Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Thank you @harriethoyle that is what I needed to hear!

SydneyCarton · 27/09/2022 14:50

Day 1 of first b2b for ages, and going OK so far on tea and water. Unfortunately one of my colleagues has had a birthday and brought in a huge delicious chocolate cake and I am sitting right next to it 😱I'm not even a huge chocolate fan, but when you can't have it it suddenly becomes irresistible!

harriethoyle · 27/09/2022 15:36

It's the delicious smell @SydneyCarton I'm the same - can resist and not even think about cake for ages and then when it's in front of me on a FD it's ALL I want!!

My sandwich was rather soggy because I overketchuped it... Not a very satisfactory lunch! Going via the supermarket on the way home for fishcakes for tonight I think, got some leftover salad which needs eating too.

Kitchen closing on 615 so a total of 1270 for the b2n which I'm happy with!

Back on Thursday for FD3 🙌

Well done all those fasters - fabulous work 👏🏻👏🏻

SydneyCarton · 27/09/2022 21:47

That’s a great total @harriethoyle Kitchen closed here on 825 (sushi always more calorific than I think) but happy with that for day 1 of b2b

harriethoyle · 28/09/2022 07:43

I always think sushi feels very pure and healthy @SydneyCarton which is, of course, bollocks when you're eating a chicken katsu hand roll 😆

A good fall on the scales this morning, crumpets for breakfast and resolve strengthened for tomorrow's FD3!

Yesterday's fast wasn't the best, went over 800 although after Monday's success was still within the B2B limits for two days. Weight has remained stagnant so may push for another fast tomorrow, especially as I have to go to the office and I tend to have better results when there.

harriethoyle · 28/09/2022 09:18

Join me tomorrow @EatYourFive we'll feel strong and virtuous together... 🙌

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 28/09/2022 09:41

Surprisingly long list of ingredients on the sushi for something you think is basically rice and fish and a bit of cucumber 😬

@EatYourFive Apparently Michael Mosely has revised the original 5:2 plan to 800 cals on FDs as people were struggling with 500

Day 2 of b2b and very busy this morning so no time to eat even if I wasn’t fasting. Hopefully it’ll stay like that for the rest of the day….

beststepforward · 28/09/2022 10:25

I did a decent NFD yesterday and another FD today.. feeling better for it already.

Having a mince paratha today for dinner. Not sure on exact cals but it should'nt be more than 600 at the most.

@SydneyCarton I think he says 800 cals if it's low carb only?

SydneyCarton · 28/09/2022 12:18

I thought it seemed too good to be true!

harriethoyle · 28/09/2022 12:27

Don't forget though @SydneyCarton @Badlifeday that, on a b2b, which I think @EatYourFive was on with me, you get 1300 over the two days, up to 800 one day and the rest the other... I used to do 500 on day one and 800 on day two, although now I tend to fall about equally at 650ish each day.

Have changed my mind. I'm having 2 chapatti's home made with chicken kebab, yogurt and cucumber 🥒 and hopefully call it a day. That'll be two FD's nailed!

Sunnydaymum · 28/09/2022 22:51

Hello everyone!

I am new to 5:2-just 3 weeks in but I have been following with interest and enjoying the chat and advice.

I hope you don't mind me just dropping in and starting with a question 🙂

I have been doing B2B days at the start of each week (Monday and Tuesday) to try and create a routine and I've found that I am ravenously hungry when I move to my NFD on a Wednesday even though I am eating more! Does anyone have any advice on how I can manage my hunger on NFD? I am not sure if I am doing something wrong.

harriethoyle · 29/09/2022 08:41

Morning @Sunnydaymum - I don't suffer from that issue but have you tried splitting your FD to Mon and weds so you don't get as hungry?

I'm on FD3 today: @EatYourFive are you with me? Anyone else?

I might try that...I was just trying to get them out of the way but that's probably not a very good way of looking at them particularly in the longer term 😂😂

EatYourFive · 29/09/2022 09:21

Yep @harriethoyle I'm here for a single FD, having not lost any weight with my b2b earlier this week. I think in order for b2b to work properly I have to have max 600 calories each day, looks like doing ~400 on day 1 and ~800 on day 2 didn't work. I did have some carbs on day 2 so maybe that's why?

I think you might see the loss later in the week..

beststepforward · 29/09/2022 15:04

NFD here for me today.

Not made great choices (large lamb keema samosa and a can of irn bru) but I'm not ravenous hungry so should be able to control for the rest of the day.

Determined to do it this time. I've been napping for an hour a day and that seems to have helped how I feel overall and I am managing 5:2 much better than previous attempts

harriethoyle · 29/09/2022 17:06

The speed of my weight loss fluctuates wildly during the month... I can't see any rhyme or reason to it @EatYourFive ! So you might get a whoosh tomorrow or be super successful next week.

I'm on the train home and the woman next to me is eating salt and vinegar crisps and they smell divine... tempted to lick one so she'd have to let me have it. Would I get arrested do we think?!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 29/09/2022 18:28

@beststepforward I hope you are right and some weight will shift by tomorrow morning but counting on it.

@harriethoyle I stole a few wotsits from my youngest and they tasted amazing!! So i cab see nothing wrong with some crisp licking..

Kitchen closed at 500 here (+ four wotsits on top of that).
Looking forward to tomorrow's breakfast, early night tonight!

harriethoyle · 29/09/2022 18:40

Kitchen closing here on 487.

@EatYourFive if you have an aldi near you, their wotsit dupe is amazing! And a MASSIVE bag 😆

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 29/09/2022 19:20

@harriethoyle yes there is, been meaning to start shopping there for ages! Maybe this is finally a good reason to go for it!

harriethoyle · 30/09/2022 08:58

I fear I may be going off message by recommending massive bags of crisps on the 5:2 thread 😆

A good loss this week to undo some of my annual leave damage. B2b next Monday and Tuesday then a third FD Thursday to continue the trend! 🤞
