I know that the ‘calories in, calories out’ balance isn’t really believed so much now as we know there are so many other factors that affect weight.

Estimates say that a typical female burns around 1600-1800 calories a day - more if active. And a lb of fat holds around 3500calories. So if we manage a 800 calorie day, we should have set up a 1000 calorie deficit, so should burn a lb of fat in 3-4 days.

Of course, it doesn’t work like that in practice. Sometimes you stay the same for days then drop three pounds. Our bodies seem to find set points that they like and hang on there as long as they can, before conceding and losing more. Same thing happens to me if I’m eating a bit too much - my body can cope and not put on weight for a little while.

@iamadancer, my guess would be that as long as you do have fat to lose, ie to use as an energy source, and you feel well, some exercise is going to be fine. If you don’t have a lot to lose, or you are finding your exercise much tougher than usual, maybe a few more calories might be good.

IAmADancer · 15/10/2021 07:27

I have been on fast800 since Monday and lost no weight but I haven’t measured my waist yet to see if I have lost any inches. I do carry quite a bit of muscle though so fingers crossed I’m loosing fat!

1Adeline · 18/10/2021 05:58

I’m another 2lb down this week, which I’m pleased with - there were a couple of portions of cottage pie mid-week, with potato mash, that slowed things up a bit.
Plan for today - scrambled egg with mushroom, tomato and courgette for breakfast, chicken and spinach curry for lunch. That leaves enough for two squares of 85% chocolate and some coffees with almond milk.

1Adeline · 19/10/2021 11:50

Yesterday went well - I did get peckish and had a spoonful of peanut butter which always helps make hunger bearable for me.

Today I’ve had a brunch of egg Mayo with tomatoes and olives. Late lunch will be spicy chicken with onions and mushrooms.

Hope everyone is getting on ok this week?

PhoenixMama · 19/10/2021 12:07

I'm down 2lbs (been here before) but hopefully sticking this week. Have a Thanksgiving meal on Sat which will be hard to be good for but don't want to undo all the hard work either.

Finding it so hard right now!

1Adeline · 19/10/2021 16:45

Well done @Phoenixmama! Hope it gets easier as the week goes on and you get into the habit of it.

WildePozy · 20/10/2021 10:50

Hi!
Hope you don't mind me joining your thread. Hoping to use this for accountability.
I have previously tried the 5:2 diet with little success, and have been quite up and down on the scales for the last 10 years. I found eating low carb has worked for me in the past.

I'm aiming for 10k steps a day, 3 litres of water, 16:8 and 800 calories. I haven't read the book, but found a few recipes online that I'm keen to try.

I started last Monday, which probably wasn't ideal as we were away this past weekend and I definitely didn't stick to it. Despite that, I am still down 3lbs which I'm happy with to start me off.
Aiming to do this for 12 weeks -wish me luck!

PhoenixMama · 20/10/2021 11:00

Morning! Down another 1lb so 3 this week which is super motivating! I will hang in there!!

1Adeline · 20/10/2021 19:30

@Wildeposy very good luck and congratulations on a great start! Sounds like a realistic plan.
I have a few of the recipe books but most of my meals are adapted from things I eat anyway, or are made up from whatever is in the fridge. You definitely don’t need the book for recipes, but it is quite inspiring to read when you do get chance.

PhoenixMama · 20/10/2021 19:59

Welcome @WildePozy!

Day took a catastrophic turn and I turned to chocolate. I think because it was so stressful i hasn't eaten much else do seems I'm under my cal count but not really healthy choices. Guess we'll see in the morning.

WildePozy · 21/10/2021 16:16

Thanks @PhoenixMama and @1Adeline for the welcome :) How far into the diet are you?

I’ve had a good day! I was down another 1lb this morning which is extremely motivating. I’m planning on weighing twice weekly.

Yesterday I was slightly over on the 800.
Sweet potato wrap with chicken and spinach
Parma pork with root veg mash and kale.
Both very tasty!

Tonight we’re having almond chicken with stir fry vegetables. I’m just sticking to that and my flat white earlier today, so will be around 700. I’ve been super busy all day so haven’t felt the hunger pangs thankfully.

1Adeline · 22/10/2021 09:12

@Wildepozy your food for yesterday sounds gorgeous.

I lost 5 stone on the diet about three years ago. A stone and a bit has crept back on, due to biscuits mostly! - so I’m addressing that now.

WildePozy · 22/10/2021 14:49

@1Adeline 5 stone is such an achievement. Even with gaining some back, that’s incredible.

I think tonight and this weekend will be my first proper test (seeing as last weekend away was such a slip up). We usually have a bottle of wine or two, lots of coffees and biscuits, plus my husband loves to cook all the high calorie delicious meals so I’m going to have to really be strict with myself.
Will update on Monday!

Drinkwinewithme · 22/10/2021 16:14

Hi there all! Accountabilty for me too coming right up.
I am 12 stone 9, i would love to be under 11 st 13 by Christmas as this brings me to the okay b.m.i . Anything else will be a bonus ;)
waist is at 37 inches and i need that 35 or under.
I will walk 10,000 steps daily, and look to venture to developing my non existant exercise;
Drink 3 litres, track 800.
Going mostly vegetarian as on a new path.
Prep ahead on a Sunday planner. 9 weeks to do this. 9 weeks to go til xmas!

1Adeline · 24/10/2021 14:29

Hello and welcome @drinkwinewithme. Sounds like you have a good plan and you should be able to lose that comfortably in that time! Hope it is going well so far.

I’m struggling to be strict as I’m not at work this week and next week - always tougher when at home. So I’ve decided to aim for being sensible, and get back to strict at the start of November when I’m back to work.

PhoenixMama · 25/10/2021 12:33

Hi all! Finally finished my last big celebration/dinner so should be able to get back on track now. No way I'll lose what I'll need to in time for when I wanted but I'm going to be good from now till end of Nov and see where I get to. It's the planning that kills me but fingers crossed I'll be able to do it!!

Also aiming for 10000 steps a day which is suddenly so hard because I'm working at my desk so much but really want to crack this!

WildePozy · 26/10/2021 10:39

Morning everyone.
So the weekends are definitely a struggle. I managed to stay below 800 Friday and Saturday but Sunday we had a roast and that tipped the numbers by a lot!

Saying that, I’m still down another 3lbs so a slow but steady loss.

Week 1: -3lbs
Week 2: -3lbs

Aiming for another 3lbs off this week, think it’s achievable. My trousers are already loose and my friend commented on how slim my face looked, so it’s clearly not just been water weight! Hope everyone has a positive week.

chatw0o0 · 28/10/2021 00:25

Hi all, hope you don't mind me joining in! I have recently watched Australia's Health Revolution with Dr M, which was very inspiring... I've signed up to the Fast800 website and just getting my head around what's needed before I start.

12 weeks on 800-ish calories a day seems a long time! Has anyone else done this for the entire duration?

Also, for my target, I chose a weight that would get me into next BMI bracket below where I am today (around 12kg less) - is this realistic? I couldn't see much guidance on the website around what a 'healthy weight' target should be - given I am quite a long way off that at the moment and definitely not achievable in 12 weeks Grin.

Any guidance or wise words would be appreciated. I should really be asking this in the community part of the Fast800 website, but come to Mumsnet out of habit!

northwooddown · 29/10/2021 13:48

Hello everyone. It's been a very long time since I've been on here. I gained nearly 2 stone over lockdown and I've been piddling around trying to get it off for 6 months and it's not working. So I'm returning to the fast 800 and on the thread for accountability!
I did the 800 a long long time ago with great success and was a glorious 9.7 stone (bumping up down a couple pounds) for a few years but the second lockdown ruined it all so I'm here starting again.
I weigh 11.2, I should be 9.7. I'm 5ft5, 48 (menopausal), work full time, have two kids and two dogs. I'm vegetarian.
Right now I don't feel or look myself at all. I feel like shit frankly. I'm plump, wobbly, really unfit, double chinned, grey skinned and black under the eyes. And I wear elasticated waist trousers. I hardly recognise myself! I used to be really fit - running, hiit, Pilates. I have a beautiful wardrobe of clothes that I can no longer fit into which are just getting eaten by moths. Enough is enough. I want to feel lovely again - fit, well dressed, well groomed. I'm sorry if that sounds vain. I don't mean it to but feeling good is often looking too.
I have a few meals out and a birthday coming up but I won't let that get in the way and ruin this plan. Of course I'll enjoy myself on those planned days but other than celebrating I'm going to be on it.
I'm going to do this - with your help!
Newbies - my top tips - keep reading the thread, keep posting on the thread - this works because of all the support of others. Have half a pint on water if you're hungry then leave the kitchen. Don't snack, ever. Again, just leave the kitchen. Never eat bread, it's addictive!
Haha!
Wish me luck. I'm pleased to be back!x

Lonzo · 29/10/2021 14:35

Hi everyone
I’ve just started the 5:2 version of Fast800. I’m doing ok on day 5, although have gone over my 800 limit by a little bit on both fast days so far Hmm I’m finding it hard to get from 1pm/2pm lunchtime to 8pm dinner time without a snack. Any advice on how to wean yourself off snacks without feeling hungry/ lightheaded/ sick would be great. Good luck to everyone just starting out or returning to this.

Lonzo · 29/10/2021 14:38

Just to say for accountability, my starting weight was 10st 7lb, need to lose a stone (Ie 9st 7) to get to healthy BMI and previous ‘good’ weight. Have lost 3lb this week but that’s water weight I think. Hoping the ‘real’ weight loss starts now...

WildePozy · 31/10/2021 08:49

Hi @Lonzo and welcome. I’m pretty new to this myself, and doing the fast 800. I found the first few days really hard, had serious headaches and nausea, but managed to push through by upping my water intake.
Now I don’t really have hunger pangs like I did, just the odd craving for chocolate! I think if you can push through a few days you may find the same, although I’m not sure if it would be as affective on 5:2.

WildePozy · 31/10/2021 08:59

@northwooddown
Thank you for the tip, and welcome back! 9st 7 is incredible, and I’m sure you will get back there.

I feel similarly to you, in that I used to be seriously fit; HIIT training 3-5 times a week at one point, even hitting the gym on our honeymoon whilst doing strenuous hikes everyday. And now I feel like a totally different person who I don’t recognise.

I’ve found this third week challenging. AF came early, and so did the lack of motivation. I’m still sticking to it though so hoping I can get a number loss when I weigh tomorrow.

Lonzo · 31/10/2021 18:58

Thanks @WildePozy I do think it’s getting better bit by bit. Although it’s only 5:2 rather than Fast 800 I’m still having to get used to fewer or no snacks - definitely a challenge!

Drinkwinewithme · 02/11/2021 11:36

Thank you @1Adeline. I came down with a super cold just after my first post..Glad to report I'm now 12,7 so lost 2lb but feeling better, onwards and upwards (down ultimately! ) Hope you're back on track too .
