Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I'd done 5:2 right at the start with 500 calories and had similar amounts of weight loss - what it does for me is reset my appetite, stops me craving so much sugar and has me wanting more fruit, veg and protein, so I think the benefits are there on the non-FDs on 500 and 800. I might need to reassess nearer to goal though!

harriethoyle · 01/06/2023 10:45

I'm fasting with you today @Trickedbyadoughnut - tuna salad for lunch and stirfry for tea.

Kitchen closing here on 791 - tiny bit higher than I'd hoped but DH cracked open the BBQ and I had a couple of chicken thighs. I couldn't resist the crispy skin!

Hi, can I ask what calories everyone eats on the non fast days? I want to lose another 2.5lbs and not sure how best. Atm I am doing a few fast days every couple of weeks.

I'm going to get my calories up on the non fast days, as they are currently about 35% in deficit on non fast days, which is too much, but still make progress on dropping the 2.5lbs. Advice welcome!

harriethoyle · 02/06/2023 10:27

@MistySkiesAreGone when I want to lose a couple of pounds rather than maintain I do three fast days a week and I do intermittent fasting on NFD (except for those immediately after a FD). So the week would be Mon/Tues FD, Weds normal, Th FD, Fri normal, Sat/Sun IF. I don't count calories on a NFD unless I'm specifically aiming for a mini (under 1000 cals).

Thanks @harriethoyle

SydneyCarton · 04/06/2023 11:02

No fasting for me last week as we were away for half term in a lovely holiday home; parents, siblings, children etc, the whole family which was really nice. Drank a lot more than I normally would, which is not to say loads, but a couple of glasses of wine each night.
DP and I went out for my birthday meal last night as well, which was delicious and quite indulgent. Back on the wagon from tomorrow, although my actual birthday is on Tuesday which is usually a FD for me, so may do a few days of IF and one FD on Wednesday instead 🤔

harriethoyle · 04/06/2023 15:53

I'm back on the wagon tomorrow too @SydneyCarton after a similarly indulgent week. 3 x FD on Mon Tues and Thurs I think to try and make good headway. My shorts are a bit tight 😳

Got on the scales this morning and don't know who got the biggest shock - me or them! So am properly committed to this week's threesie... today is FD1, sign in if you're with me 😊

EatYourFive · 05/06/2023 08:00

Good morning, I'm with you today @harriethoyle and @SydneyCarton! A rather boozy and overindulgent half-term getaway has resulted in almost 4 kg of bulge, including the 2kg I gain and lose every week. So we definitely have some work to do here, day 1 B2B here we go, good luck today everyone!

harriethoyle · 05/06/2023 08:24

Oh my God @EatYourFive we're scale twins 🤣 I would really like to finish June with that 4kg off for good, and then push down into the next bracket... weekend boozing is the killer for me!

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 05/06/2023 09:48

@harriethoyle and @EatYourFive I'm fasting today! Had a bit of an extravagent week, bit too much slack for myself for my birthday - I shouldn't really celebrate ALL week!

We were a bit short on food in the house so cobbled together the world's oddest stirfry to bring to work, but hopefully it will fill me up nicely.

Whitecistus · 05/06/2023 11:23

@harriethoyle @EatYourFive I’m your scale triplet lol… I also over indulge at weekends and need to work on this!! Am trying B2B fast today and tomorrow so fingers crossed

harriethoyle · 05/06/2023 14:18

How's everyone getting on? I managed to push through to 1pm lunchtime but felt positively shaky with hunger... Just shows how much my tummy has stretched after a week and a half of hols!

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 05/06/2023 15:27

Funnily enough (or not, given the crap I ate this last week), I've been struggling today too - it's half four here and I've just started eating my tea! Usually I can wait til after six.

Keep going @harriethoyle

Bottl · 05/06/2023 16:35

Hello everyone,

Getting back on the wagon today (again!).

Had a reasonably successful morning but just dived into the malted milks whilst giving after school snacks to the small people. Might switch to giving only savoury snacks to the children in future...less temptation for me.

Just come back from a great few days visiting a friend. Whilst it was a fab holiday, my friend is the queen of selfies and I was really not happy with most of the photos taken!!

Trying to have a more positive attitude to fasting this time around!

EatYourFive · 05/06/2023 18:27

@Bottl I am with you when it comes to photos, I'm hopeless with selfish anyway but absolutely hate seeing mu pictures these days, I always look older and chubbier than I think I am!! 😀

Kitchen closed at 530, dinner was home made egg fried rice with chicken and veg, yummy. How did everyone else get on?

harriethoyle · 05/06/2023 19:42

Hi @EatYourFive kitchen closed here on 598. Feeling back in control and up for tomorrow's b2b 👌

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 05/06/2023 20:23

Great work @harriethoyle! I am also feeling motivated, the almost four kilos I gained in just over a week certainly help with that! 😄

harriethoyle · 05/06/2023 20:45

🤣🤣 I hear ya, twinsie!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 06/06/2023 07:49

Only 0.8 kg shifted overnight, a day 2 is definitely needed!! @harriethoyle you still with me? Anyone else?

harriethoyle · 06/06/2023 07:54

Yes @EatYourFive I'm here and up for it. 1.2kg of bloat off overnight which makes me feel much better.

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 06/06/2023 13:38

Well done @harriethoyle! I am hoping to see at least another 0.8 kg gone overnight, hoping to be back to pre-holiday weight after next week's B2B.

How are you getting on today? I have had some fruit and milky coffees, saving most calories for dinner. Still feeling motivated, may try and do a mini on Thursday.

harriethoyle · 06/06/2023 13:58

I'm fecking starving @EatYourFive and a visiting member of staff brought in the MOST amazing tray of pastries to our lunch room. Had to almost literally sit on my hands!! Never mind... I am hoping virtue is its own reward and am already looking forward to tonight's canneloni...!!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 06/06/2023 20:48

How did you get on in the end @harriethoyle? Kitchen here closed at around 700, a bit more than I would have liked. Feeling bloated and heavy, I fear there may not be much loss overnight.
