Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Could I please join?

Like so many people, am working from home and the highlight of the day is food and copious amounts of wine

Saw a reflection of myself hence, digging out the scales and am overweight at 10 stone 10. Shock

Was reading an article about fasting every other day, so am trying this and will eat sensibly. It was on the NHS web site, and appeared to be referenced in medical journals.

Would like to lose a stone.

Today is a fast day and so far so good.

Had water but jazzed it up with rosemary and lemon Smile

888cal and 24g carbs.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 14/05/2020 18:16

Hello Ilovemydog!

VenusInfers · 14/05/2020 19:40

Hi Ilovemydog!

That turkey breast thing looks yum, bear! Is it like a turkey escalope with toms, cheese and olives?

I was happily on 820 cal and 23g carbs when my husband deposited a G&T in front of me during an online Cub Scouts quiz evening. So that's another 100 empty, but oh-so delicious, cals on the total as my willpower is good, but not superhuman...
Real shame. Just want to blast through this and be out the other side and that won't happen without just a pinch more control. Still, managing to run most days, which must be helping.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/05/2020 20:13

Welcome @ilovemydogandMrObama

@VenusInfers yes it's a turkey breast steak, bash it under clingfilm then top it like a homemade pizza and bake, they cook very quickly. Mine has Tom paste, mozzarella and pepperoni on. Very nice..

Ate more than intended today but still all bsd friendly stuff. No sugar. Feeling quite controlled despite not managing 800 cals. I ran this morning and total 10k steps although would have liked more. It's been a busy day and quite stressful with work squeezing us a bit.

Tomorrow, no run but will do yoga and maybe some hiit if I have time. Food: again, try to fast longer during the day. Dinner will be a marinaded pork steak and veg.

Hello all, welcome @ilovemydogandMrObama.
Closing the kitchen on 1020 cals and 35g carbs. Have had a very active day though, park with kids twice and gardening, so 15000 steps!

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 14/05/2020 21:12

Hi @ilovemydogandMrObama
I had a bad day today, nothing specific, just one of those shitty what's the point lockdown days! So I consequently ate a whole bar of dark chocolate. Not great but back on the wagon tomorrow.

waterproofed · 14/05/2020 23:36

Hi @ilovemydogandMrObama, this thread has been such a wonderful source of support for me. Welcome!

@thenewaveragebear1983 Always there with lots of delicious ideas. I’ll be trying your turkey pizza as soon as I can get some turkey.

@VenusInfers very impressed That you are sticking with Joe Wicks. I find HIIT really rather hard. Sounds like you are having a very good week.

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext I think I understand how you feel, I definitely have a few low moments myself despite actively trying to stay positive. Pandemics really are not great fun, are they?!

Closed the kitchen at 700kcal and 51g carbs - I just was not all that hungry in the evening so had an apple and a cup of tea. Also went for a walk and did an hour of yoga. I have decided to shelve running for a little bit because my joints are not loving it.

Kimlek · 14/05/2020 23:58

@NathanNathan go you!!! That’s a colossal amount of weight in 5 weeks!! Huge huge well done.
Hello & welcome @ilovemydogandMrObama did you just have rosemary water all day?
Ah @RedLipsAndRosyCheeks I have lots of those days but just brush yourself down and start again tomorrow. I always eat tons of choc when I’m due on; could that be the reason?
I’ve eaten a lot today. All BSD friendly but big portions and a flipping lot of pistachios... there’s now a global shortage. Sorry.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 15/05/2020 07:38

@kimlet - Yes, just had water all day yesterday as a fast day, and today will do 800 calories. Have been looking at what 800 calories looks like, and not entirely clear, but am sure I will stumble on something.

The huge weakness for me is cooking for the kids and wine

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 15/05/2020 07:45

Weighed in this morning, end of week 4, loss of 1.3kg. I feel like I’m noticeably smaller/clothes looser. But my period is due also, so I suppose it may be another week or 2 before I see the benefit on the scales. Keep plodding on....

agteacht · 15/05/2020 08:08

Well done @Whattheladybirdsaidnext that's a very good loss for week 4

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 15/05/2020 08:10

Thank you... does that mean week 4 is an odd week generally? Was the way you phrased that... I know week 3 is a pig but wasn’t aware of anything specifically for week 4?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/05/2020 08:27

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext well done. Weight loss does just generally slow down a bit and usually week 3/4/5 can be a bit tricky.

I weighed in today at 10.6.8 although can't exactly remember what my weight was to start with this week. I remember a 10.12 last week, and a 10.10, so let's call it 10.11. I'm going to start writing these down I think! Anyway, so 4 (ish) off so far this week. Weekend looming ahead though, and I really aim to not drink so much this weekend. I'd like to not drink at all but I know by 7pm and with dh having a drink it will be very difficult not to, but I'm going to really try to cut down. Mostly because of the subsequent food intake, which then goes awol if I drink.

No run today, my legs ache, so will do my yoga. Maybe a walk with the dc if they want to. Food all planned.

Have a great day everyone!

VenusInfers · 15/05/2020 08:59

Well done whattheladybird and bear. Those are excellent losses!

@ilovemydogandMrObama 800 cals does not look like much, sadly, especially if you're feeling hungry! My 200 cal breakfast today is 9 cherry tomatoes, a 5cm chunk of cucumber and 50g feta cheese with a mug of tea. Keeping up your fat and protein generally means that a lump of meat/cheese/tofu and a dribble of oil will take up most of the calories in the day and then you add some veg for flavour/fibre/vitamins. Let us know if you'd like any ideas of sample menus - everyone on here has favourites!

My wk1 loss is a solid 5lb, which I am very pleased about. Know a lot of it is water, but it's all good and I am feeling more like myself already. 7lb to go...

ilovemydogandMrObama · 15/05/2020 09:13

@venus - oh yes please! For me, the hunger is tolerable, as long as I have something to look forward to, if that makes sense? Am planning to have a light evening meal with the family.

Am not great with dairy, although I love it.

It was DD2's 9th birthday yesterday and the left over cake is very tempting... and the wotsits

agteacht · 15/05/2020 09:13

Well done @thenewaveragebear1983 and great loss @VenusInfers

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext I found it a bit slower yea - better than week 3 but slower than week 2 or 5. So yours looks like a very good result to me

if helpful my losses have been:
W1 6.4, W2 3.4, W3 0.4, W4 1.6, W5 2.8, W6 1.6, W7 1.8 - all figures lbs not kgs unfortunately 😂

VenusInfers · 15/05/2020 10:12

@ilovemydogandMrObama

Breakfast (all about 200 cal with a mug of tea)

  • 2 hard boiled eggs, 1/2 little gem lettuce, tsp light mayo
  • 2 rashers bacon, 1 portobello mushroom fried in 5g butter
  • 2 poached eggs on two large sliced tomatoes
  • sliced apple and heaped tsp of peanut butter

Lunch
Big leafy salad, usually with cucumber, courgette, pepper, celery and either

  • 1 hardboiled egg, 25g smoked salmon, pickled beetroot
  • tuna and capers & shake of dressing
  • blue cheese and apple/pear
Or soup

Dinner. I save 350 - 400 cals for this so can usually have what the family have but with out the carbs and easy on the portions

  • two grilled high-meat sausages & veg
  • bolognaise and baked courgette
  • small grilled salmon portion with lemon-y veg.

Oh and @waterproofed HITT is an absolute pig. Only doing it cos my 10yr old is too. Very annoyed that it is actually working! Grin

ilovemydogandMrObama · 15/05/2020 10:28

@venus - brilliant, thank you for the ideas! May do a beetroot soup for lunch and chicken breast with veg for dinner. I love lemon!!

NathanNathan · 15/05/2020 10:36

Thanks Kimlek! Feels really nice when other people tell you you've done well Smile

Quite a bit non scale victory today, tried on a pie of jeans to see if they were close to fitting, they fit! I'm wearing them now! Really starting to feel lighter.

NathanNathan · 15/05/2020 10:37

Big not bit, pair not pie!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 15/05/2020 11:15

Nathan, that’s the best type of victory! Well done!
