Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Finished on 900cal (ish- couldn't quite be bothered to calculate every tiny bit of tom puree, grated courgette & garlic in my tomato sauce) and 32g carbs. Huffed my way through a 4m run and yet another bastarding Joe Wicks session, so very pleased with myself at not hitting the cheese mid-afternoon.

V interested in the chat about body shape versus weight. It's amazing how different the same weight looks on different people. I remember reading some article about how female rugby players are usually 'officially' obese based on BMI, but of course are actually astonishingly fit, strong women.

DH on day 2 of his diet and professes himself a 'bit hungry' but generally okay.. Has offered to do all the meals at the weekend, which normally I would jump at but having seen the size of piece of cheese he considers 'very small' suspect that a bit of assistance on portion control may be required!

LarryUnderwood · 12/05/2020 21:31

I spoke too soon, had my dinner too early and ended up very hungry. Had 50g greek yoghurt to tide me over and now having a small gin and tonic. So finishing the day on 978 cals and 30g carbs.

waterproofed · 12/05/2020 22:02

Yes, celeriac takes ages to cook. Mine was frozen (I keep it in the freezer in chunks to flavour broths and soups) so I defrosted it in the microwave and then fried it in ghee. I like it al dente and the the taste does not bother me though I agree it is less strong the longer you cook it.

Closing the kitchen at 789kcal and 50g of carbs (celeriac, I am looking at you). Also went for a 7K walk with DM, but I really need some yoga in my life. Plan is to get up early enough tomorrow to do it before DD wakes up.

waterproofed · 12/05/2020 22:46

Back just to say I actually closed the kitchen at 805kcal and 32g of carbs - I got confused when dealing with the numbers, it happens a lot Blush

whensmynexthol1day · 13/05/2020 08:03

Thanks everyone on the celariac tips. Will try the hash when I next go shopping - may try it with black pudding- I love the stuff! But will see how calorific it is...

Had a good week so far -lost 0.7kg since Monday so after a couple of mediocre weeks (maybe period related? I have such random periods it drives me crackers!) I'm pleased. Just need to not be complacent and relax at the weekend!

My app now tells me I am 52% of my way to goal which is encouraging and I'm only 3lb away from a healthy BMI- I haven't weighed this little for years. Annoyingly though although I can see a big difference in the way my body looks and my face is actually looking pretty tight in real life any kind of video call seems to show me with a huge double chin!

VenusInfers · 13/05/2020 10:14

Morning all!

Congrats @whensmynexthol1day! That's a fantastic milestone to have already reached & with another important step only 3lbs away.

Re video calls the key is to elevate the camera a little (at least to your eye level) and make sure your main light source is behind it. Smooths everything beautifully! I've never looked so lovely as on my book group Zoom chats. The lighting in our regular pub is nowhere near as kind as what I can bodge together in a few minutes half an hour at home. Grin

agteacht · 13/05/2020 10:31

Morning all and loving the celeriac tips, need to try that recipe.

Week 7 weigh in for me this morning, 1.8lbs lost. A total of 18lb lost in 7 weeks, down from 161.2lbs.

Starting week 8 at 143.2lbs. The elusive 10 stone mark almost within my grasp... probably two weeks away.

LarryUnderwood · 13/05/2020 15:54

@agteacht wow that's fantastic, well done! Looks like we started at similar points although I'm several weeks behind you. If I manage similar results I'll be delighted. What's your goal?

agteacht · 13/05/2020 17:29

Thanks @LarryUnderwood ☺️
Yea looks like a similar starting point.
Good question.... I'm not 100% sure of my goal to be honest!
I am definitely going to stay on the plan as is until I hit 140. But from there I'm not so sure. I think ideally 135 as a safe spot under 10 stone. The lowest I remember being is 129 when I got married six years ago. But I stayed there for like a month and then went up again! So I think maintaining between 135 and 140 is more realistic.
What about you?

agteacht · 13/05/2020 17:34

Having just written that I can't believe I'm even at a point where I'm considering a goal weight. This plan truly is the best thing I've ever tried. I thought I would never shake off my pregnancy weight and now I'm half a stone below the weight I was when I got pregnant. I'm going to have to start getting evangelical about this to all my friends (if they ever see me again properly post lockdown ;)

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 13/05/2020 17:50

Just got the beef rendang out of the oven for tea tomorrow and it is amazing! Definitely recommend it, it's from the recipe book.

whensmynexthol1day · 13/05/2020 18:00

Good tips @venusinfers. I have a standing desk so am going to raise it a bit more for the next meeting. It's a bit more tricky with my laptop as I can't separate my keyboard from laptop, but raising it a bit more may help. There seems to be a whole science around doing video calls well- I know anyone involved in bidding for new work at my work is being taught where to position stuff in the background, how to do lighting etc. Definitely a new era!

Sounds like lots of people are having good days today! Keep it up!

After a really good weigh in this morning I've had a fairly crappy day at work and succumbed to an Oreo biscuit in the middle of the day. Going to close the kitchen now on 942 kcal and 32 carbs. Hopefully low- ish carbs will save me today!

whensmynexthol1day · 13/05/2020 18:07

@RedLipsAndRosyCheeks I agree it's yummy! For a diet cook book I think there's really good recipes. We've been through nearly all the main course ones and there's only been one we've not enjoyed.

NathanNathan · 13/05/2020 18:29

Had a weak moment and ate two cookies. Feel stupid as I was just getting back on track after my plateau.

Feel really quite sick now, putting this here to remind myself not to do it again.

VenusInfers · 13/05/2020 19:27

Ah, a day of minor slippages. I too went a bit off plan and had two V&T with dinner.

Heard today that I am now furloughed until the end of July, and whilst I know I'm lucky to have a job that is keeping me on whilst things are so messed up I'm rather down about how long it will be. I also know I'll be paying this all back via my taxes/reduced local services for years to come. I miss my work, my colleagues and I miss normality. Sigh.

Closing kitchen on 999 cal and aiming to do better tomorrow.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 13/05/2020 20:44

867cal and 22g of carbs. Struck me today... my size 16 jeans are getting loose.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/05/2020 21:33

A weird day today. I went for a run and then had a series of meetings via zoom which left me totally frazzled, did hardly any more steps, ate my lunch stood at the fridge door and hardly drank any water. Worked again this evening. However, all food was good and bsd friendly. No sugar. My dinner was divine. I have snacked on cooked chicken and a few other bits. It really throws my eating when my routine is out so I will really try to keep to it tomorrow.

Closing up on 1350 cals, 53g carbs , 12k steps (5.5k was a run)

Tomorrow: I'd like an 800 day so I'm going to fast as long as possible. Eggs for lunch, then dinner will be homemade pizzas (kids) and pizza topped turkey breast for me with salad. Must drink more water and get some steps in too!

@agteacht maintaining between 135 and 140 sounds realistic. I would love to reach my 'happy weight' of around 126lbs/9 stone - I was around this for most of my 20s and it suited me, I am fairly small boned so wasnt 'thin' looking but definitely slim. But I'm 41 and had 2 kids so it's probably just a pipe dream! 130-135 would be great, I was around 135 -138 after I had my kids and lost most of the baby weight. So to get back to that would be really good and I have clothes that would fit again!

Closing the kitchen today on 1181 cals and 68g carbs - I baked with the kids today and couldn't resist sampling a cookie. It was totally worth it and I only had 1, whereas usually I would be sneaking into the kitchen to steal them when no one was around. So that's progress!

However i took delivery of some snazzy new scales today. Stood on them (clothed, end of the day) and weighed about 3kg more than I did yesterday morning Sad. Am hoping it was just clothes/water/food baby, 1 cookie cant have caused that!

NathanNathan · 14/05/2020 12:28

Week 5 weigh in! I have good news for all fellow plateau-ers!

Week 1: 5.8 lbs
Week 2: 4.2 lbs
Week 3: 1 lb
Week 4: 0.4 lb
Week 5: 3.4 lbs

Grin

I've had a fairly good week, but have been up to 1000 a couple of times and had the cookie weakness yesterday so we'll see if it comes to bite me next week.

Thank you to everyone who encouraged me through the plateau and made me keep going!

whensmynexthol1day · 14/05/2020 13:22

Wow amazing work! That's a huge amount in 5 weeks

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 14/05/2020 14:18

Yay! Well done Nathan!

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 14/05/2020 14:21

Excellent results @NathanNathan

NathanNathan · 14/05/2020 14:30

Thank you very much, it's given me a new boost. 3 weeks to stick to it really well and then I'm going to do 4:3 for the other 4ish stone!

waterproofed · 14/05/2020 15:06

@NathanNathan I’m really delighted for you and it does give me hope that my loss will speed up again. Saturday is the end of week 4 for me (can’t quite believe I’ve stuck to it for as long as that) and my daily weigh ins tell me it’s a plateau again.

Made a creamy mushroom and shallots sauce to go with my courgetti and topped the whole thing with a poached egg this lunchtime. Yum!

VenusInfers · 14/05/2020 15:21

Well done NathanNathan! Getting through the plateau is super hard!

Oooh, waterproofed that sounds like a delicious lunch. We had pea and spinach soup and a hard boiled egg, which was yum. Looking forward to veggie sausages and corn on the cob for dinner tonight with a few strawberries and creme fresh for dessert.

Despite yesterday's slip-up it looks as though the scales are going to be kind and I should have a good wk1 total tomorrow.

And I have to take back everything I said about sodding Joe Wicks. This morning not only did I manage a full sit-up for the first time ever in years, I actually managed several!
