Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Well done! And thanks for the water advice, I’ve been headachy.

LarryUnderwood · 25/05/2020 10:27

@Justasecondnow that's amazing, well done! And @NathanNathan, great progress. Everyone is doing so well. @lightlypoached 0.9kg is great - it's moving in the right direction for sure Grin.
I have had a very indulgent weekend, approx 1300 cals and 47g carbs on saturday and 2000 cals and 159g carbs yesterday Shock. Back on it today and it was thoroughly enjoyable. I am still down around 10lbs over the last 3-4ish weeks I've been doing this, and I see myself doing this for quite a while yet. I'm really enjoying having a few days per week of very low cals and then relaxing for a day or two. I'm finding that even when I have an off day my cals are much lower than they would have been before, because I'm getting used to not absolutely stuffing myself at every meal. Previous 'bimge' days would have been 3k cals or more, and I would have probably eaten secretly. Now I'm tracking everything even when I have gone off the rails, and I'm not hiding in the fridge! And some of my clothes are feeling more comfortable again. Feeling very positive today, happy Monday everyone Grin Grin

NathanNathan · 25/05/2020 14:48

Well done everyone on the good losses!

Agree on the water, I was convinced I drank loads. Started tracking it.... nope not at all!

Just had a delicious salad that is my lunch a lot of the time at the moment:

  • Lettuce, spinach leaves, plum tomatoes, cucumber as a base
  • Protein top: halloumi or tuna mayo or egg or chicken or ham or sliced beef

Then I make a dressing which is just a teaspoon of mayonnaise and juice from half a lime, put in a jam jar or dressing sized Tupperware and shaken, tossed through the salad. Is really nice and not many calories!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/05/2020 19:33

@NathanNathan that dressing sounds lovely, I really struggle for dressings.

I've had a really good day 1 today. 932 cals, 30g carbs. Did 25 mins hiit this morning then c25K with ds (which was a 3.5k run/walk). 12k steps in total. My mindset has been good, lots of water, lots of self control.

Tomorrow, run in the morning, then lunch will be salad probably with halloumi, and dinner will be bolognese stuffed peppers.

Postmanbear · 25/05/2020 21:00

So day 1= 817 calories and 15g of carbs. No real exercise but I’ve done some digging and walked to the park.
It’s been much easier than I thought it would be. I assume that’s because I’ve eaten much more protein than I would do normally. I would love to have a cup of tea and some chocolate right now but I’ve logged my fast as having started so I’ll resist!

Lostmyunicorn · 25/05/2020 22:53

830 today. Not much exercise but lots of lovely pottering about in the sunny garden. 5lbs loss over my first week which feels pretty good.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 26/05/2020 07:50

@Lostmyunicorn - that's great! 700 ish yesterday, which was hard work with the BBQ going. Am realising some of my pitfalls, such as constantly tasting food, grabbing a bit here and there which I am sure adds unseen calories.

Now that it is, 'half term,' will try to go out with the DCs after dinner for a walk, kick about. Usually I don't have much energy in the evening, but will make an effort.

How was everyone else's Bank Holiday?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/05/2020 08:16

@ilovemydogandMrObama we had a lovely bank holiday but did end up drinking wine last night (again) after closing the kitchen! Feel a bit delicate this morning.

Anyway- onwards! Today I'm going for a run shortly before it gets too warm. We are going out for a picnic and walk today. It's the first time we've done anything really in 10 weeks. The dc have barely left the house and haven't been in the car since March! I'm weirdly excited about the prospect.

Lunch will be salad and dinner will be bolognese stuffed peppers

Was chuffed to pieces to discover I've lost a pound and a quarter since Saturday! Hurrah, the right direction!

bluepixie · 26/05/2020 20:00

Hello everyone!

Sorry I dropped off. I’ve basically lost the plot! I need someone to get me back on please :)

I keep starting and then by evening I’m too bored or too hungry and eat everything in house. I’ve managed to loose about 12 pounds very slowly (averages about a pound a week) bmi now 24.5 but I’ve now put on a few pounds and bmi back to 25. Ugh. I’m 5.6 so it doesn’t look terrible but I can feel it.

I’m increasingly annoyed at myself as I’ve been in this situation for years trying to get to bmi 23 and failing . I feel all Podgy and horrible:(

Any tips please :) I think the fact I’ve not weighed myself for 2 weeks hasn’t helped and I intend to jump on tmrw. But I just keep falling off plan at weekend which is fine if it was only a day But it ends up being 4/5!

Do I take a break fully? Do I start again tmrw? Do u up my cals to 950 which I find more doable so I’m not starving? I’m drinking 3l having lots of fats and proteins....

Well done to everyone else will catch up now xxx

NathanNathan · 26/05/2020 20:11

Hi @Cream123!

Perhaps if you're finding it hard to stick to the whole 800 it's worth finding a level you are happy with and can stick to and doing that for a while? Sounds like that month be 950? That's still a big calorie deficit each day?

Not an expert, just a suggestion. Smile

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 26/05/2020 20:25

Agree with Nathan - don't beat yourself up about yesterday - just look forward. Give yourself a break - we are still in the middle of a pandemic, so comfort eating is totally understandable.

Do what works for you, but don't feel guilty about anything. Smile

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 26/05/2020 20:34

@Cream123 950 cals is a good idea if it's sustainable for you. Or what about 5:2 instead?

bluepixie · 26/05/2020 20:40

Thanks for all ur good and helpful ideas :)

I want to do 5:2 but I end up doing 5:4 as takes me a few days to get back. On which I know doesn’t add up hahaha! When I first started this plan I did 5/2 sort of and it worked and weight came off. But now it’s been a while / I’ve lost weight I struggle to get back on.

First step is hopefully writing on here to get my back on track and not hiding in chocolate and wine!

Will weigh tmrw am I hope that scares me back into 950 hopefully .....

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/05/2020 21:08

@Cream123 I sympathise because I'm there too the last few weeks. I have all good intentions but every day I was ending up eating sugar. This week I've just been very strict with my planning, and unfortunately you do have to bite the bullet and get through those few horrible days of detox. I'm doing ok this week but it's the first time in ages. It's so much about mindset on this plan and my head has just not been in the right zone recently..

Today, kitchen closing on 1200 cals and 39g carbs. 16k steps including a 6km run. Tomorrow, I'm running in the morning again and, food will be salad lunch and dinner will be chicken wrapped in Parma ham and asparagus.

bluepixie · 26/05/2020 21:26

Yes @thenewaveragebear1983 I really admire how u keep coming on here on ur good and bad days and u accept the highs and lows and keep maintaining ur weight. It’s great. Good to hear ur back on

Loosing weight is 100 percent frame of mind. I just have lost it.....need it back. And yes the first 4 days r though....,I’ll log in tmrw and hopefully be back on plan hoping scales will terrify me!!! I have planned a 900 day tmrw Of

Avacado Blueberry smoothie

Harrisa roasted veg and chicken
Egg shasuka

Honestly if I just stuck to it a month I would get to goal! Why can’t I do it!!!!! I

Lostmyunicorn · 26/05/2020 23:18

I’ve closed the kitchen at 700 today. Lots of water but no proper exercise. Really need to get out early for a run tomorrow before DH goes to work as no chance after that.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/05/2020 07:20

@Cream123 I'm not sure that my constantly restarting and not following the plan is particularly admirable....but thanks. I do always acknowledge my failings though I guess; I know if I hide from it it gets worse

@Lostmyunicorn did you get out for your run?

Feeling positive today, and resisted the urge to weigh myself as I wanted to give it a few days. I'm due on though, annoyingly, in about 3/4 days which means I may have some water retention skewing the results of this week anyway.

OP posts:
bluepixie · 27/05/2020 08:03

WasMy good news on scales today .

Best get my head in gear.

:(

agteacht · 27/05/2020 08:03

Hey @Cream123 you're back! Totally think you should up your cals as long as you can keep the carbs low. Add in extra cheese, eggs, cream to get you through the first week or two. The scales will start moving downwards again even with the extra cals and that will motivate you. You can do it!

Lostmyunicorn · 27/05/2020 09:21

I did run but I must have been slow today because I ran .5k less than usual in my usual time. Still at least I managed to get out there!

IseeSwansea · 27/05/2020 12:58

Hi, I hope you don't mind if I join you?
I've been lurking and following you all for ages, probably since the beginning of lockdown! However, my ostrich like tendencies have got the better of me and I need to address it, immediately.
I say immediately, but I couldn't actually bring myself to weigh this morning. I have just downloaded the Happy Scale app and will do it in the morning. It's bloody hard to view as data and nothing more personal, but will endeavour to get over myself!
I love your honestly here, and more than anything, I need somewhere I can be accountable.
Today is planned, coming in at around 850 calories. I just need to be focused and firm closing that window this evening.
I've got about 14-21 lbs to shift. 14 ideally, 21 would be just amazing!

bluepixie · 27/05/2020 17:01

Welcome isee Lots of good advice here!

Managed today at 900 and 48 carbs . Both fine not great but I can’t seem to do much less. Quite satisifed but also not really full. Will down some water!!!!

NathanNathan · 27/05/2020 17:22

Well done @Cream123! Back on it.
