2 FD 3 MD and then 2 days around TDEE. Thinking of slowly changing to more of a 4:3 🤔

harriethoyle · 26/07/2023 08:40

I'd definitely do safety lbs pre hols @chillibear - but that's because I have no self control on holiday! 🤣🤣🤣

OP posts:
chillibear · 26/07/2023 08:53

You're right @harriethoyle . I'll have all good intentions until I step off the plane 😂

mumlikeaboss · 26/07/2023 08:54

Hello @harriethoyle 🤗 nice to be back

Good FD for me yesterday and a 1/2 lb down this morning 👍🏻👍🏻

I've been pissing around for so long now, slowly regaining weight, I can't believe that it might actually come back off again 🙈🙈😂

Congrats on goal, @chillibear 🥳🥳

chillibear · 26/07/2023 09:18

Thanks @mumlikeaboss got to stay here now, that's the challenge for me!
Nice weight loss, so nice to see after a FD isn't it?! Keep going and you'll get there!

harriethoyle · 26/07/2023 09:29

Amazed at your self-control in waiting til you get off the plane @chillibear 😝

Well done @chillibear on getting to target. I agree, go for some safety pounds if you can! Well done @mumlikeaboss , you are on your way to the half stone mark!

I’m with you today @harriethoyle . Either a FD or a mini depending on how I feel. This week has been all about repairing the damage from last Friday’s dinner party 🤨. I had a mini-target for this week but not sure I will make it. Honestly, this project requires constant vigilance, but it’s worth it. Last night I went out wearing a pair of jeans that I haven’t worn for years, and they were actually a bit loose. They are boot cut - I bought them when they were in fashion, then they went out of fashion, and now they are back in again! 😊.

harriethoyle · 26/07/2023 18:44

@TeaRose29 it's all the fun of shopping without the cost!!

Kitchen closing here on 583 - tuna sandwich for lunch and a veg stir fry for tea. Same tomorrow I suspect...

TeaRose29 · 27/07/2023 09:30

Well done @harriethoyle . In the end I was around 1200 yesterday,as life slightly got in the way. Anyway, I’m OK with that. I might try for a mini today - cannot fast as am playing tennis and I need some fuel for that. Won’t have another opportunity until Sunday, and I’m eating out tomorrow before going to see Barbie with my daughter 😊.

Good luck if you go for a B2B today 💪💪.

harriethoyle · 27/07/2023 10:20

I'm here for my b2b @TeaRose29 and only 0.6kg from target so feeling determined!

I am desperate to see Barbie - one of my DSD is adamant she won't go but the other is keener, so I might see if she fancies it...! NO chance of persuading DH!!

TeaRose29 · 27/07/2023 14:59

I didn’t even try! 🤣🤣

chillibear · 27/07/2023 16:34

Hope today is going well @harriethoyle , You're sooo close!
My scales went up this morning so FD today and tomorrow for me.

chillibear · 27/07/2023 17:47

Done for the day. kitchen closing on 451.

harriethoyle · 27/07/2023 17:50

Excellent FD @chillibear - I'm going to be on 583 after tea but I'm starving! I've got enough for a slice of toast tonight if necessary...

OP posts:
chillibear · 27/07/2023 18:52

Nice one @harriethoyle that’s the nice thing about a b2b, having that leeway!

harriethoyle · 27/07/2023 20:53

Kitchen closing on 749 for c.1380 for my b2b. I'll take that!

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 27/07/2023 23:43

Well done @harriethoyle and @chillibear . Around 1000 for me today, but not at all hungry, so I’m happy with that. Plan to be sensible on Friday and Saturday, then maybe FD on Sunday.

chillibear · 28/07/2023 07:55

Nice one @TeaRose29 . Good plan for the weekend.
im doing similar, FD today and then sensible eating over the weekend. I do IF (even on FF) as finds helps keep me in check.

harriethoyle · 28/07/2023 09:30

Only 0.2kg off overnight but I'm now within 0.4kg of target... Tonight's red wine and pizza won't help with that but DH away Sun-Fri with work so I think I will get my head down and be super virtuous in the hope of finally getting over the line next week! And then I'll need to try and lose a couple of wriggle room kgs for the next holiday I go on...😜

Badlifeday · 28/07/2023 11:17

Good luck HH!
Ive had two Fast days after my three week gap, I love how you can just get right back into it

chillibear · 28/07/2023 20:24

Closing on under 500 today… still managed to put on with 3 FD so def not ready to think about maintaining lol

harriethoyle · 29/07/2023 10:23

Do you think that's because of eating too much of the wrong thing on non FD @chillibear or maybe hormonal? I always find it tough to lose the week before my period - could it be that?
