Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

788cal and 18g carbs.

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 15/05/2020 20:23

@Kimlek you may be right. Today was going well until peanuts and chocolate happened!

LarryUnderwood · 15/05/2020 20:38

Happy Friday everyone! Today has been a bit of a bust, family got takeaway and I ended up scarfing some chips and spicy chicken wings. And I am planning to have a large glass of wine once they're in bed. So will be finishing up at around 1550 cals and 85g carbs. I was feeling a bit glum about it and then had a look at my MFP details for the week. Average 1098 cals and 45g carbs per day. This time 3 weeks ago I would have thought that was a starvation diet from hell! So actually I have turned my eating around (my fat, nutrient and protein totals are all much improved) and have nothing to be glum about. So what if it takes me a little longer than 8 weeks to reach a goal? Yay me! Yaya all of us!

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 15/05/2020 20:55

That is a good attitude @LarryUnderwood, I'm going to copy it!

agteacht · 15/05/2020 21:16

Love it @LarryUnderwood

Kimlek · 16/05/2020 07:34

Absolutely @LarryUnderwood we have to remember to keep things in perspective. I think I need some new scales. Someone said they had fancy ones and recommendations please?

Lndnmummy · 16/05/2020 08:50

Joining for 100th time. I have finally hit rock bottom I think. So angry with myself for failing to get back in track. I do ok in the day, then about 5.30 when I log off for the day and go downstairs to cuddle my boys and make them dinner I just lose the plot. And I eat, and I eat. And I eat.
It has to stop!!

Lndnmummy · 16/05/2020 08:51

A question for me as I have forgotten, what do you do with your mfp settings? The carb ratio etc?

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 16/05/2020 10:43

Advice?

Thursday, I think, as the days seem too run into each other, was a fast day. Had just water tarted up with lemon/rosemary mint. Dull headache, but generally felt OK.

Friday. Had some soup mid day and was so incredibly hungry. And small piece of chicken with small amount of spinach in the evening. Went to bed really early as felt terrible.

Today feel fine, made banana bread for DCs and trying not to eat

Why do I feel so awful when I eat a small amount?

On the plus side, have lost 4lbs so far. Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/05/2020 10:46

@LarryUnderwood great attitude. I think if any of us emerge from lockdown having made any positive changes at all we should be celebrating. Yay all of us !!

@Lndnmummy hi! Welcome back! I don't use mfp so no advice on macro settings on there. Good to see you back though. What's your plan for the week ahead?

Few glasses of wine for me last night but I am actually doing ok with the sugar cravings (especially considering dd baked yesterday and there's cake) but I am really focussing on my end goal. I know if I eat one cake I'll eat several so I'm just not even going there. I'm still listening to my hypno audio every couple of days, and yesterday realised that I haven't binged on sugar for a week or so, not intentionally, but it's just sort of happened.

I planned to run today but might not now, depends how warm it is. I've just done a PT session online for 30 mins which was good. Food today: chorizo and egg for lunch, dinner - dh wants a takeaway so if he gets pizza I will just have something different; if he gets Indian I will have a starter and salad.

Feeling positive!

Hello! Can I join?

I'm on day 3 of following the BSD book, though I'm using up my stash of meal replacement shakes for 2 meals then having a 400-500 calorie main meal so having around 900 calories a day. Once I've got through my shake-stash then I'll follow the book with real food!

I have a quick question about what are people using to calculate and log your carbs?

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 16/05/2020 10:59

Lndnmummy - I use MFP, but don’t pay any attention to the macros... I just keep a close eye on the total nutritional value for my carb total, and for fibre.
Ilovemydog - did you eat anything else sorry? Or was that it? Are you logging food/calories/carbs anywhere?

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 16/05/2020 11:31

whattheladybirds - No, didn't eat anything else on Thursday, and you make a good point about keeping track of calories. Will need to figure out the value of everything!

The weird thing is that I feel better when I just have water rather than a small amount of food. Obviously going forward will need to manage on a balanced diet...

waterproofed · 16/05/2020 12:03

Good morning, I’m working this weekend so just checking in super quickly with a picture guide for setting up your macros on the free version of MFP. Starting from the home screen, click on the area circled in red.

waterproofed · 16/05/2020 12:09

Last screen is where you edit your kcals and macro proportions.

As expected, I’m on a plateau but feeling good and not hungry at all. Week 4 done, no loss. I am already at the lower end of BMI so I was never going to be losing lots of weight at this point, but the cravings are completely gone and I’m seeing a lot more muscle definition.

As for scales, I ordered the Kamtron scales off amazon for £30 and I’m pleased with them. They measure your muscle mass, body fat and other things and also plot your weight on a graph for you (on the app, which is free).

@tyrannid welcome! A lot use MFP but I prefer Fat Secret, it just seems to work better for me.

@waterproofed that runners workout looks interesting!

ilovemydog did you record what you ate on Friday? It doesn’t sound like you had very much at all in 2 days! Also, are you drinking enough?

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 16/05/2020 14:43

Whattheladybird Yes, I am definitely drinking enough. Water mostly, although did just have some fizzy water Smile

Just found an online calorie checker, and really over estimated 800 calories, so will need to get better at what this looks like.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 16/05/2020 17:58

I have had such a hungry day. Finished on cal 1121 and carbs 26g. Now I just have to convince myself the kitchen is well and truly closed!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/05/2020 18:07

@waterproofed I'm tempted by some body fat scales but always talk myself out of it. I will have a look at those ones!

NathanNathan · 16/05/2020 18:45

Accidentally did a 24 hour fast. Believe me, not words I ever would have ever considered uttering a month ago. Bit worried about what will happen now, will I just collapse if I don't eat food now?! Grin

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 16/05/2020 18:50

When I did mine @NathanNathan I wasn't even that hungry at tea time!

Just ordered takeaway, Vietnamese so I've managed to be reasonably healthy. It'll definitely be over calories but it's been a hard week!

waterproofed · 16/05/2020 19:42

@NathanNathan well, that’s a win if I ever saw one! I had a late lunch (2-3pm) which came to about 550kcal (roast chicken, some greens, yoghurt with nuts for dessert) and I’m not hungry enough to eat dinner. Clearly we’ve broken something on this diet.

@thenewaveragebear1983 DH (who is a medic but not a nutritionist) thought my body fat scales were ridiculous and unnecessary because it’s apparently so easy to estimate your body fat percentage. I ignore his advice as a matter of course, but just wanted to flag that they may be a frivolous purchase. I did not buy them to fine tune my journey to being a fitness guru (I wish!), but I enjoy making friends with my new scales - I want to be sure I can keep this weight off and I think I have to weigh myself frequently to achieve that long term (as per Dr Mosley’s advice). As someone who does not struggle with healthy weight maintenance as a rule, I was really shocked to see how quickly I put on a stone by avoiding my old scales. I don’t want to do that again so the new ones live in the bathroom, where it’s easy to form a new habit of stepping on them in the morning before my shower. To me frequent weighing also removes the emotional charge that comes with stepping on the scales infrequently always in fear of the number that appears out of nowhere. Now I do it every day and get used to the daily ebb and flow of my body doing its thing, confident things are heading in the right direction.
