Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

😄Luckily most crisps in our household are consumed by the kids (and I suspect DH at nighttime) @harriethoyle!
Glad to hear this was a good week for you! I'm still stalling, will be back next week for a Tuesday Wednesday B2B, have a work lunch on Monday so no fasting then.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 30/09/2022 14:15

Doing a Friday fast here (my third ) as I can't do my usual back home backs next week.
All fine so far

Badlifeday · 01/10/2022 10:07

fasting today after my week of feeling poorly and letting it all go. Have gained back half a stone!!! 😩

harriethoyle · 01/10/2022 11:03

@absolutelyknackeredcow @Badlifeday you're heroes for doing weekend fast days!

OP posts:
Agsiajva · 02/10/2022 20:50

Can I join? I’ve lost 3 stone with calorie counting, got another stone to lose but struggling so wish to introduce the 5:2 (or 4:3). First fast day planned for tomorrow

harriethoyle · 03/10/2022 06:36

WelWelco@Agsiajva ! I'm also fasting today - first day of a b2b. Anyone else joining us?

OP posts:
Badlifeday · 03/10/2022 06:43

Me too, @harriethoyle !
Welcome @Agsiajva what an achievement!

beststepforward · 03/10/2022 12:18

Fasting here too!

harriethoyle · 03/10/2022 16:38

How's everyone doing today? I was HUNGRY by lunchtime but managed to push through to 1pm. Fishcake for tea tonight with peas or sweetcorn depending if DH has gone shopping 🤞

harriethoyle · 03/10/2022 18:39

Kitchen closing on 540. Really happy with that for day one.

Back tomorrow if anyone's joining me!

EatYourFive · 04/10/2022 07:41

Good morning, I'm here for day 1 B2B, who's with me?
I may have to consider a Friday fast this week if I don't lose any weight with B2B, never managed a Friday or weekend fast before..

harriethoyle · 04/10/2022 08:16

Morning @EatYourFive I'm here 😊 day 2 of b2b and 2nd of 3rd FD this week. Feeling pretty strong!

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 04/10/2022 14:55

540 is great @harriethoyle ! Lots (relatively speaking!) left over if you're doing a b2b.

I am fasting today - probably only one this week as only doing one office day due to the train strike. Will be tracking on the other days and might try a bit of 16:8.

Last time I weighed myself was 4th August, according to MFP - should probably check in again to see where I'm at but slightly dreading what the numbers might say 😬

harriethoyle · 04/10/2022 18:42

Kitchen closing here on 662 for a total of 1200 for my b2b. Back on Thursday if anyone is joining me!

@SydneyCarton @EatYourFive hope you both had successful FDs 😊

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 04/10/2022 19:58

Well done @harriethoyle! I have end of B2B jealousy, day 2 for me tomorrow
Today finished at around 550, happy with that.

@SydneyCarton well done for not weighing yourself for that long. I have become a crazy scales lady weighing myself most days.

beststepforward · 04/10/2022 20:27

@harriethoyle some dedication with 3 fasts a week! How long have you done that for? Are you far from goal?

I've struggled todsy. NFD but felt super hungry. I know I've not drank enough water though so will defo do that.

Next FD is planned for Thursday.

SydneyCarton · 04/10/2022 20:31

@EatYourFive I’m just burying my head in the sand 🤣

Kitchen closed on 652, sushi and edamame beans. No fasting tomorrow as I’m planning a run, but might try 16.8 on Thursday

harriethoyle · 04/10/2022 21:42

@EatYourFive it's the definite advantage of a miserable start to the week 😆

@beststepforward I'm just doing three for the next few weeks - want to get back to goal before a big reunion dinner mid October and then we go away all inclusive with the kids for half term week so it's kind of a pre emptive damage repair!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 05/10/2022 07:40

Reluctantly signing up for day 2 B2B. Don't think I will.go for day 3 this week as would have to fast on Friday, might do some sort of mini though and maybe just eat dinner.

@SydneyCarton sushi sounds lovely! Have sometimes had itsu sashimi for lunch on fast days but it doesn't feel like very good value for money.
@harriethoyle ooh exciting, I have never done an all exclusive holiday! Both DH and I have lots of family overseas and usually spend most of our holidays visiting them (mainly for the kids' sake!) with the odd day or two spent in a hotel somewhere.

harriethoyle · 05/10/2022 10:06

I agree re swerving a Friday FD @EatYourFive . You're setting yourself up to fail... I would be, in any event! Do a 16:8 instead.

I think I'm going to do that on holiday to limit the damage. AI is amazing but it's dangerous 😆

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 05/10/2022 15:51

@harriethoyle I am not sure all inclusive would work for me, I would no doubt make sure I'd be eating my money's worth and would probably gain a stone ina week! Do they usually include alcohol as well? I have a six day work trip coming up in less than two weeks and those are bad enough, no fasting and someone else paying for all the food and drink!

FD going OK but looking forward to bed time and tomorrow's breakfast.

SydneyCarton · 05/10/2022 21:48

@EatYourFive There is a sushi place near work (Abokado) which reduces its sushi to half price after 3.30 pm, so when DP and I are in the office we nip out to see what’s left. We keep it in the fridge at work and take it back for dinner. Too expensive otherwise!

harriethoyle · 06/10/2022 07:37

@EatYourFive yes, alcohol is included as well. It's both a blessing and a curse and I usually end up putting at least 3 kilos on 😆😆😆

Who's with me today? FD3 incoming...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 06/10/2022 20:36

Kitchen closed here on 586. I found today HARD. Not helped by absolutely streaming with cold... bring on the breakfast crumpets!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 06/10/2022 21:09

Well done @harriethoyle! Sorry to hear about the cold, I've also not felt great for the past couple days and even did a covid test, been a while! Luckily it was negative although when I did have covid I only tested positive after 6 days of having symptoms.
Goes without saying that I am no longer even considering a Friday fast! 😁
