Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Step away from the biscuits @Onehappymam 😆 you can have some tomorrow...

@beststepforward I'm about 10kg down from my starting weight but have fallen into a plateau of putting on and losing the same 2kg every week. My ideal weight would be c.4kg below where I am so I'm currently making a concerted to permanently drop a couple of kg for good over the next month! 3 x fd planned this week and next so we'll see if that has an impact...

That's amazing well done! You've got this 💪

harriethoyle · 27/06/2023 18:01

Kitchen closing on 540 which is c. 1140 for the b2b. Happy with that!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 27/06/2023 20:55

Edit: I was fecking starving so I had a piece of toast with peanut butter. Kitchen absolutely, definitely closed on 740!

Onehappymam · 27/06/2023 22:01

Thank you for all the words of encouragement.

Turned out to be more of a mini than a full on FD, but it’s a start.

Out tomorrow night and again on Friday, so Thursday will be my next FD. Here’s hoping it’s a better one!

SydneyCarton · 27/06/2023 22:36

Finished on 568 which leaves me with 700 and change for day 2 of a b2b tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 28/06/2023 08:00

Morning all, scales lower than they were this time last week so that's happy making. Just a normal tdee today and then FD3 on Thursday. See you there @Onehappymam !

Good luck today @SydneyCarton 👏

FD for me today. I made a 2 litre batch of bone broth yesterday and I’m planning to drink it throughout the day. It’s about 400 calories in total and I’m hoping it will be filling! 🤞🤞

We are out to dinner on Thursday, then I am away for a couple of days bringing my daughter back from uni, so will just try to be sensible for the rest of the week. I’ve managed to stay 1.5 pounds below my “new number”, so happy with that.

SydneyCarton · 28/06/2023 22:43

Kitchen closed on 699 so 1267 in total for the back to back, pleased with that. TDEE tomorrow and maybe 16:8 on Friday. Looking forward to porridge and a banana for breakfast tomorrow 😋

harriethoyle · 29/06/2023 11:28

Late morning check in from me! Going for a FD but I am so fricking hungry it might turn into a mini... We'll see! Anyone with me?

Tuna thin for lunch and sweet potato and chickpea curry with lashing of broccoli for tea.

Am going to buy bagels for tomorrow's breakfast on the way home 🤗

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 29/06/2023 20:32

Smashed my FD today! 475 cals.

Yesssss!

I’m out tomorrow night and we’ve been invited to a boozy bbq on Sat. Sunday will be my next attempt at a FD.

One week until our holiday. The struggle is real!

How was your FD @harriethoyle? Well done on your SV.

harriethoyle · 29/06/2023 21:09

Fabulous @Onehappymam ! Excellent work 😀

Kitchen closing here on 540. Which I'm happy enough with!

Toasted peanut butter bagel for breakfast tomorrow before lunch with one of my best people. A happy Friday!

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 29/06/2023 21:26

Toasted peanut butter bagel? Sounds bloody delicious. Enjoy!

Well done on a successful FD.

Badlifeday · 29/06/2023 22:09

First time fasting with a hangover. Will be glad when breakfast comes!

harriethoyle · 30/06/2023 07:40

Not an OUNCE off overnight. How bloody irritating?! 🤬🤬🤬

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 02/07/2023 12:39

How frustrating @harriethoyle.

How was the hungover FD @Badlifeday?

Sunday FD for to compensate for two nights eating out on the trot with copious amounts of wine! Although I don’t have a hangover as such I’m def feeling the after effects.

5 days til my holiday. The countdown’s on now!

Badlifeday · 02/07/2023 16:48

I hope you've lost more before your holiday than me, onehappmam, I seem to have come to a standstill again! One more fast and then my holidays - I don't think I'll manage any fasts at all while im away

harriethoyle · 03/07/2023 09:27

Well done @Onehappymam a Sunday fd is heroic!

Things are a bit in flux here - my DF was very unwell this weekend and we had to put end of life plans in place in case the worst comes to the worst... 😭 but trying to stay on track and not use this as an excuse to drink my feelings so I'm still trying for an fd today. I'm off work but will be at DFs care home all day so limited temptation there!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 03/07/2023 09:50

So s>orry to hear that @harriethoyle, I hope he pulls through!

Good luck with the FD today if you decide to stick with it.

I had another weekend of indulgence (DC's birthday party) so lots of damage control to get on with. Went for a run today after the school run so feels like I'm off to a good start.

EatYourFive · 03/07/2023 20:07

Kitchen closed at 500ish. Not fasting tomorrow as have a lunch do at work, back in action on Wednesday.

harriethoyle · 03/07/2023 20:33

Kitchen closing on 494. Not fasting tomorrow because I have to eat the food defrosted for Sunday before parental crisis intervened! Back on Wednesday and Thursday for b2b.

Thanks @EatYourFive Dad much better tonight and much brighter so am hoping he's over the worst 🤞

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 04/07/2023 12:00

@harriethoyle Glad your dad is feeling better. I'm lucky that my parents are still in good health but I'm aware it could change very quickly.

Day 1 of a b2b for me - will probably have quiche and salad post-swimming lessons. Our digital scales have broken so we ordered a new set of old-fashioned mechanical ones and I weighed myself for the first time in a while - 10st 7lb, which is 3-4 lbs lighter than I had been expecting, but 7lbs heavier than I was this time last year! Still within normal BMI but at the higher end, so aiming for 10st

Onehappymam · 04/07/2023 12:26

Hopefully he’s turned a corner @harriethoyle. Remember to take care of yourself too.

Sadly @Badlifeday I won’t be anywhere near where I want to be before I go away. I gained a stone after my last holiday and have been losing and gaining the same few pounds since. It’s the final push now to make some real progress!

Day 1 of b2b. Did a workout this morning - basically jumping about my kitchen to music - and burned 700 cals in 80mins. I am now a sweaty mess! Bought a few pre-packed salad bowls from Asda so that I don’t have to think about FD food prep.

harriethoyle · 04/07/2023 19:54

Thanks @Onehappymam @SydneyCarton I went back to work today and went to see Dad after work and he was much brighter. So that's a huge relief!

I'm doing b2b tomorrow and Thursday. Not hugely excited but needs must 🤣

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 04/07/2023 21:39

Good to hear that @harriethoyle. Kitchen closed here on 985. I was starving when I got in from work and had a couple of buttered crumpets which added an extra 300-odd calories to my planned 650-ish. No regrets though, they tasted great 😊

harriethoyle · 05/07/2023 08:24

I LOVE crumpets @SydneyCarton . Double toasted, dripping with butter and marmite.. 😋
