Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

A measly 300g off for yesterday's tortuous FD...! 🤯 I am unimpressed!! 😆

Sorry so many are poorly Flowers
I'm feeling hungry today, not helped by the weather and it being Friday. Still it means I can have an eating day on a Saturday Smile

absolutelyknackeredcow · 07/10/2022 20:26

AI was my downfall @harriethoyle
I did a Friday fast which I hate and then going to have to do Mon/ Tues next week and probably Friday as well. Lots of birthdays and not enough fast days

harriethoyle · 08/10/2022 08:25

But what a glorious downfall @absolutelyknackeredcow !! 😆😆😆

My uncle is staying this weekend and I drank far too much red wine and was sick at 2am... 🤢🙈 my tolerance for alcohol definitely lessens as I get older. Does anyone else find this?!

mumlikeaboss · 09/10/2022 00:16

Sneaking in just to reassure everyone I haven't sunk without trace!! 🙈

Confession though, I'm not managing any fast days at all right now. Under a whole load of stress, Hashimoto's playing up, DH been away on business, kids and I all been ill with numerous colds etc... 🙄

Holding level weight wise with daily fasting, usually somewhere between 16:8 and 23:1, and think ADF is just too much at the moment. Sounds like you're all doing great 🥰 hope I'll be able to rejoin you at some stage!

EatYourFive · 10/10/2022 07:54

Good morning, here for day 1 B2B. Feeling a bit rubbish still which led to lots of comfort eating, too much wine and no exercise over the weekend so a B2B is definitely needed.
Anyone joining me?

harriethoyle · 10/10/2022 08:00

Morning @EatYourFive I'm b2b-ing with you 😊 soup for lunch and fishcake for tea. What have you got planned?

Come and join us soon @mumlikeaboss !

EatYourFive · 10/10/2022 08:51

Yay @harriethoyle! I am planning to just have fruit (and coffee with milk of course) during the day and make butternut squash and carrot soup for dinner, have lots of carrots to use up!

harriethoyle · 10/10/2022 14:05

I'm hungry and cold @EatYourFive . How are you getting on?!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 10/10/2022 19:41

Also very cold @harriethoyle! Was working from home and had to wear my new oodie with a cat sleeping on my lap, that helped a bit. Not looking forward to winter when it's actually cold!
My squash carrot lentil soup was very nice. Kitchen closed at 601 today. How did you get on?

absolutelyknackeredcow · 10/10/2022 20:27

Hello @EatYourFive @harriethoyle
I am on day 1 of b2b and have come in at about 575 which I am pretty happy about.
Might come in a bit higher tomorrow as it's DH birthday and we are having cake although I already celebrated yesterday

harriethoyle · 10/10/2022 20:55

Kitchen closed here on 550 exactly. @absolutelyknackeredcow @EatYourFive I'll see you tomorrow for day 2!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 11/10/2022 07:32

Well done @harriethoyle and @absolutelyknackeredcow! Checking in for day 2 B2B, think today is going to be harder. Good luck today!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 11/10/2022 08:35

@EatYourFive
@harriethoyle
The youngest child kept me awake most of the night (even though she's 9!) and I'm tired and starving
I managed to serve everyone else birthday pastries for my DH and avoid one myself but not sure how long I'm going to last to be honest

harriethoyle · 11/10/2022 08:54

Do your best @absolutelyknackeredcow but worst comes to the worst, you got a good FD done yesterday

Absolute train chaos this morning which is NOT improving my mood...! 🙈

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 11/10/2022 12:56

How is everyone getting on? Hope you are not feeling too bad @absolutelyknackeredcow.
I am really hungry but have to hold off eating until dinner time so that can have a reasonable amount of my gousto meal..

absolutelyknackeredcow · 11/10/2022 16:22

It's been really hard to be honest
🥲
Currently on 400 hundred - aiming to come in at 800

harriethoyle · 11/10/2022 16:26

I'm tired and grumpy @EatYourFive but I won't be home before 6pm and that will be a good time for tea so I'm pushing through. I've got enough calories for a slice of toast as well as dinner, but I'm keeping it in reserve if I can!

Keep going @absolutelyknackeredcow - you got this!

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 11/10/2022 16:42

Go for it @harriethoyle

harriethoyle · 11/10/2022 19:22

Kitchen closing here on 688. Emergency toast had to be deployed but I skipped the peas I'd planned with my fishcake.

Square crumpet for breakfast tomorrow. YUM! 😆

EatYourFive · 11/10/2022 20:08

Woah today was harder than expected. Feeling a bit headachey now even though have drank lots of water. Well it's done now, kitchen closed at 527 with a small portion of gousto meal for dinner. Breadmaker is all prepped, can't wait to wake up to the smell of fresh bread.

SydneyCarton · 11/10/2022 20:28

Day 1 of a b2b but slight change of plans as DP and I went to Wagamama after work…. Yaki udon and a shared portion of chilli squid came in at 923 calories! Mini for me then…. Now torturing myself watching the lemon meringue pies on Bake-off Grin

absolutelyknackeredcow · 11/10/2022 20:47

Z
Well done @EatYourFive @harriethoyle
Closed out at 670 on day 2
