Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I thought you'd approve @harriethoyle Grin. Day 2 here and going OK so far, although we have a tea and cake get-together this afternoon as a thank you for some teams involved in a couple of projects which have recently concluded...

harriethoyle · 05/07/2023 13:36

Hiya, done my 2nd fast for this week but ut wasn't a b2b. Today's not been the easiest fast as have had a stomach ache all day but glad have managed to get through the day. Kitchen closed at around 500.

harriethoyle · 05/07/2023 19:39

Well done @EatYourFive - mint tea might settle your tummy, or ginger

Anyone with me today? Day 2 of b2b and 3rd fd of the week. The scales have FINALLY shifted from my mini plateau! Hoping to get a bit more off before the weekend but am happy to be through the barrier I felt stuck on at least...

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 06/07/2023 08:46

As of today, I am officially on holiday!

FD yesterday - 2 workouts and under 500 cals, but the scales didn’t move at all! Seems like you were in a similar situation @harriethoyle. Glad to see the scales are moving for you!

Well done on your FD @EatYourFive. @SydneyCarton you now have me day dreaming about crumpets!

Although the scales have not been in my favour, all of my holiday clothes now fit (it wasn’t looking likely a while ago!), which is by far the greater victory.

See you all on the other side!

harriethoyle · 06/07/2023 09:01

Have a FABULOUS time @Onehappymam and enjoy yourself 🤗

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 06/07/2023 09:24

Enjoy your holiday @Onehappymam !

Ended up with another mini yesterday, I was undone by afternoon cake, but kept it around 1100 calories in total. Might try for another one on Friday to get more of a deficit 🤔

chillibear · 06/07/2023 14:48

Can I join please?
I started 16:8 at the beginning of June but sticking to lower cal days in the week and then relaxing more at weekends so pretty much doing a type of 5:2.

I've now been told that I'm not eating enough calories during the week and that this will mess up my metabolism/make it hard to lose weight and then maintain... does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Surely the higher cal weekends counteract this?

Thank you!

harriethoyle · 06/07/2023 19:07

Kitchen closing here on 695 to give c.1320 over the b2b. Happy with that!

@chillibear welcome! I think that sounds like total tosh to be honest 🤣 if it's working for you, keep doing it!

MamaBanana12 · 06/07/2023 21:55

Can I join???
I'm 4 weeks in doing 16:8 and low carb, sticking to under 1300 Cals!

I'm so far 15.5lbs down in 4 weeks so I feel it's really working and I don't feel the 'struggle'

My biggest issue is lunches I'm getting a bit fed up of rocket salads

I start eating 1pm-8pm

harriethoyle · 10/07/2023 08:24

Morning all, anyone with me today? I'm on a b2b today and tomorrow and a fd Thursday.

Welcome @MamaBanana12 feel free to leap in!

Morning!
I'm in @harriethoyle , need to mitigate the relaxed weekend!

harriethoyle · 10/07/2023 08:53

I had quite a virtuous weekend @chillibear and it's amazing the difference it makes to a) Monday mood and b) Monday weigh in... We've got a couple of real gastro weekends coming up but I'm going to aim for more of the same towards the end of the month and in August 👌

harriethoyle · 10/07/2023 20:05

Kitchen closing on 647. How did you get on @chillibear ? I'm back tomorrow for day 2 of my b2b...

OP posts:
chillibear · 10/07/2023 21:20

I find it easier to be good in the week @harriethoyle so tend to have a treat day on a sat or Sun (sometimes both)
Kitchen closed on 664 so not too bad…
ready for tomorrow!!

harriethoyle · 11/07/2023 08:02

Same same @chillibear - week days not generally a problem but come the weekend and all bets are off! 🤣🙈

Anyone with us two today?

I’ve had some sort of gastric bug for over a week, so it’s been a case of enforced fasting. The upshot is that I am now 4 pounds under in my new stone number. Feels like cheating, but I’m taking it Blush. It is 10 years since my weight has been this low, and I feel great. I tend to put on weight on my stomach, and it feels much flatter. I would like to lose about another 4 pounds, and then finally have that wardrobe sort-out!

Not one of my friends has commented on my weight loss, even though it’s over a stone, and pretty noticeable on my small frame 🤨. Hey ho, it’s been quite gradual, and perhaps it’s not considered appropriate to say anything these days! I am absolutely determined not to regain - this loss has been very hard-fought and hard-won (apart from the aforementioned gastric issues 😬) and I know how easy it is for the pounds to go back on.

Good luck @harriethoyle , I hope your B2B pays off.

harriethoyle · 11/07/2023 19:56

Take the bonus wins where you can get them @TeaRose29! I bet you look fab, well done you

Kitchen closing on 755 which makes 1400 for the b2b. A wee bit high but hopefully it will do. Back on Thursday for a single!

chillibear · 11/07/2023 21:01

Im away this weekend so want to squeeze one more in this week if possible.

Hello everyone
Well done yesterday's fasters, keep it up!
I was also fasting, did a successful B2B, but have a massive project to complete at work over the next couple of weeks so trying to keep away from Internet. If I look at one thing I then look at something else and get distracted.
Will check in here and there. Keep going everyone!x

harriethoyle · 12/07/2023 08:18

Good luck @EatYourFive see you when you're done!
