Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

544 for today; edamame beans and sushi 🍣. Normal day tomorrow as I need some fuel for running, and will try for IF on Thursday.

EatYourFive · 20/06/2023 21:19

Good work @SydneyCarton! I may try and attempt a lunch time run tomorrow as working from home.

harriethoyle · 21/06/2023 07:26

Great work @EatYourFive and @SydneyCarton . Anyone with me today? Had a satisfying drop overnight after yesterday's mini so I'm up for it 😁

I’m doing a mini today. I’ve now lost 13 pounds since I started in February. I’ve lost 3 in the last week, and am now into a new number, which I’m thrilled about. This is the lowest weight I’ve been for over 10 years 😊. I can now get into a lot of my old clothes, and I actually bought some size 8 jeans when I was shopping with my daughter at the weekend, as the 10s were too big. I think they are quite a large 8, and they are rather snug, but I reckon they will be perfect if I can lose another 3 or 4 pounds. (I’m very small boned, and I’ve still got a bit of a tummy).

One thing that I think has helped accelerate my weight loss, I think, is that I have now cut out all UPFs. Never ate a lot as I like fresh food, but some bread, crackers, mayo, Mullerlights, biscuits etc would creep in, and apparently these all count as UPFs 🤨. I honestly feel far less hungry now I’ve ditched these. I’ve also been very active lately - lots of tennis, gardening, and retrieving children from university 🤣.

Anyway, I feel very motivated, especially as I’m only a pound off losing a stone! Good luck Harriet and anyone else going for it today 💪💪.

harriethoyle · 23/06/2023 08:25

Well done @TeaRose29 that's brilliant! Yesterday went awry as dsd 18th birthday and she came over for drinks but a good reason not to fast! I'm really concentrating on not eating out of habit at the moment... just having toast because it's breakfast time etc. I'm not sure it will have a dramatic effect but every little helps.

DH away next week for 2 days and the whole of the week after with work so am going to stock up on high bulk low calorie foods (like stir fry veg and lentils etc) and be properly virtuous. That's the plan after this weekend's 18th birthday celebrations anyway!

Have a great weekend everyone, good luck to any Friday fasters

Yesterday was an accidental mini. We’ve got a little side yard which has been sadly neglected for a couple of years, and yesterday was the day we decided to tackle it. So, I was up early and spent the whole day weeding, scrubbing terracotta pots and re-planting (while watching Queen’s on my ipad 😬). I wasn’t hungry so I didn’t bother eating, just had a few cups of tea and diet coke. Before I knew it, it was 7pm, and I had a lovely fillet steak for my dinner. So probably under 800 calories for the day, plus loads of exercise. Anyway, 0.75 of a pound off this morning. Yay!

Forevermermaid · 24/06/2023 14:50

4lb off in my first week 🥳

Both 5:2 days were fine and I feel like I'm taking back control again, yay!

beststepforward · 25/06/2023 18:18

Hi all

Can we have zero sugar drinks on fast days?

harriethoyle · 26/06/2023 08:03

Morning all

Great first week @Forevermermaid! Keep it up!

I drink them @beststepforward although some people don't.

Anyone with me today? Day 1 of a b2b...

OP posts:
beststepforward · 26/06/2023 09:55

@harriethoyle do you drink them on fast days Harriet?

beststepforward · 26/06/2023 10:05

Yes FD today! Need to stay strong, not done one in months..

harriethoyle · 26/06/2023 11:01

Yes @beststepforward I take the view a can of diet coke is better than a glass of wine! 😂

OP posts:
beststepforward · 26/06/2023 12:15

😂 @harriethoyle thanks!

harriethoyle · 26/06/2023 18:49

Kitchen closing on 598. @beststepforward how did you get on?

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 27/06/2023 06:56

FD here and I better make it a good one!

How did you get on yesterday @beststepforward? I’m in the same boat as you. Haven’t managed a really good FD ages. Here’s hoping today is the day.

EatYourFive · 27/06/2023 07:43

Good morning everyone!
I was fasting yesterday, was a good one and finished at 400. Another fast today but working from home so glad I have some extra calories to spend today.

Good luck @Onehappymam! Is it a single FD for you? Who else is here today?

harriethoyle · 27/06/2023 07:47

Morning @Onehappymam @EatYourFive I'm here for day 2 of a b2b! Sweet potato and chickpea curry on the menu for tonight - half tonight and half on Thursday will give me c.350 cals for supper. Usual tuna thin for lunch.

Anyone else find they eat the same two or three things on rotation on FDs? I almost find it easier if I don't have to think about what I'm eating!

OP posts:
beststepforward · 27/06/2023 07:53

Hi sorry I thought I had responded yesterday. I actually came down with tonsillitis, feeling awful and can see one huge spot in particular. So thought it best not to fast.

Tomorrow we are celebrating Eid so maybe Thursday if I feel well enough!

EatYourFive · 27/06/2023 10:50

Sorry to hear you are poorly @beststepforward, definitely better to skip fasting when unwell! Hope you feel better soon.

@harriethoyle I tend to try and save my calories for dinner in FDs and often make a Gousto meal (or 1/2 if the calorie count is too high) especially on Tuesdays (that's when I get my box). I like it that you can find most of their meals on Nutracheck so easy to count the calories! If I don't have any gousto meals for the day I tend to eat the same old thing each time (boiled egg, some salmon and veg or similar) or just snack and skip proper meals altogether!! So gousto is definitely a good option for me!

beststepforward · 27/06/2023 11:17

@harriethoyle where are you on your journey now? I recognise your username 😊

Onehappymam · 27/06/2023 11:42

I have had 150 calories worth of biscuits from the staff biscuit tin.

Help!

I did think for a moment ‘Oh well, fuck it now, might as well have lunch’. But it’s not the end of the world. I can still do this!

Badlifeday · 27/06/2023 12:35

Just walk away now @Onehappymam You're choosing to fast today, so that's enough. There can be more biscuits tomorrow, if you want.

SydneyCarton · 27/06/2023 12:44

Day 1 of B2B for me here. Not sure what to have for dinner, probably quiche and salad after the DC have their swimming lesson

harriethoyle · 27/06/2023 15:39

Step away from the biscuits @Onehappymam 😆 you can have some tomorrow...

@beststepforward I'm about 10kg down from my starting weight but have fallen into a plateau of putting on and losing the same 2kg every week. My ideal weight would be c.4kg below where I am so I'm currently making a concerted to permanently drop a couple of kg for good over the next month! 3 x fd planned this week and next so we'll see if that has an impact...

Trickedbyadoughnut · 27/06/2023 16:07

Well, I had really come off the wagon since visiting my DM at the beginning of the month, plus a weekend away this weekend, plus time of the month ... I haven't been brave enough to weigh myself (although I can tell by my clothes that I've put a considerable amount back on, sadly.

Finally, today, it is 5 p.m. here and I have not had anything other than black coffee and water, so today is the day I get back to the right way of eating!!!!
