Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Well done @HappiDaze an excellent couple of days. @SydneyCarton I'm so bad at drinking water on fds but am going to fill a water jug on my desk today...

Anyone fasting with me today?

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 24/05/2023 09:29

@harriethoyle Day 2 of my b2b, and I will also be filling up my water bottle, although I have back to back meetings so praying some finish early so I can get a toilet break!

HappiDaze · 24/05/2023 14:31

I've let myself down with 2 pittas already, however I will have a veggie stir fry later so should finish under 700. I'm also planning on a walk later on this evening

harriethoyle · 24/05/2023 15:00

You haven't let yourself down at all @HappiDaze under 700 is totally legitimate, particularly following on the heels of two excellent days. Give yourself credit!

@SydneyCarton how are you doing? I tell you what, drinking all this water means multiple trips to the loo!! 😆

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 24/05/2023 16:48

@harriethoyle Not bad so far. Meeting 1 which was scheduled for two hours fortunately had to finish early which was a relief to my bladder! Got through about 1.5 litres of water and two cups of tea, and will aim for another litre before bed. Hope you kept your water jug filled!

harriethoyle · 24/05/2023 20:53

Kitchen closed on 598. How did you get on @SydneyCarton ?

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 24/05/2023 20:57

@harriethoyle 786 (Dairy Milk was my downfall), so 1430 for the b2b. Happy with that, it’s been a while since I’ve had two successful FDs.

PersisFord · 24/05/2023 21:19

Nice work @SydneyCarton @harriethoyle @HappiDaze . I agree with not drinking enough....but then yesterday I had an overrunning meeting at 4 and had been too busy to eat or drink much all day....so had my bottle of water, a coffee and a can of diet coke in the first 30 mins then was BUSTING by the end!!

FD for me here but I'm v conscious of not appearing to be dieting to my kids so I ate with them a small portion of a delicious salad with some strips of steak. Will be well over 500 cals BUT.....it was nutritious, homemade, high in protein and no processed ingredients so it was mindful....and given it's my first week back properly I have awarded it to myself as my second FD!!! I had got into a terrible habit of snacking in the evenings so I think a couple of weeks of mindful eating and portion control, with some FDs, should help get me back on the straight and narrow.

Do any of you have preteen kids? What do you tell them about fasting?

Weighing in tomorrow. Am hoping to be no more than 1kg over target.....wish me luck!

harriethoyle · 24/05/2023 21:43

I hear you @PersisFord 🤣🤣🤣

My dsd have asked about fasting and I've told them about the health benefits, blood pressure stabilisation, and that it means I can enjoy weekend treats with them - all about balance. But tbh I think most teenagers are so self obsessed they barely notice it's a fast day 🤣🙈

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 24/05/2023 22:32

Steak and salad sounds delicious @PersisFord and as you say, nutritious and unprocessed.

I find it easier on FDs to skip breakfast and lunch and then have a normal dinner, so I also don’t broadcast fasting to my children. We talk generally about healthy eating, everything in moderation, importance of exercise etc but they are still quite little (5,7 and 9) so I don’t push it too much.

PersisFord · 25/05/2023 09:49

Just a quick one as am at work but was 0.5kg over target today which is a good baseline. V pleased with myself!

Good luck to the fasters and the non-fasting mindful eaters!

HappiDaze · 25/05/2023 11:52

Finished at 1049 yesterday, far higher than planned because I had cravings.

Today however I am cutting out carbs as much as possible

So I've just eaten gammon, sliced tomato and hummous. All of which would usually go in a pitta. That's only half the calories already and it actually felt like more of a meal spread out on the plate.

Later I'll be having a stir fry probably

HappiDaze · 25/05/2023 11:53

Aiming for a FD

harriethoyle · 30/05/2023 10:00

Morning gang: anyone with me today? I'm doing a mini - we're on a staycation so I'm doing normal fd lunch, and probably bbq tonight but will stick to chicken and undressed salad 🤞

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 30/05/2023 11:09

I'm on FD and much needed, as have been progressively eating more and more crap as the bank holiday weekend went on. I didn't dare to weigh myself this morning so will try to get back on track with FDs today and Thursday and perhaps a mini on Friday!

Just trying to work myself up for a lunchtime swim now. I definitely feel much colder on FDs, so although the water temp is up to 16, I am anticipating feeling chilly! I'll be fine once I'm in though ...

Whitecistus · 30/05/2023 18:47

Hi all,

Am I right in thinking the guidance has now changed to 800 calories on fast days? Or do you still stick to 500 for best results?
thanks 😊

harriethoyle · 30/05/2023 19:37

Kitchen closing on c.700 calories. Veg stir fry for dinner so a bit tricky to guestimate. How did you get on @Trickedbyadoughnut ?

@Whitecistus I try and stay within touching of 500 on a normal single FD and on back to back fast days, I'll aim for 1300 over the two days.

OP posts:
Whitecistus · 30/05/2023 19:57

@harriethoyle thank you!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 30/05/2023 21:24

Well it turned out to be a 24h fast, but then a bit of a free-for-all as DH had organised a surprise birthday meal out (a surprise as my birthday's not til tomorrow)! Bless him. At least I was a cheap date after the fasting 😆

Badlifeday · 31/05/2023 06:49

Aw that sounds nice, happy birthday!

Badlifeday · 31/05/2023 06:50

I should be fasting today but I've miscalculated and am having dinner out - not going to eat until then though.

TeaRose29 · 31/05/2023 13:41

Hello Everyone! I dropped off and haven't posted for a month, due to a lot of other distractions and things going on. I've managed to maintain my weight at what is a new low for me (in recent times), so very happy with that, and now need to go for a big push to lose those last few, really stubborn pounds.

There was an article in the Times a few weeks ago about a gym machine called a VersaClimber, which apparently "torches calories". There is a studio in my area so I've been a couple of times and, well, it is definitely intense! (It's fast cardio but low impact). I had to go on a waiting list, but I've now got myself a permanent slot on Thursday mornings, which I'm really pleased about.

So FD today. So far I've had only a protein shake which had 36g of protein in it, and 170 calories. I'm planning cold poached salmon and salad for dinner.

Anyone else fasting today?

harriethoyle · 31/05/2023 21:32

Happy birthday @Trickedbyadoughnut !

I'm fasting tomorrow @TeaRose29 hope today has gone well for you

OP posts:
Trickedbyadoughnut · 01/06/2023 09:43

@harriethoyle and @Badlifeday thank you!

Fasting today - may be my only proper fast of the week, although I should be able to do another mini tomorrow.

@Whitecistus I usually aim for around 800, especially on a back to back, and have been losing steadily 0.5/1kg per week, which I'm happy enough with.

@TeaRose29 wow, that does sound intense! Well done on finding the motivation for that.

Whitecistus · 01/06/2023 10:02

@Trickedbyadoughnut thank you I think I will try 800, I do my fast days tues/weds so think 500 would kill me off 😂
