Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Kitchen closed on 598 @EatYourFive but it might wind up at 770 (toasted thin) because I'm still soooo hungry and last night I really struggled to get to sleep because of my hunger!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 06/06/2023 21:52

Kitchen closed for the actual final time on 794 🤣🙈

Scale disappointment this morning, only 1.5 kg of the holiday bulge has shifted. Still feeling very bloated though for some reason so hoping lots of is just fluids.
Did you get any better results @harriethoyle?

harriethoyle · 07/06/2023 07:49

1.8kg for me @EatYourFive but I'm not feeling too disappointed. I'm doing a mini today and FD3 tomorrow and if I end the week 2kg down I'll be happy tbh. I've got a really good run at FDs this month and so my aim is to be at target by the end then start lowering my daily weight gradually over July 🤞

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 07/06/2023 09:51

Sounds good @harriethoyle!

I think I will aim to do at least one mini if not a third full fast each week in June and July. Luckily have no travel (work or leisure) planned now until our holiday mid-August so also hoping to shift 4-5 kg (permanently!!!) by then. It may be a but ambitious and I really need to find a way to fit more exercise in my routines to be able to achieve that.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 07/06/2023 14:11

I was doing a FD as DH was meant to be out til dinner time (makes it easier when working from home), but when I got back this morning, he'd already defrosted sausages for a BBQ at lunch, so I'm going to try still make it a fast, but with a midday meal. I've done minis a few times like that recently, but not sure how an actual FD will work! Especially as I should be fasting tomorrow (in the office) ...

harriethoyle · 08/06/2023 08:16

How did you get on @Trickedbyadoughnut ? Anyone fasting with me today? I'm on for FD3...

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 08/06/2023 09:53

@harriethoyle I think I am gonna do something between a FD and mini today, aiming for 700-800 calories. I was pleasantly surprised this morning to have lost a little bit more weight overnight after a NFD, so feeling motivated.

harriethoyle · 08/06/2023 10:14

Hurrah @EatYourFive!! I put on 200g overnight so that has stiffened my lacklustre reserve somewhat...!!

EatYourFive · 08/06/2023 15:39

How's it going @harriethoyle? I am working from home and have done reasonably well. I am usually prone to snacking when not in the office, but today have managed to resist the temptation (well mostly!) and also went for a little 3 km run.

harriethoyle · 08/06/2023 15:52

I'm so impressed by exercise in top of a mini FD @EatYourFive !

I'm okay. Very busy day so no time to feel hungry 🤣 should be home by 6 and eating by 6.30. Will come in at c.200 I think...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 08/06/2023 15:54

C.600 cals. I'm not superhuman!

harriethoyle · 08/06/2023 18:56

Kitchen closing on 598 👌

EatYourFive · 08/06/2023 20:10

Well done @harriethoyle, that's an excellent result. I ended up having a bit more than Iintended but still less than 1000 calories for the day. Would have been quite a good mini-fast had I not been seduced by a rogue slice (and a half) of cheese when giving some to DD as a snack.

EatYourFive · 09/06/2023 06:47

Woohoo, another 600g gone, half way through the holiday bulge now!
Any results for you @harriethoyle?

harriethoyle · 09/06/2023 07:19

Fabulous @EatYourFive ! 👏

Only 300g off here which is disappointing but I guess the way to think of it is better 300g off thsn 300g on! Out for lunch with colleagues today but will err on the salad side of things rather than pizza I think 🤣

Good morning, hope you all had a wonderful weekend.😎

Another week, another B2B/FD. Who's with me today (and tomorrow)?

harriethoyle · 12/06/2023 08:31

Morning @EatYourFive I had planned today as a fast day but I feel EXHAUSTED and really pathetic...!! am going to get a coffee when I get to work and see how I feel. It'll be a mini if not a FD and tomorrow will definitely be a FD... Will keep you posted!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 12/06/2023 09:40

If you're not feeling it today just leave it and try again tomorrow @harriethoyle , easier to fast when you are feeling motivated. I think I will do a B2B today and tomorrow and then a mini on Thursday as it worked quite well last week. Also aiming to fit in a couple of runs.

SydneyCarton · 12/06/2023 12:11

Trying for my usual Tuesday/Wednesday B2B this week as should be back in the office. Will attempt (ha!) to stick to TDEE using MFP for the rest of the days as am conscious of overdoing it a bit at the weekend.

@EatYourFive I went for a run this morning and it was horribly hot and muggy, hope it's a bit cooler where you are

Onehappymam · 12/06/2023 14:40

I need to get into the habit of fasting again.

I hit target, went on holiday, then a weekend away, and slowly I undid all my good work.

So here I am!

My next holiday is less than 4 weeks away. At this rate I won’t have any holiday clothes that fit!

harriethoyle · 13/06/2023 07:45

Morning all, I'm back! Thanks for the support yesterday @EatYourFive I took your advice and postponed my FD. I thought I was going to faint at the train station I felt so wretched... anyone else's hay-fever totally out of control these last few days?

Feeling a bit better today so I'm aiming for a b2b. Tuna thin and baked fish for tea tonight, DH is away so always a bit easier in his absence. Quite a quiet weekend coming up too, so am going to try and take it easy...

@SydneyCarton are you with me on b2b? @Onehappymam join us on your restart! 4 weeks is lots of time to make a dint...

Badlifeday · 13/06/2023 09:55

I've had a couple of weeks of only fasting twice a week, and overeating (away with work) and have gained half a stone 😱

Badlifeday · 13/06/2023 09:56

@Onehappymam ive a holiday in about 3 or 4 weeks too. Won't be needing any new, smaller clothes

EatYourFive · 13/06/2023 10:13

@harriethoyle I hope you feeling better today and can have a successful FD. My hay fever has been really up and down this year, have had some truly horrendous days but most of the time it's fine. Can't work out what triggers it. A colleague of mine swears by a hay-fever vaccination. You can only have it privately so it costs like £90 but she says it works for 3 months and makes such a difference.

Day 2 B2B for me. Good luck @SydneyCarton if you are fasting and come and join us @Onehappymam, I agree with @harriethoyle, four weeks can make a big difference!!
