Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

ive.managed to lose 5lb over the last 2 weeks on 5:2 but ive had a heavy boozy and takeaway weekend so not sure if Ive undone some of my hard work. Had a successful fast today just trying.not to eat anything else tonight. My next fast will be thurs x

Think of it as a marathon not a sprint @stephglows - as long as you're consistent with fast days you're likely to chip away at your weight loss. And that's the point of this way of life. It gives you flexibility to have boozy weekends as long as you don't go crazy during the week!

I totally forgot I was meant to be fasting today until half way through the afternoon! Stopped myself at 793 so a mini will have to do!

I'm fasting today: just water, black coffee, black tea so far. Planning a lentil and vegetable soup for tea.

I'm with you @MikeHannigansStripyShirt and @chillibear . I'm WFH today and it's soooo much harder to fast! Yesterday came in at 546 so a bit of leeway today which is allowing me to have bread with my soup. Happy days!

I was freaking starving @MikeHannigansStripyShirt so I ended up having a toasted thin at 9pm and STILL woke up with hunger pangs at 3am...!!

but on the plus side lighter at the end of this week than I was at the end of last week which is always my goal.

Got an old friend staying this weekend who is always extremely boozy... so goodness knows what the scales will show on Monday. But I'll enjoy it nonetheless!

Going to friends for dinner tonight so I’m IFing today and plan to have a protein shake at about 3pm. Haven’t had anything yet and not particularly hungry. Watching the cricket and the golf simultaneously which is distracting me! Think I will fast on Sunday and Monday as they will be quiet days. Yesterday I had a brothathon 🤣🤣, ie I cooked up a huge batch of bone broth, which I love on a fast day, and froze it in portions.

Annoyingly, I’ve gained 1.5 pounds since the dinner on Friday night - which was very calorific and boozy, but absolutely worth it, my friend is an amazing cook 😊. Quiet day at home today so I am going for a fast/mini, aiming for around 600 cals. Only tea so far. Will have a protein shake (c. 250) at about 2.30pm and planning cold beef with courgette and parsley salad (also c. 250) for dinner.

Major NSV on Friday. Had a big trying-on session of clothes that have been in my wardrobe for YEARS, some of which still with their tags on, as I bought them “for when I lose weight” 🤨. Anyway, literally everything I tried on fitted me, some things were a bit snug, but will be perfect if I can get rid of the last 3 or 4 pounds. I wasn’t expecting my weight loss to have made such a difference already, and it’s really fired me up for the final push 💪💪. Anyone else fasting today?

Hope your mini went well yesterday, I’m checking in for a fast today. I’m about 1lb down from last Monday morning’s weight, I’m trying not to feel annoyed: slow and steady really will win the race won’t it?!

Yes, closed on target at about 600 yesterday. Weighed myself this morning and I have got rid of the 1.5 pounds, so am now back to where I was last week. I’m going for a B2B today:

B = tea
L = protein shake (protein powder, Greek yogurt, raw egg = c.300)
D = salmon with homemade pesto and salad (c.300)

Anyone joining us today?

TeaRose - great NSV with your clothes. Mike - I think 1-2lb a week every week better than 4 one week then nothing for a fortnight!

Failure of a fast day today! Probably in at around 1000 cals. I'll chalk it up to a mini and try again on Wednesday. I'll IF tomorrow.

Me too, @harriethoyle and @MikeHannigansStripyShirt ! Mine was a B2B and I think it was just too much - I woke up feeling grumpy and low energy, which persisted all day. Probably about 1000 for me too, in the end. Feel better this morning and will try for a FD or mini again tomorrow.

Hello, I am! Have been away and didn't choose to fast so has been three weeks and half a stone gained... (amazed it's not more) and hoping I still have my fasting mojo, have got used to just eating again! But if I can gain wait quickly it shows what would happen if I cut fasting out of my life, so really hoping I can manage today and get back in there...

Hi @Badlifeday welcome back! I'm fasting tomorrow @chillibear but managed an IF today which I'm pleased with. Only put on 1/2 kilo this weekend which is fricking miraculous given the amount I ate and drank so keen to get that straight back off...

Haven't joined in much on the last couple of threads, have mostly been doing TRE rather than 5:2 or 4:3... But wanted to try 5:2 again as 2023 has been a rubbish year and I'm 2.5 stone up from where I was 6 months ago 🤬

Have been experimenting with a couple of fast days... I used to do zero-cal fasts because 500 calories feels so diety to me, but a full 36-hr fast feels too difficult right now so am just trying to find a balance!!

It worked quite well last week doing a 24-hour fast and then having a big snack (or a small meal) in a very short window - but not counting or consciously keeping to 500 cals. And then doing 16:8 on the other days.

Am 4lbs down so far, so fingers crossed I can keep this going through the holidays! 🤞🏻

Forgot to say I'm on my first fast day of the week today. Have only had black coffee so far and have some tortilla chips / crudités and lovely pea&lentil dip for later 😍😍 can't wait 🤤
