Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Hi can I join please? I did 5:2 prior.to my.wedding back in 2016 and lost almost 2 stone. After 2 babies, lockdown and getting comfortable I am that 2 stone back up. Started again in right.mindset finally last week and just looking for somewhere to keep the motivation going. Fasting again tomorrow had a successful one on Tues so fingers crossed x

chillibear · 13/07/2023 07:25

Hi @stephglows good luck with your fast today.
I’m at a works team building event today so going to try and be sensible and then fast tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 13/07/2023 07:47

Welcome @stephglows - I'm fasting with you today! Anyone else joining us?

@harriethoyle whats your plan for today? i have ready meal for tea- prawn linguine (290 kcal) and for lunch have a philidelphia dipper thing and a coupleof strawberries (about100 kcal) the rest of my cals on milk in coffee. im running a group this afternoon at work with cake but i will be strong!! good luck

harriethoyle · 13/07/2023 09:59

I'm following my usual boring but geenrally doable FD routine @stephglows! A tuna sandwich made with a thin rather than bread (c 200 cals) and spinach and ricotta canneloni (383) which will bring me in just under 600. I almost inevitably have this lunch on FD and then cycle through two or three suppers -tbh it works for me not to have to think about food too much!

Plans changed on Tuesday so I was WFH rather than in the office and didn't fast. I did skip breakfast though before deciding not to go in, so saved some cals. Yesterday I fasted until about 5pm, then went to my inlaws for DS's birthday where snacks and cake were consumed. No overeating though, and I only had some toast the rest of the day, so I estimate about 1200 cals in total.

harriethoyle · 13/07/2023 19:06

Kitchen closing on 585 here. How did you get on @stephglows?

OP posts:

Hi everyone, I've been lurking for a few days and all your posts have been so helpful! About a stone has crept on between lockdown and ttc/IVF comfort eating. I did a b2b yesterday and Wed, I'd never have known it was 650 on a b2b if I hadn't read here so thank you! Back to normal today and celebrating this morning while I eat a (small) piece of toast before going swimming. I'm ravenous but aiming not to stuff myself! Good luck to anyone doing a fast today x

harriethoyle · 14/07/2023 09:30

Welcome @RoseGold24 and great start!

Slightly disappointed by scales staying the same this morning after yesterday's third FD of the week but there you go! We're away this weekend for a real gastro tour so I suspect next week will be undoing the damage 🤣😬

chillibear · 14/07/2023 11:54

Don't get despondent @harriethoyle it may just take a couple days to show on the scales!
I'm on my 3rd FD today. Need to undo yesterdays team lunch. To be fair, it was fairly healthy and I stayed away from the high calorie deserts and stuck to fruit but still was def over TDEE

chillibear · 14/07/2023 22:38

Finished on 450 today … away for the weekend so hopefully can stay on track!

RoseGold24 · 15/07/2023 12:04

Thanks @harriethoyle! Yesterday's eating was a bit disastrous, but what can I say, it was Friday! Not sure that today will be any better but I went swimming this morning and will do 30 Day Shred again today. Really hope I manage to make a difference and that it shows on the scales soon. But I'd settle for my clothes being a bit comfier first!

RoseGold24 · 15/07/2023 12:05

Hope everyone has a lovely relaxed weekendSmile

harriethoyle · 17/07/2023 07:58

Morning all, hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! We did and it has NOT been catastrophic on the scales, which I'm delighted about!

I'm fasting today then Weds/Thurs b2b... anyone with me?

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 17/07/2023 15:04

Hi can I join you all? I’ve started 5:2 today with the aim of losing about 10lbs/just be able to fit in my clothes, whichever comes sooner!

So far today I’ve had a tomato 😆

Stir fry planned for tea, should be easily under 500 calories

chillibear · 17/07/2023 15:52

Hi @MikeHannigansStripyShirt welcome!
Stir fry is a favourite here too on FD!

Hi @harriethoyle good result over the weekend then!!

FD for me too today...
I was slightly down this morning too which I was surprised about... hoping it doesn't catch up over the next couple days!

I've got 4lbs till my target weight (lots of toning needed though!) What do you guys do before your hols... do you try and lose a bit more to give some leeway or do you stick fast to 5:2 whilst on hols? I'm so worried about piling it all back on!

harriethoyle · 17/07/2023 15:57

@chillibear I don't 5:2 fast on a proper holiday but I do IF for at least 5 days out of 7. Usually I eat so much I'm not hungry for breakfast regardless 🤣

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 17/07/2023 15:58

Welcome @MikeHannigansStripyShirt sounds like you have this well under control!

Closing on 483 today … going to bed before I crack open the treat drawer!

harriethoyle · 17/07/2023 21:17

We're twins @chillibear - kitchen closing here on 484! See you on Weds...

OP posts:
chillibear · 17/07/2023 21:22

Thanks @harriethoyle yeh think IF for the majority of the hols, couple days off, will be the way to go…

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 18/07/2023 06:31

Thanks for the lovely welcome 😊

Final calorie tally for yesterday: 739. I had some rice with the stir fry and it knocked the calories up!

when I’ve successfully 5:2-ed in the past, I’ve planned what I was going to eat and just stuck to it. Having a free form “I’ll have a stir fry” could very easily disintegrate into spring rolls and noodles and a glass of wine to go with it!!

I'll have a think about Thurs (next planned fast day) and what will work.

harriethoyle · 18/07/2023 08:15

Yes @MikeHannigansStripyShirt I agree. I have to plan to the Nth degree on a fd. If I don't, choice leads to overconsumption! It's why I generally eat the same thing on a fd. Mindless but easy...
