Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Am WFH today rather than in the office, so decided to do IF instead and fast until 1pm. I am no good with FDs at home so would rather set a lower target which I can achieve than try to do a proper FD and get cross because I didn't manage it.
Agree hay fever has been horrible this year - I usually only need a week or so of antihistamines at the start to build up some resistance and then I'm OK all summer, but this year I'm taking them daily Hmm

harriethoyle · 13/06/2023 14:54

Mine's been horrendous @SydneyCarton - I'm double dosing every day!

Early finish from work but a call booked 6-7. Can't decide whether to eat tea before or afterwards... not sure I'll hold out til 7 30!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 13/06/2023 17:44

Kitchen closing on 520 after opting for a pre meeting tea... really happy with that after yesterday. I'd forgotten how healthy and virtuous eating baked fish and stirfried veg makes me feel 🤣 might have the same tomorrow!

@Onehappymam @Badlifeday @SydneyCarton How did you all get on?

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 13/06/2023 20:59

Kitchen closed at somewhere under 700, two day total is under 1200, happy with that. I find fasting so much easier when it's warm, no need for so many snacks.
Off to bed now to dream of tomorrow's breakfast.

SydneyCarton · 13/06/2023 21:54

Well I kept to an eight hour eating window from 1-9pm, but I can’t say I made particularly good choices 🤣. No binging or grazing though. FD tomorrow in the office, then possibly IF again on Friday. Thursday I’m planning a run so I’ll need breakfast 🍳

harriethoyle · 14/06/2023 10:28

Morning all @SydneyCarton I'm on FD2 with you today. Feeling pretty motivated and looks like my day is going to busier than I suspected which always helps!

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 14/06/2023 14:12

That definitely helps @harriethoyle ! Tea and water for me so far, and for dinner whatever needs cooking soonest in the fridge Grin plus veg and salad.

Onehappymam · 14/06/2023 17:38

Managed a reasonable attempt at a FD on Mon and again today.

Aiming for a mini-tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 14/06/2023 20:14

Kitchen closing on 692 and 1212 for the b2b which I'm happy with. 🤞 for a scale victory tomorrow morning!

SydneyCarton · 14/06/2023 21:12

Kitchen closed on about 650, pork loin steaks, fries and salad 😋

harriethoyle · 15/06/2023 08:21

Usual 2kg off - now the usual struggle to a old putting it back on this weekend 🙈 am going to try IF Fri-Sun and stay off the snacks... friends staying til Saturday but going to stay off the booze tonight which hopefully will help!

harriethoyle · 15/06/2023 08:23

To *avoid. Oh, for a MN edit button!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 15/06/2023 08:31

We really are fasting twins @harriethoyle, I am also back to going back and forth with my 2 kg. For me it's 60-62 kg, my lowest weight so far has been 58.7 kg but that was last year. Been stuck ever since! Target weight 57 kg.

harriethoyle · 15/06/2023 08:36

Next week I can do 3FD @EatYourFive so I'm hoping to regain less than 2kg this weekend and then lose a bit more next week... I'm hungry this morning and need to get some breakfast on the way to work but am struggling to think of something I fancy which isn't wildly calorific 🙈 which is exactly why the 2kg goes back on! Maybe I'll go to M and S and get a fruit pot or something similar. I'd prefer a chicken bake though 🤣

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 16/06/2023 09:08

Something of a NSV yesterday - stuck to pineapple for breakfast rather than a chicken slice from Gregg's! and whilst I did have a drink with our friends last night I had a couple of gin and slims and went to bed at 10 unlike my DH who stayed up drinking malbec until 1am 😜

I've decided to drive to a lunch party we're going to tomorrow - it will mean I am restricted to a glass of champagne rather than the likely bottle. and that in turn will reduce Saturday's alcohol consumption, as we won't get back until c.5pm. Am hoping every little helps!

Hi all - can I join in the fun and games please?

I've done 5:2 before a few years ago and lost 3 stone so I know it can be done! Unfortunately I'm now the heaviest I've ever been and need to lose 6 stone...but slow and steady wins the race and all that.

Planning to do 5:2 as well as having a 12 hour window of eating per day - I really need to tackle my awful late night habits!

harriethoyle · 19/06/2023 07:52

Morning @Forevermermaid and welcome! We're a friendly bunch, dive on in!

Anyone fasting with me today? Managed to only regain one of the two usual kgs this weekend so am starting the week with a spring in my step... b2b today and tomorrow and a mini on Thursday.

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 19/06/2023 11:55

Hello @harriethoyle!
I'm fasting today and tomorrow. Didn't bother weighing myself this morning, I'm sure the usual 2 kg are back on after a huge bowl of pasta with pesto (love the stuff) lI had late last night with a couple of large glasses of wine. It was delicious though!

HappiDaze · 19/06/2023 14:12

Just made a delicious salad which hopefully will get me through the rest of the day as I'm up to 682 according to MFP.

Salad was lettuce, tomato, cucumber, avocado, 3 boiled eggs, baby potatoes, spring onion and pizza express house dressing.

I definitely won't be snacking throughout the day after that. I also had 2 coffees with milk and sweetener for breakfast.

I'm going on a long walk later. After seeing myself in photos this weekend I need to fast and exercise properly and be very strict with myself.

I just looked like a blob, lost all shape and looked enormous compared to everyone else. My boobs and stomach have just sort of taken over and are off in all directions. I'm a size 18 but I think more a 20 really. I'm happy being a 14 so I'm aiming for that.

harriethoyle · 19/06/2023 19:16

Ķitchen closed on 574. How did you get on @EatYourFive ? Stay strong @HappiDaze !

I'm no longer fasting tomorrow because I'm wfh unexpectedly but I'll be back on Wed/Thurs and aim for a mini tomorrow 😁

OP posts:
Forevermermaid · 19/06/2023 20:08

First day and I feel amazing! Lots of water, small salad for lunch and just had very small tea, within calorie limit.

Went for a swim in the sea with my DC after work/school which is probably also why I'm buzzing!

harriethoyle · 19/06/2023 20:30

Well done @Forevermermaid may that be the first of many!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 19/06/2023 20:38

Well done @harriethoyle and @Forevermermaid! Hope you have made it through the day too @HappiDaze! I didn't count calories today but gonna guess 600 and that's when I am being generous.
Back tomorrow for day 2.

Badlifeday · 20/06/2023 07:52

I do so love my breakfast after a fast day!!

EatYourFive · 20/06/2023 19:09

Was anyone else fasting today? I just had my dinner, a gousto meal with rice and prawns. Not sure about the exact calories but below 1300 for sure for the two days.
