Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

How are you getting on @harriethoyle? I'm pretty hungry trying to save most calories until dinner time, determined to get there though!

harriethoyle · 21/09/2022 16:44

Fricking starving @EatYourFive 😆😆😆 but am going to get there. I really need to!

Also aiming for a mini tomorrow - made a huge vat of soup with leftover chicken carcass from a roast so that should sustain me for the next couple of lunches til the end of the week...

Kitchen closing on 620. How have you got on @EatYourFive ?

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 22/09/2022 07:28

Oh no wrote an update last night but obviously forgot to press post! 🙄
Finished at around 600 yesterday, felt like it was relatively easy and as I saved most calories for dinner not feeling that hungry this morning. Day 2 B2B here we go!
Any other fasters here today?

harriethoyle · 22/09/2022 08:36

I'm trying a mini @EatYourFive . Have had breakfast toast but sticking to soup only for lunch and a stir fry for tea and aiming to come on c 1000 calories. Need to get back to target ASAP!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 22/09/2022 08:56

@harriethoyle have you been able to get back to your pre-holiday weight or have you got a new more ambitious target now? I remember you going below 70 kg at one point or am I mistaken?

harriethoyle · 22/09/2022 09:17

I'm still trying to get back to original target @EatYourFive ! 😳 a week of leave then the bank holiday week was catastrophic for the scales! On the plus side I can do 3 x fd for the next couple of weeks so aiming to be back there by October 🤞

First FD in a while yesterday - there was only full fat milk in the office fridge which I hate in tea, so I managed to stick to water only during the day. Ended up on 1100 cal in the end - chicken and prawn salad, handful of crisps and some toast. Was hoping to come in at the top end of a mini, but hey ho. I did a lot of walking as well, and both MFP and my Apple watch gave me a 1000 calorie surplus (or do I mean deficit?) so not bad. Tracking for the rest of the week, then a day out with friends on Saturday - I won't count calories but might skip breakfast to give myself a bit more wiggle room!

EatYourFive · 22/09/2022 21:03

Hopefully you'll be back on target in no time @harriethoyle!
Day 2 finished at just over 700. Was hoping for less than that but had too much milky coffee once again, wish I could learn to like my coffee black.

harriethoyle · 22/09/2022 21:20

@EatYourFive managed to finish on c.1100 which is OK for a nfd. 700 is only 50 over b2b so that's absolutely grand!

Fasting today and I am so ready for my breakfast tomorrow! I have a cold and it's definitely hard to go against my habit of heading straight for the ice cream and comfort food.

harriethoyle · 25/09/2022 20:33

I'm prepped for tomorrow which will be day 1 of a b2b. Anyone with me?

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 25/09/2022 22:46

I will be fasting tomorrow @harriethoyle. Have had a bit of an upset tum so also fasted today. Very much hoping a double fast will clear me

harriethoyle · 26/09/2022 14:36

How's anyone getting on? I was hungry but busy this morning but unfortunately I am now hungry and idle! Trying to sit on my hands and not go searching for snacks. I ignored a HUGE amount of cake in the office lunch room though so feeling very virtuous.

harriethoyle · 26/09/2022 18:56

Kitchen closing on 654. Back tomorrow for day 2 of a b2b and second FD of the week.

How did you get on @absolutelyknackeredcow ?

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 26/09/2022 19:04

Hi @harriethoyle, I have also been fasting today, day 1 b2b. Kitchen closing at 411 so can have a bit more tomorrow. Luckily for some reason the coffee maker in the office makes really disgusting coffee at the moment so I'm not wasting all my calories on milky coffee drinks.

harriethoyle · 26/09/2022 19:16

Oh well done @EatYourFive that's a brilliant fast!

Had a chapatti with daal curry and a trek protein bar

Tummy is rumbling away but trying to be brave! In bed and will switch tv off soon.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 26/09/2022 22:01

Well done @harriethoyle @EatYourFive - I am kitchen closed on 560 on day 2

Welcome back @beststepforward !

Excellent day 2 @absolutelyknackeredcow well done.

I'm already hungry.... is it lunchtime yet?! Roll on 1pm!

beststepforward · 27/09/2022 08:03

Thanks! Scales down 1.5lbs this morning. Know it's just water weight but still. First goal is 10 stone. Then 9.5 stone.

Current weight today 10st 5.9lbs

EatYourFive · 27/09/2022 09:12

Here for day 2 b2b and depending on the outcome (and how I feel on the day) may push for a 3rd fast on Thursday. So far so good, not feeling that hungry yet. Will once again save most calories for dinner and make it through the day with coffee and fruit.

Good luck today @harriethoyle and anyone else who's fasting, we can do this!

Badlifeday · 27/09/2022 12:38

I've really fallen off the wagon, got a bad cold at the weekend and think I've got a chest infection now - enough to keep me in bed anyway. I've missed too fast days and eaten anything I can find. I'm hoping as soon as I feel better I can jump back in, and I've not damaged my success too much Sad

harriethoyle · 27/09/2022 12:54

@Badlifeday get yourself better and then rejoin us - even if a bit of damage has been done, a good couple of weeks will get you back to where you were so don't stress too much. It'll be reet!
